Sandopolis Act 2
"We're a weird bunch, us planeswalkers. Some of us forget where we come from, some of us forget why we left in the first place, others forget the way back home. But me? I don't have a home to go back to. Not after they arrived..." ~Taylor Richard Hiss

The farthest reaches of the multiverse hold great power, that much everyone capable of traversing the dimensions knows. The few that have made it that far and made it back, however, know that such power is already vested in entities beyond mortal understanding, that usually don't care for our transient lives. One such has depopulated several planes in the more familiar parts of the multiverse, and indirectly influenced a cadre of planeswalkers to destroy several more to try and stop its rampage.

Taylor Hiss knew how the cadre worked. He knew their motive, though he didn't forgive them for leaving his world of birth a desolate wasteland. And he'd just got word that they were heading for another plane near where he had chosen to settle for the past few years as a paranormal investigator. "If I'm gonna stop these idiots," he said to himself, walking the streets of a small town called Hawkeye, "I'm not gonna be able to stop 'em by my lonesome."

(OOC: Here's how things are gonna work: anyone helping Taylor should show in Hawkeye, anyone in league with the other planeswalkers should hold tight until I introduce them. Go.)

(I'll be using my characters Legret, Theo, and Runoe (he'll show up later))

"So this is Hawkeye?" asked Theo, the chameleon-cat looking around. His appearance was much stranger than that of the woman standing next to him. Dark green scales were hidden underneath thin orange fur, and a mane surrounded his head. Theo's eyes were pink and frequently changed to purple, and then to pink again. He wore a dark green coat and brown leggings with long boots.

The woman next to him, Legret, was much more normal looking. She had dark brown fur with white fur on her torso and muzzle, and her hair was varying shade of red and dark red, and her eyes were also red. She wore a black sleeveless shirt with a sand-brown coat and shorts. She wore long brown boots like Theo.

"Looks like it. This is where we traced the readings to." she said. Theo, whose full name was Theodore Mandrake De Ralas, nodded. "Small town." he commented as he looked around. "Well not everyone lives in Vinatoa, Theo." Legret told him. He laughed and shrugged.

"Eh-heh. Couldn't help but overhear..." Taylor said from behind the couple, a relatively rare human, sporting a black t-shirt, navy jeans and matching denim coat, and black tennis shoes. "If you're looking for something..." he hesitated, with a nearly-imperceptible twitch, "...weird, I could probably point you in the right direction. People think I know more about that sort of thing than anyone else living within fifty miles. Personally, I think it's a hundred."

In another plane, one known by the locals as "Pamer," two of the destructive-refugee planeswalkers conversed outside a tavern in a medival/Gothic-style city, all stone towers and bronze spires. Their leader, Neil, a raven-haired fellow sporting a snappy business suit leafed through a small black book, saying, "I think we've found something here. Something... good."
"Seriously?" Thus asked a gray-haired, twitchy-looking guy, in just a t-shirt, khaki slacks, and a black knit cap, glancing towards the tavern door nervously.
"Indeed, Nick. This world's mythology tells of a great beast that supposedly vomited this world into existence... as a cocoon," Neil said, nodding, closing his book, and walking a few feet away from the tavern door, as a local was thrown through the window. The air inside smelled of ozone, and the only people inside left standing were the bartender and the third planeswalker, a man in a leather vest with torn sleeves, cutoff jeans, and sporting a wild shock of shoulder length blond hair.
"Oh, dear," Neil said, feigning concern. "Somebody provoked Austin again. They should really learn more about us."

Amongst the plethora of unconcious, beaten bar dwellers, one sat up from the cold, hard floor. The human rubbed the back of his head, grimacing pain as he did so. He had chin-length, raven black hair and his fringe hid most of his face. His attire consisted of skin-tight ad dark clothes that allowed full mobility. Putting his gloved hand over his ear, he checked was his communicator still intact. It was.

"Thank the heavens boss added protection to electric discharges to this, it'd be ruined otherwise." he thought, turning the piece of equipment on and adjusting it properly.

"...situation check...?" he heard a voice over the static say. "Yeah, the magical signature matches... we got our man. Send Limbs, though. I'm not fit to trail these guys at the moment." he coughed, not surprised there was blood spilling from his mouth to the floor. The man spared a look at Austin and bartender, making sure they hadn't heard him as he turned of the com.

Legret and Theo looked at Taylor. "And you are?" asked Legret. "Chill sis." told Kabuto, holding up a hand. She sighed and turned back to look at the readings on her small computer. "Weird huh?" Kabuto asked the human. "What if our perception of 'weird' is different from yours?"

"Calm down, Kabuto." spoke a voice with a slight hiss. A short man with a small but sharp beak, wearing a long black cloak that covered from his head to his feet, stepped into view. "I apologissse." he said. His feet could be seen as he approached. They seemed almost ape-like in that they had opposable thumbs, but only had three toes. "I am Runoe, thisss iss Kabuto and Legret. We've traced a ssstrange reading that we recognisssed and hoped to find sssome information in town." Runoe's entire body was covered, save for his beak. But if one was low enough, they could see large, teal-colored eyes.

Taylor's mouth quirked into a wry smile. "Part of it's because weirdness is part of what I am and do," he said to Kabuto. He looked over at Runoe. "Well, more likely than not, I've probably a clue about what it is you folks are looking for. Definitely if it's something like a dimensional wrinkle or anything you'd call 'arcane.'" The smile faded. "Because that sort of thing tends to be the underlying cause of what I do. If you want to talk to me about it, I could show you to my..." he put his fingers up in the air and curled them, making "air quotes" "...'office.'"

"As much as your raw power is admirable, Austin," Neil said in chastisement, "we wish you'd show a little more restraint. If we're to bind our new mark, we need you to conserve your strength." Austin shrugged, then vaulted through the broken window. "Yeah, shut up, bossman. That book says squat about where our giant bug thing's sleeping."
Nick asked, "What makes you think it an insect?"
"Bossman said cocoon. Suggests bug-itude. Though yeah, could be anything. Could be like that thing I heard of that drives you cuckoo just looking at it," Austin said, shrugging again.
"We shall see, when we find it. A probable course of action would be to ask about some of the places in this book of theirs. Certainly there may be some lead in the religious centers," Neil mused. "Nick, acquire for us a map, if you please."

Runoe smiled his avian smile. "Fine, let usss go to your 'office'." he said, laughing in a quiet, wheezy voice. Theo and Legret frowned. "Hey Ru, since when are you calling the shots?" demanded Legret. Kabuto nodded and said, "You forget that what we're looking for belongs to our people."

Runoe smiled once more. "Ah, but you've ssseemed to have forgotten that it wasss my people who created the object which you ssseek." he retorted, shutting the two up. "I apologissse." he said to Taylor. "We've been a bit . . . on edge sssince we arrived. I'm sssure that you underssstand." as he said this, Runoe's hidden eyes twinkled slightly.

Taylor led them to an old building that used to be an inn. A desk had been set up in the foyer surrounded by candles on stands. "I'm still trying to work things out with the utility companies here. The things they don't know..." His voice trailed off in a pensive manner, which lasted about a second before he waved his hand and the candles lit up. "Anyways. The name's Taylor, and I fancy myself a paranormal P.I. How can I help you folks out?" he asked, though he seemed a little distracted.

Kabuto leaned against a wall while Legret continued to work on her calculations. "We're looking for two things, what's near here is a magical egg." Kabuto said. "It's called the Primordial Shell. Supposedly it surpresses its holder's true intelligence in exchange for an animalistic instinct and enhanced strength and speed."

As Kabuto spoke, Runoe dropped his cloak, revealing his body. His feet were actually long, powerful arms. His real feet were much shorter and weaker, but had six fingers and two thumbs each. A second pair of arms rested against his chest, the three fingers and one thumb on each hand interlocked. Runoe's dark bluish-grey skin gave him an odd appearance in conjunction with his teal eyes. But strangest of all was his head itself. Similar to a parasaurolophus, he had a long, hollow cavity shaped like a horn jutting from his skull back.

Now assured Austin, nor the barman, had noticed him speaking on the communicator, the human stood up to full height, kicking one anthromorphic avian off of him as he did. Nonchalantly, he strode past Austin and his "posse", out of the bar. Once out, he stopped and looked around himself, eyes narrowed and vigilant, searching for something... or someone. But a short moment later, he found what he was looking for at the top of a low rooftop, hunched, hidden and nigh invisible. Another human, garbed in grey.

"Quick work and good timing, Limbs. I leave this to you." The human mouthed slowly and gave the other human a small grin. "Limbs" nodded at him and went back to staring at the entrance to the bar. He glanced back at the spot where his companion once stood and found him gone. Limbs sighed silently and returned to his mission.

Taylor nodded. "I may have come across the artifact you're after. I'll need a few more days to make sure, but know that I know what kind of magics I'm looking for... In my experience, it's easy to disguise the arcane equivalent of a land mine as a beneficial artifact... or turn such an artifact into something harmful," he said, mostly as an internal pondering, but... "Anyway, like I said, the best way to make sure what I've got is what you're looking for is to let it simmer a few days. I've got another case of some serious personal import on my plate as it is, maybe you could give me a hand with it while we await the test results?" Taylor asked hopefully.

Neil smirked. "You're getting careless, Austin," he remarked as the other human left the bar.
Nick shook his head. "He's just as out of place as the rest of us. No way he's alone..."
Neil whacked Nick on the back. "This changes nothing. We move, now." The trio started down the muddy track-trail that passed for a road in this crowded plane.
Austin had to get the last word in, though. "He's definitely got something, if he could get back up after what I did," he boasted.

Legret and Kabuto both shook their heads, and Runoe lowered his head briefly. "Deal." he said. "What?!" demanded Legret. "Runoe, we don't need this guy's help!" assured Kabuto. Runoe looked at them and said, "Yes we do. We don't know the terrain or wildlife around here, nor have we the supplies currently to venture off into the woods blindly."

They attempted to form an argument but couldn't, reluctantly acknowledging that the alien was right.

"Hate to break this bit to you good folks, but this case isn't something I'd exactly consider 'local' myself," Taylor said. "We'll kind of end up jumping into another dimension. If the thought doesn't freak you out, the trip probably will. I gotta find some people I know from way back before they screw things up big time over there, we'll probably be a few days over there." And as an afterthought, he finished with, "And no, these are not nice people that I knew."

The posse came upon what could only be described as a chapel. It wasn't 'business hours', considering the big wooden doors were locked. Neil motioned for Nick to stand back as Austin rolled up his shirt's sleeves, cracked his knuckles, and blasted the doors off their hinges with a spell-laden punch. "Nick. Austin. Check the wings. I'll see if the pulpit has anything of use," Neil said, in a tone that bordered on commanding.

Runoe, for once, laughed with the others. "Taylor, was it?" asked Kabuto. "Don't think low of us. We came here from a different demension, I don't think that your trip will cause us too much stress." Legret nodded in agreement. Runoe said, "Surely my appearence isn't similar to that of a creature in this demension?"

"Thing is, you used a tunnel from your side to mine. Those are pretty safe. But to where we're going from here, there's no tunnel. Falling through a medium that's nothing but chaos... it's like skydiving through a thunderstorm from the top of the clouds... naked and shaven bare," Taylor said. He stood up. "With that out of the way, let me get my usual supplies for this kind of trip, and we'll be ready to go as you'll ever be." He headed behind the hotel's old counter and disappeared for a few minutes, presumably into a basement from the wooden thump from back there. He came back up with a pair of respectably-sized burlap duffel bags slung from his shoulders and an orange translucent pill bottle in his hand. He shook a few round tablets out onto the desk, and said, "Swallow those. Can't take you through the Eternities otherwise."
