I have noticed that the rules say that bumping old topics is not allowed, and that a member (Shadonic) has been banned for repeatedly bumping old topics. IMO, if bumping old topics is banned, then the cutoff time for topics should be the amount of time a member is permitted to post a new reply after. It gets really annoying when you don't realise a topic is old, and you get warned and the topic is closed after posting in that topic. |

Its not really difficult to see weather a topic is old or not, all you have to do is look to see when the last post was made, in your case you posted in a topic that was last posted in the beginning of 2008, witch is nearly 2 years old by now. |

i believe bumping old topics isn't against the rules, as long as the poster says something productive or note worthy. i think shadonic was simply restating what was already said. |

The rule states that you're allowed to bump any topic you so choose as long as it's recent and/or relevant, and the post you've written is stimulating enough for discussion to warrant you doing so. However, most people who bump like that don't add anything worthy to the conversation hence the warns and locks. Frankly, this is a common sense issue so it pisses me off when I see it, because everyone can see if a topic is old just by looking at the post dates, and unpinned topics that are that old are several pages back, so it almost looks like one is searching for a topic to bump just to do so. We could easily enact a post cut-off date for the board, however, or simply a more stringent rule of no such bumping period. But if anything, the rule is fine as is, if verbose, and it would be much easier and pleasing if members could take the initiative themselves to make sure they don't bump something inappropriately. |

Yes, but I have seen incidents of people making perfectly sensible posts that have good discussion value, and then a mod comes along and locks the topic. |

When? Most times that a topic got bump was someone saying 'Lol that was funny' or 'I agree with that' or something along thoses lines, I have never seen a bumped topic that had anything even half discussion worthy. |

I object to your claims

Once or twice I've seen people bump old topics with a discussion-worthy, on topic response. |

I remember a topic once where someone posted something, and then the discussion got going again and people were actually debating, then a mod came along and said something along the lines of; "Who bumped this topic? Locked". The only reason I can think of for that is that the post that originally bumped the topic was irrelevant. The topic was called something like: Sonic Underground, it is weird.

When I ask for examples, I usually mean with greater specificity than an anecdote, like a link. Anyways, if the post that bumped the topic was actually irrelevant, that would still warrant a locking because it breaks the rules regardless of the current conversation or the duration passed between the bump and the lock; Time and ignorance do not eliminate a mistake. However, if the conversation going on at the time was up to par, then there's no reason why it couldn't have been carried along in a newly made topic which is a solution we've done many times before for a variety of reasons. |

Well, I just went though all 24 pages of the 'Sonic's Universe' sub section of the board and couldn't find the offending article, but to be honest if the only thing your basing this claim on is one age old topic out of countless others that gets bumped, then you haven't really got much of a case to prove your point. |

He wasn't banned for bumping topics, he was banned for spamming, flaming, and trolling. |

Well, we all have to remember that its mainly new people that bump old topics. And your all forgetting, not every new person that rolls on in here is use to NOT having to worry about being warned for bumping old topics. In short, it might of been okay for them to do so one another forum they went on and aren't use to having to check to see if a topic is old. Also,Daniel White is right. Many topics in the sonic channel, or the other 'talk about sonic' forums, have been bumped and restarted the topic discussion wise. I'm sure you could fine a few of them in one of those sections(everywhere else I can't really say I've seen this, save for rps but they always get locked unless the rp creator bumped it themselves.) So yes, I agree with both parties here. He was banned for spamming, and not bumping old topics. But still, he did get a warn for bumping an old topic, unless I've read the information wrong. |
