Developer: Sega Japan
Genre: Sports game
Release Date: October 16, 2009 (UK)
Number of Players: 1-4
Platforms: Wii

Opening ceremony
The second game in the 'Mario and Sonic' series, the two old rivals leave the sun soaked track and field events of there first outing and hits the snowy slopes and skating rinks in an official video game of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Snow motion
Like the first game, the controls of the characters are mostly done by waving the remote, however this seems to have been tone down a little from the first game as for the most part the gestures consist of an up, down, left and right motion, not a bad thing as it makes the game more accessible to a wider audience, witch as this is mainly a multiplayer game, was a wise choice to make.

What a character
All the characters from the first game are present and correct, with two additional characters added to both sides, Team Mario gets boosted by Donkey Kong and Bowser Jr, While Team Sonic gains Silver and Metal Sonic to the roster, while all are fine additions I'm sure some Sonic fans in particular would like to see the inclusion of a certain white bat. (although she does make and appearance.)

Party time!
The new mode added to the game is called 'Festival mode', witch allows the player to compete in the full 16 day Olympics, you can choose to go it alone (single player only of course) or as a team of 4. (1-4 players with computer taking over whoever doesn't play.)
What ever you decided the completion of both modes are required to unlock everything, as both modes have different events in them.

The Festival mode consist of 4 mains challenges, Training Events, Olympic Events, Dream Events and Rival Events. (as a side note Cream and Toad pop up in this mode to give you some 'helpful' and often repetitive advice.)

Training Events sees you on your own practicing a certain event, you are given a detailed instruction course before being set a certain objective to fulfill like skiing though some many gates or getting so many points.

Olympic events on the other hand see's you competing with the other characters in order to win gold, silver or bronze medals, the only problem with theses events is that you normally go after all the computer characters have gone so you know witch score to aim for in order to win the gold, and for me that took some of the fun out of these events.

Dream Events are where most of the fun is to be had, like Olympic events you are competing with the other characters in order to win medals, however this time the events take place in key locations throughout the Mario and Sonic universe, I'm not going to spoil the surprise for you but lets just say this will be a real treat for fans of the series however it does seem that Sonic's team gets the better levels in my opinion.

Lastly the Rival Events has you competing in an Olympic event one on one with a special (and unfortunately non-playable) character, again these boss fights are a nice addition and I'm sure will please many fans, however Mario once again gets the short straw as one of his boss's is used twice for some unknown reason.

Closing ceremony
All in all Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is a fun packed game with a casual nod to the fans of both series, (thou as I said, Sonic seems to get more of better stuff than Mario in my opinion) the simplified control system plus the addition of the more meatier Festival mode means that the developers has obviously taken on board the criticism people made about the first game and have came back with a much better effort.
It won't challenge any hardcore gamers, but get a few friends round and its a really good laugh, just like a good Wii game should be.

8/10

I object to your claims
I thought this was a good game myself. My only major complaint though, were the controls for Wii Balance Board versions of certain games. Maybe it was just me, but I found the controlling absymal.

Yes you can, and you can dress them up in different gear to affect the way they play, its not an option I use so I didn't included it in the review.

So I could make my Mii speed type, then after a while maker him power type?
I am making a Sonic series which will be released to Sonic Blast members ONLY till an amount of time. Sonic Blast members will get teasers of the episodes and will get to watch them about a week before the public. HOWEVER, I need music. I already know a site but I need to refer people to let me download the music. It has tons of music which is EXACTLY what I need. So just click this: http://downloads.khinsider.com/?u=151320
Does anyone know where to get fighting sound effects? Possibly from Sonic Battle? I have Sonic Adventure DX voice clips but I am dying to get my hands on those juicy Sonic Battle sound effects. PM me any good sites to get them from. Thanks a lot fellow Sonic fans-KunoshiTheCat

I like the Adventure mode for DS, it's almost like an RPG, especially compared to Chronicles.

Bowser/Gnasty shipper! <3
I liked it a lot. Although I must say that I'd rather have a certain purple chameleon in over that certain white ba--*shot* Still, they both got costumes, and that's enough to tide me over (although I always questioned why Cream never got one).

DS version is okay, too. I especially loved it when Bowser was talking to Rouge after she went traitor on them and he went "You little brat!" (Explanation: Vector, Bowser's rival in the M&S series [Eggman isn't Bowser's rival, oddly], used the exact same line to Amy in Sonic Heroes). The Wii version still edges it out due to costumes allowing for pretending to have more characters, as well as other subtle differences.
Sonic Manga fanatic.
