SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG![]() Developer: Sega Studio USA Genre: Platform, action-adventure, third-person shooter Release Date: November 15, 2005 Number of Players: 1-2 For Example Platforms: GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox PLOT: The game begins as Shadow the Hedgehog stands overlooking Westopolis, the first level of the game. A newspaper flying by reveals that the Black Comet, a comet that passes by once every 50 years, is about to make another return. As Shadow stands, he thinks of what little portion of his past he can remember. A name, a murder, and a cry of help echoing through the halls of a facility in space. As Shadow comes back to reality, a red and black cloud appears over the city. A large, one-eyed squid-like creature approaches him and presents a hologram of a dark creature wearing what seem to be ceremonial robes. The being tells Shadow to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds and bring them to him in exchange for the secrets of his past. Shadow agrees. CONCEPT: The game revolves around Shadow and his quest to discover his past and find the seven Chaos Emeralds. It is up to the player to decide how to go about doing this. Depending on your actions and objectives, the game's storyline and the levels' layout can change slightly or drastically. This adds up to an ever-changing style that can be both entertaining and annoying. GRAPHICS CINAMATIC: The cinamatic graphics for the game are absolutely stunning, detail stressed to the last blade of grass, rivaling the cinamatic graphics of the newer Sonic games while seeming slightly more realistic given the nature of the areas the scenes take place. IN-GAME: The game runs on the same kind of engine as the game Sonic Heroes, and as such the in-game graphics are quite similar. The character models are most commonly described as "shiny," which I personally agree on. The textures seem very flat, the buildings resembling large slabs of concrete with windows painted on the sides. From a professional point of view, the game's appearance leaves much to be desired. But from a personal point of view, I believe that the graphics are fine. Not horrible, but not great. SOUND: SOUND EFFECTS: The sound effects in the game are interesting and good enough, but many of the sounds, such as some guns, simply sound like electronic toys. MUSIC: As with most Sonic games, the soundtrack for Shadow the Hedgehog does not disappoint. The songs range from creepy and quiet of the forest stage to the more entertaining circus music of the Circus Park stage. The themes are all excellent, my two favorite being All Hail Shadow and Never Turn Back. VOICEACTING: The first game to use the 4kids voice actors, many people complained at the change of cast. Though the voices aren't quite as good as those of the original cast, they are still quite well done in my opinion. The only voice that I dislike is Tails', but all the others are just fine to me. GAMEPLAY: CONTROLS: Though many people complain that the controls are very slippery and horrible, I found no problems with the controls aside from occasionally misjudging the distance of an object and running past it before I can stop or turn. CAMERA: The worst part of the game in my opinion, the camera is very horrible, swinging all over the place and making it difficult to tell which direction you're supposed to be going. This may be due to the fact that it uses the same engine as Heroes, which also had a bad camera. However, ShTH's camera was better than Heroes'. GUNS: Love 'em or hate 'em, guns are in this game, and sometimes it is nessesary to use them. Though few had mixed feelings about them, most hating them, I found the guns to be an interesting part of the combat system. Shooting enemies with an 8-Shot RPG is much more satisfying than punching them in the face in my opinion. Though I felt the game could have done without them, I don't mind them. VEHICLES: Probably the one thing recieved worse than the guns, the vehicles were another new gameplay element added in ShTH. Many people find the vehicles to be useless and just annoying, but I disagree. Vehicles allow you to pass through heavily guarded areas without taking damage, while others allow you to reach areas high above you, across rivers of acid, or on the other side of a flying temple. I found the vehicles to be somewhat akward to control, but overall I enjoyed their presense. FINAL SCORING: GRAPHICS: C= 9/10 IG= 6/10 SOUND: 8/10 GAMEPLAY: 8.5/10 REPLAYABILITY: 10/10 ENTERTAINMENT: 8/10 OVERALL: 7.5/10 In my opinion this was a great game that needs to be tried to truely form an opinion of it. Though it may not be a perfect game, it certainly is worth a rental in my opinion. Edited by The Original Eevee, Mar 20 2010, 10:40 AM.

i agree. as a shadow fan, it is my official opinion that if they redid it for the wee or something, they would definetly have improvements to make. although the good and evil gauges are cool. |

From a written standpoint you did a nice job, but when it comes to opinions.. mine is the exact opposite.. if not more than. After playing through my brain was fried, the game seemed to be a spawn of the devil it was so awful for me. I know I'm spoiling the positive mood in the thread surrounding this game but someone would have sooner or later. I'm not gunna change anyone's opinion nor am I trying to, but don't ask me what I think was wrong because I'll answer with "what was right?" The storytelling was awful and presented in one of the worst manners I have seen in a game. The mechanics of the game were clunky.. it seemed like it was just thrown together to bring him back from the dead to capitalize on any possible profits SEGA could. It changed Shadow as a character and not only did it mess up his past, but it wrecked his future continuity as a character.. as evidenced by what the majority think of him (emo) not that I was ever a big fan but at least he was a good rival/villain in SA2.. now he's less than nothing. I melted this game in a trashcan bomb fire and I'm proud.. This game needs to be buried just like all of the copies of ET.. |

Hey, I get that you're just expressing your opinion, but is it really nessesary to explain how you think it ruined Shadow? If you're going to speak of games in such a way, might I suggest that you start posting your own reviews instead of voicing negative opinions on other people's reviews? Not to be rude, but an opinion that long may has well be in a seperate topic. I admit that you make some good points, but I also think that you're being a BIT too harsh. It's just a game. Also, if you didn't like it, why didn't you sell it instead of burning it? Not only would you have gotten a portion of your money back, but you also wouldn't have done something to damage the air. Not to sound like an ecology nut or anything, I'm just really tired and am thinking too deeply into things right now.
