Interesting and surprising.

Gears of War Launch: November 7, 2006
Gears of War 2 Launch: November 7, 2008
Gears of War 3 Launch: 2012? 2013?!

According to Epic Games' President Mike Capps, that's a very real
scenario. Speaking at the TGS 2009 earlier today, Capps stated the
following: 'If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the
next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please
tell me! That's about four or five years away, I think.

I am 110% in support of this, as Gears 2 felt slightly rushed in my
opinion. The original Gears of War was one of the most-played online
titles, and I feel that Epic wanted to hurry to get Gears of War 2 out
so that they didn't lose that momentum.</p>
<p>Also, lead game designer for the Gears of War franchise, Cliff
Bleszinzki, hinted that the next iteration of Gears could include RPG
(that's Role-Playing Game) elements. If this is true, it will only
widen the appeal of the franchise past the shooter genre into the area
already occupied by the Mass Effect series, the BioShock series,
Fallout 3, and the upcoming Borderlands which looks to equally balance
the FPS and RPG genres.

In the meantime, I would like for Epic to concentrate heavily on DLC
for Gears of War 2 that can fill in the gaps in the story for those
that do NOT want to read 'The Pendulum Wars', 'Aspho Fields' and
'Jacinto's Remnant'. A few more map packs couldn't hurt either.</p>

Christmas is back again

Yeah I read this in a Norwegian article.
Supposedly it's because the newest engine.

There's never an end to improve the visuals of a game. And now available consoles won't likely be enough. That's obvious why it won't be released to date, but instead, not until a few years ahead.

We'll see heh! If this will ever be released. Thinking about 2012, ha! XD Ironic saying.

At least they aren't whoring it out and waiting for the Unreal 4 engine to be done is a smart move, imo. The Unreal 3 engine just can't hold up against other engines, it's terribly outdated.

Just the idea of buying a new console after all this console hype just seems retarded.

Besides who is going to buy a new system any time soon with the economic crisis and what not. >>;

a valid point indeed, which is why the console's lifespans are being expanded from the original xbox's short 4 year span.

The Xbox had a short span, yes. I don't think the 360 will last much longer than the traditional 5 year span, but that is yet to be seen. I don't think we'll wait longer for the next Xbox and PS4 than we normally would. 360 probably has two more year(s) left before it's dropped and the 720(?) comes out. The PS3 will last 7 more years even after the PS4 comes out as it's not even three years old yet.

Consoles next gen will likely be cheaper than they were starting this gen as there won't be any new technology in the systems. PS3 was only expensive due to have a brand new technology in it(Blu Ray) with all of the bells and whistles.

I'm pretty sure the 360 will last just as long as the PS3 does (7 years is bullshit), if they've learnt anything from business they'll realise that releasing it at the same time will save them money mainly because they'll both fix the bugs and issues. The 360 and the PS3 are prime rib-roasts, why even bother releasing something which will only enhance the graphics and performance a little bit?

If it's about making the games better? Yay, higher prices fun. If it's about making the games big, like Fallout 3, but with the graphical master piece of games which don't re-use textures, yay, longer waiting times.

There is no benefit in releasing a new console in the next year or even next 3 years, by that time the programmers will have gotten used to the system they'll be making games for, and will be able to develop techniques before it's released, otherwise, we're going to have a new console with no new games.

And it's obvious Nintendo screwed up too because most Wii buyers find the concept of the Wii bland after a few months and then buy a 360 or a PS3. So I personally doubt Nintendo will release anymore consoles, which is a shame because if Nintendo is bought out by either Microsoft or Sony, the games will most likely be exclusives.

And you guys know how I feel about exclusives, they're full of shit.

You think so? Maybe you haven't looked at history. PS1 was sold at stores for 11 years until 2006, PS2 is still selling after 9 years and not doing poorly at all, PS3 will likely do the same. Microsoft is still new so that's why I said who knows what they will do, but they ditched the original Xbox pretty fast after they rushed out their new system. I don't think they'll be supporting the 360 after the next Xbox comes out, but like I said who knows.

Why would they release new consoles? The same reason they always have and you can't act like it'll be such a huge problem when PC games are getting better and better. Why is PC allowed to improve but you don't want consoles to do so? A new console in two to three years is just the same as it has always been so I see no problem, it's not like they're rushing out with new systems all of the sudden.

Back to the topic, no Gears 3 till Next-Gen is their decision and they obviously think it's a good one.

What is the difference between a duck?

I believe it and I don't mind waiting. The UE3 was a force when it first came on the scene, and it IS still impressive when it comes to visuals and is very flexible, but its already starting to be overshadowed by other independant engines, prompting quick upgrades that none of the current gen consoles could probably support.

I think Microsoft will keep support for the 360 as long as it continues to sell well (the Xbox lost support because at the end of it's road almost all sales in all divisions had stagnated) and as long as it moves software because its overall profits put it a solid second behind Nintendo, and it is still by far the superior online system so there is no need for MS to hit the panic button at this time. I could see both the 360 and PS3 being sold for 5-7 more years but both will be succeeded before those spans are up.

So.. here's to the future and UT4, and Gears 3 for the NeXtBox. ^^

Gears isn't owned by Microsoft though, so I could see Gears 3 being multiplatform. There has been reports of Microsoft's contract with epic only being for two games. Whatever, I don't care either way, I'm glad it won't be whored out like an Activision game. :D

Wasn't the UE3 engine released in the early 2000s like 2002? Gears 2 looks great, but the UE3 engine is smoke and mirrors to make things look good now days. For example, in Gears 2 the shadows were baked into the textures. On Mass Effect they used a flat texture to emulate stairs(but looked just as if they were 3D stairs) UE4 will be a huge leap.

History is not evidence for the future. It's also funny how right I am in my post, that you don't even respond to it.

But other than that it'll probably be released on the PC this year if all they need is graphical support.

The Gears of War rights are owned by Microsoft, so any game baring that title is locked into the Xbox library immediately, hence the Microsoft Game Studio involvement. Ditto on the Activision comment though.

Also no, the UE3 was released in late 05 (don't quote me, possibly a little earlier or later) and debuted with the original Gears of War on home consoles and personal computers. Prior iterations (UE2 and UE1) had been used up to that point. UE3 immediately became the industry standard, fueling Gears, Madden, UT3, Turok, and a number of other high profile games both full-retail and arcade downloadable. Sadly the quick advancement of independent engines and knowledge of hardware has forced Epic to begin work on UT4 early, but don't put UE3 down, at this point it is still a top tier industry engine, sitting anywhere from the top 5 to the top 3 overall.
