Though 3D Realms, the studio behind Duke Nukem, has closed down, this doesn't mean that its employees aren't doing active "research."

George Broussard, developer on the original Duke Nukem, and director on Duke Nukem 3D (before the studio went tits up) has been playing through Naughty Dog's Uncharted series. His impressions have been ecstatic, to say the least.

"Amazing single player experiences, nearly, if not, on par with Half-Life 1/2. I haven't felt this giddy over a game series since Half-Life," Broussard writes on the ShackNews Forums. "This is epic badassery right here. Believe the hype."

The game has been incredibly well received by critics, earning a 96/100 metascore after 73 reviews on Metacritic. Broussard's praise continues:

"Scope-wise it's not even fair. Uncharted 2 *does* so much it's just intimidating. It's going to ruin gaming for me. No way this game can ever be the baseline for games. It's like you go see movies and they are ok, then every 5 years something like Lord of the Rings comes out.

"It's rare that I like games this much. There's virtually no fail in them. Very polished and well done on every level. These are master works, up there with the tops games being made. You may as well be playing great Indiana Jones movies."

And more:

"Game of the year. Can't see anything else besting it, even the mighty Modern Warfare 2. We shall see. That's the battle, imo, for Game of the Year.

"I can't take any more. The game will set bars so high that every action game will be a disappointment to play. Much like Half-Life did."

Following a number of excited mid-game forum posts, including "UN-fudgeING-BELIEVABLE GAME!!!" and "Best. Game. Ever. Seriously. The 95+ reviews are warranted. No hype," Broussard sums up his thoughts after finishing the game:

"Finished it. Jesus Christ. This is one of, if not the, most amazing games I've ever played. It deserves every game of the year award. What they achieved is unbelievable. It's seriously hard to think about playing another game after this. It'd be like watching some random movie after just having seen Star Wars.

"It's certainly in the top running for "best action game ever" with Resident Evil 4/5, Metal Gear 4, Half Life 2, and you know...the best games basically ever made.

"This game is worth borrowing a PS3 from a friend if you can't afford, or don't want one.

"No gamer should miss playing this game, because games like this only come along every few years."

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves opened to a first place position in the UK Individual Formats Chart, despite being on sale for only one day.

Uncharted 2 Gets Free DLC This Week

A new multiplayer map will be added to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves later this week as part of a larger multiplayer mode update, developer Naughty Dog has revealed. The new arena, "The Fort," is based on the first game's "Fortress" chapter and will be playable within the competitive and co-op arena playlists. It's the first piece of downloadable content Naughty Dog has released for the PlayStation 3 exclusive. Shackvideo users can use the HD Stream. The new map will be accompanied by the addition of leaderboards and player cards, which list a variety of player statistics like kills, wins, money, and so forth. The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday also brings with it a double cash weekend, along with temporarily fattened renditions of heroes and villains in competitive multi.

We’ve also made a slew of other changes to improve player experience.

I spoke with our multiplayer lead designer, Justin, to give us the lowdown on what’s so great about a few of these updates. Justin quickly shot me back an e-mail with the following info:

Clan Tags is an addition we’ve been working for a while on. While it’s not full Clan support, we wanted to be sure that everybody can fly their Clan colors within UNCHARTED 2 multiplayer. Support for this is available to all players from the very beginning and can be edited within the player Profile menu – the same place where you choose your boosters.

We have significantly decreased load times . You will notice that the game loads into a map much faster after leaving the vote screen. This will help get players into games faster and keep people playing instead of waiting in the menu system.

We have also added Rematch functionality. At the end of a game, all players will be put back into matchmaking together, allowing you to play the same group of people over again. This decreases wait times, while still allowing people to leave after a match if they so desire. Again, this gets people into games faster and allows more time playing and less time in the menus – all of which is a very, very good thing!
