Flying Battery Act 2
|
"Excuse me, Mrs.Robin." The announcer called from the phone, she had a nasal voice and sounded like she was getting a cold. "Yes?" Mrs.Robin answered, a tall white dog with a pudgy face and green eyes. "May I please have Jane Devona to the front office, she's going home." "Oh, yes. Go ahead Jane." Mrs.Robin said and continued her lesson. Everyone looked at Jane for a moment and then turned back to the board. Jane quickly stuffed her backpack with the books she would need for homework. Walking down the halls, with her dark green hair in a ponytail, her curiosity began to grow. As she neared the office door, she practically ran in, almost tripping on the rug. Instead of a usually cheery Mrs.Harrison, the principle, there was a distressed lady staring at the door. At first, Jane didn't recognize her, but realized it actually was Mrs.Harrison. Jane, with her childish voice, asked Mrs.Harrison," What's wong?" "I'm so sorry Jane, but your mother.... is dead." Jane's heart sunk. How could fate be so cruel to a heart so young, she was, after all, only five. First her father 'takes a vacation', from which he never returns, and then her brother is kidnapped, now her mother has died? Who else in her family was there to take away from poor kindergartner Jane. Finally, Mrs.Harrison had cleaned herself up with a tissue and announced that Jane was going to live with her aunt. Usually, Jane was over joyed to visit her aunt, but in this certain predicament, she felt pitiful. The only thing she would have thought nessecary was to have her go home and see if her mother was there. It was unfathmable to think that they would have her go straight to her aunt's house. With much reluctance, Jane rode the plane with someone that worked at the school. The had tried to start conversation, but fell silent as they realized Jane wouldn't reply. Of course, it was only common sense that she would feel this way, it was her mother, after all. Jane arrived at the neighborhood and stared out the window at all the houses that looked like duplicates of each other. Her aunt's house stood plain out as it was a deep green with a slated roof. There, standing in the driveway, was a tall hedgehog with a bob hairstyle. Aunt Becky's eyes were wide with excitement, and a large smile was smeared across her face. Even with her false smile, it was plain to see that she had been crying; her eyes were puffy and her face looked wet. "Welcome home darling!" Aunt Becky exclaimed with a shaky voice. Jane ran past her and opened the door to the house. She had been here so often she knew exactly where to go. She walked up the stairs to the guest bedroom and slammed her suitcase to the other side of the room. There was a dresser and a bed with sheets already set up. She jumped onto the flower patterned bed and cried into the mismatched pillow. "Honey... I know you're hurting, but maybe it's not good for your health. What you need is some good vitamin D. Take your ball outside in the park, try to make new friends." Jane had no reply. At first she sat there stubbornly. After a while Aunt Becky sat down with her and tried to comfort her. "Darling, you're not the only one who is suffering. There are just some things that happen and you just have to.... move on. All you need is a friend to help you with your problems. Go to the park and find someone to play with. Who knows, maybe you're a more likable person than you think." And with that, Aunt Becky patted her shoulder and left the room. Jane sat there and reluctantly picked up her ball and started her journey for the park. When she did finally get there, she sat on the swing and sulked. She couldn't possibly feel anymore misery.... Across the playground from a particular. green hedgehog sobbing on the swing, a crimson red hedgehog, -around the age of 5 based on both his size and stature- was swinging from bar to bar on the monkey bar setup. Surprisingly from his age, he was doing it quite proficiently, seeming to effortlessly swing from one to the next. After his 5th time 'aww'ing any sort kids that might be standing around, he jumped down and started exploring. As he walked around the field for a few minutes, he noticed the aforementioned crying girl out of the corner of his eye. |

Flying Battery Act 2
|
Jane realized how ridiculous she looked, sobbing on the swings, so she began to play with the blue and green ball by herself. Just as she was feeling overly humiliated, an over-sized fox appeared and snatched the ball from her hands. At first, Jane's blues eyes could only stare in shock, but as her courage grew, she stood up and yelled," Hey, mister! Gimme back my ball!" But it had no effect on the fox, he simply strode away. Jane looked around the park hoping someone would notice, no one caught her eye. How could all these kids act like nothing, with a heart half empty, she felt all she could do was appear limp and helpless. Edited by Devona, Sep 16 2009, 01:58 PM.

Now focusing completely on the green hedgehog who had now ceased sobbing and was now heading towards the blacktop to play with the ball. By herself... Ryan found his simple mind saying. Ryan was heading towards her to offer to be a playmate when the hulking (from his point of view, anyway) fox grab the green and blue marbled toy and begin walking towards the parking lot with it. Before he could begin to question himself ridiculously and childishly, he marched himself in front of the offending 'big kid'. Holding his arms out to reach a whopping two-and-a-half span, he yelled as loud as his little lungs would allow. "'Ay you! Gib 'dat girl back 'er ball!" Ryan's speech were obvious slurred, but it was just a side-effect of his thus-far lip development. After it became clear that the fox was ignoring him, he made the same attempt again. The fox, completely unaffected by the boy's pleas, he kicked the boy sharp in the stomach. Ryan flew a few feet, and landed on his back. instead of staying down, he got back up immediately, and ran to catch the 'escaping' fox. After a few more insults and hits, Ryan had gotten angry. He leaped up, and with a forceful -and unexpected- kick to the fox's lower back. the fox fell, and the ball fell from his clutches. Ryan ran to it to pick it up before the teenager could reclaim it, and ran to the green girl. "I 'tink 'dis is yours". He said with a bright smile, ball in hand, arms extended out towards her. |

Jane smiled, her bright white teeth shinning threw. "Gee, thanks! I don't think I could've gotten my ball back without your help!" She said. Suddenly, her aunt's words rushed back into her mind. try to make some friends . "Umm... Wanna play? My name's Jane. I'm live with my aunt over in that house." She said, pointing to the deep green house. Even if she hadn't pointed, it was quite obvious which house was hers. Edited by Devona, Sep 20 2009, 06:14 PM.

"Uh...kay," was the only response the simple-minded hedgehog could think of and was said with a grin growing grin on the young Ryan's face. He walked with the younger Jane to her house, where they spent hours playing and creating what would evolve into one of the Mobius's strongest friendships. Ryan's eyes popped open. Shifting in his seat, Ryan felt a bead of sweat come down his forehead onto his cheek. He lacked a shirt if any kind, the only dressing item on his upper torso was his dog-tag like pendant on a silver chain around his neck. He heard the sound of footsteps getting louder, and took a deep gulp. This was his hell. While most people had the dentist, or visiting their in-laws, his as his monthly prosthetic exam. Even though Jane [i[knew[/i] why it was always in the condition it ended up in, she still must've gotten a "thrill" out of yelling for his arm's condition. It was always the same thing, just in a shiny new wrapping. As she stepped in the room, wrench in hand and hair tied up in a bandanna, Ryan's flinched and his ears perked down, preparing for thorough chewing-out they would soon be receiving. |

Flying Battery Act 2

Jane grabbed her thunderous working boots and tool belt as she stormed out of the house. Her boots were clapping loudly on the concrete floor. Jane knew that today she would have to look in on Ryan's arm, she had a drill now that they had been doing this for a couple months now. Of course, this was no usual examination, while most doctors had clean white uniforms with gloves and a stethoscope, Jane had more of a mechanic's attire with her worn out overalls and handkerchief-wrapped head. While most of the girls in her neighborhood would glare at Jane and call her a "fashion don't", she would simply smile at them and walk confidently ahead. Jane unlocked the door to Ryan’s house with the key they had let her borrow. Pulling her hair into a ponytail, she climbed the stairs to Ryan’s room. They had already established that Jane would wake up early for his examinations. It was only practical, they didn’t want the neighbors wondering what was going on. Jane peeked through the door and saw Ryan sitting in his chair with his shirt off. “You... ready?” She asked. Jane knew that Ryan hated this, she could see from the agony on his face that he was already thinking about it. She walked slowly into her room, and noticed that her boots must’ve sent chills down his body as she walked up the stairs. Jane sighed and asked,” You sure you want to do this today? We can do it tomorrow, but it only gets worse with time....” |

A sarcastic smirk arose on Ryan's face. One Jane -and anyone who really knew Ryan well- was familiar with. It was the one he got before saying a "comment" (which was all the time). Sarcastic, metaphoric, rhetoric, even faux-sadistic at times. He took his left palm, and made a screech noise across one of the flat surfaces on the metal shape replacing where a right arm may be. As his organic hand slid down his non-oragnic arm, he tilted his head up slightly and closed his eyes. He uttered -quite sarcastically-; "C'mon, y'know you can't ignore the sweet melody of those pistons and gears, grease monkey." They both knew that he was being sarcastic about his taunt. Flying Battery Act 2

Jane hid a sigh by laughing. She walked over to Ryan and asked, while pulling out a couple of her tools from her belt, "So now I'm grease monkey? I thought I kept my clothes pretty clean, and then there's the fact that I'm not a primate...". She knew she was taking things too literal, but she did it on purpose, she liked watching Ryan's reaction. "Alright, on related topics, has anything been funny? Any malfunctions?" Jane asked, hoping to hide the hopeful tone in her voice. Jane began to wander in her thoughts of machinery and the sound of rotating gears. This was music to her ears, the sound of metal being scratched was something that she could live without, but she knew Ryan did it to tease her. As the symphony of technology played a chorus, Jane entered reality again. She had gone so deep into thoughts, that she was shocked to find herself in Ryan's house. "Oh, right..." She mumbled to herself, embarrassed. |

Ryan stuck out a finger, slid it across an oil-stained section of Jane's clothing, He lifted his oil-stained finger and gently swiped it across her cheek. Opting to withhold himself from setting her of with a sarcastic comment, he smiled and leaning back into his chair, replying to her question. "Well, the usual. few gears grinding a little louder than usual, might be because of a few misplaced parts the last time I transformed it, buuuuut, the usual." |

Jane closed her eyes and took a deep breathe. She hadn't glanced at his arm since she walked in and was now preparing herself to see the damage he had done. Opening one eye, she looked at his metal arm. As usual, it was in terrible condition, but somehow she didn't feel as upset over it. It was kind of what she expected. "Ryan... Can I just know? What do you do to that thing that makes it so... deformed looking." She asked, sounding more curious than upset. While she waited for his answer, she grabbed his prosthetic and looked it over. Turning it in her hands, she found numerous dents and scratches. "Gosh..." She whispered to herself. Pulling out her screwdriver, she began to re-attach a few bolts and screws. |

Ryan gridded his teeth. As Jane's tinkering got more extensive and she opened up a few of the compartments on his metallic limb, he felt the usual spike of pain in his spinal cord which were also present during his initial prosthetic augmentations, or every time he had to have the whole limb re-attached or replaced. It was something he could never describe to her, or any other non-amputee. Even though it was only basic maintenance and the pain was far less excruciating, he still couldn't help but tightly clutch the armrest of his seat with his left hand; and he let out an contained grunt as he felt the spasm in the base of his neck. He himself couldn't actually pinpoint the location of where the pain was exactly; he was in too much pain at the time to focus on it. He felt the usual sweat beginning to on his forehead, and took a hushed deep breath. "Y'know, putting all of those crack-jobs running around the city in their place." Before he could get the chance to start listing off names, he felt another spike of pain trickle down his spine. Edited by A Spades Ω, Sep 26 2009, 09:31 AM.

Flying Battery Act 2

Ryan would eventually explain it with a short sentence. She had already begun to tinker around with several gears, even greasing and lubricating some of them. " Well, it sure is doing a heck of damage. You're lucky I'm feeling good today, otherwise I'd be biting your head off." She threatened. Putting two cords together started a spark that hurt her finger. She stuck the finger in her mouth and grimaced. Of all things to happen now, she had to burn herself. Taking out a bandage, she wrapped it around the tender flesh. She took a little breather and continued to toy around with the machinery. As she began to make progress, she could feel her handkerchief soaking up sweat, causing it to stick to her skin. Her mind began to wonder what she would make for her aunt when she got home. Aunt Becky never cooked, she thought that Jane should never lose the talent of cooking, like she had. Just as Jane was starting to get hungry, she realized she was done. It had been a longer process than she thought, looking at her watch to see that it was already eight. "Umm... I think that's as best as I can get it, I've re-lubricated those gears, so they should run better. Other than that..." SHe twisted her mouth in thought," It should just about be as good as new. I guess I'll see you later, I've gotta run and make breakfast for Aunt Becky. You know how she gets. Well, I catch you at the park at six." Jane mentioned. She would occasionally meet up with Ryan at the park, even though it was abandoned. It had acted as sort of a sanctiouary through all the redicule they would recieve. Being a 'science geek' in junior high had gotten Jane a lot of mockery and with Ryan's metal arm... Let's just say it wasn't fun. She knew that everyone was just jealous of how well two different people could 'click' so to speak. She quickly walked out the front door to stand in the breeze of fall. She loved the smell of the autumn leaves that had just fallen and were now flying through the wind. She removed the handkerchief and let the sweat cool her forehead. She ran across the street into her aunt's driveway. Walking through the jungle-green door, she was greeted by a half-asleep, half-awake Aunt Becky. "Hello, how was your morning?" Jane asked sweetly, as she hung up her tool belt and keys. "Hmm? Oh... good." She replied groggily. Jane just smiled and ran upstairs to change, only to return downstairs to the kitchen. |
