What is the difference between a duck?

This thread is dedicated to the first round match up between the competitors listed in the title. You will have 2 weeks to compete however a generous gap of 1 week is allowed for a non posting period... if either competitor takes longer than 1 week to make a reply then their characters fate is instantly handed to their opponent and/or the judges and they will be declared the loser.

Begin with posts of your characters regaining consciousness and realizing that they are back in their natural bodies and retain all memories from the cafeteria.

Once again waking up from an artificially-induced coma, the armoured possum checked his purple suit for any signs of blood; that... dissection of one of the judges was rather bloody to say the least.
No blood... so whatever happens in there definitely doesn't cross over into this realm... he knew he was a blood thirsty git at the best of times, but that was impressive nonetheless. The fact that someone had a gaping stomach wound and had healed it up quickly meant nothing out here in reality.

Speaking of reality, he slowly dragged himself up to a knee, and then eventually fully upright. The reality of his situation was that he was now on his own, in a huge underground arena filled with a brutal, baying audience that was hungry for action and nothing less than full-on combat would suffice. The setting was far more harsh than the holo-projector showed in the cafe... barbed wire surrounding the 'ring'. No sky was visible, just earthy colours illuminated by lanterns and torches of a fire-based variety.
All around him he picked up the vibes of reds, oranges; sadistic and twisted minds. Upon seeing the possum rise to his feet the crowd roared with appreciation: they had been waiting for far too long for this fight to get underway. The other fights in this tournament had started from the sounds of things, clashing of swords and blasting of high-calibre guns being fired off could be faintly heard above the roars of the crowd... unless that was just normal activity for these parts.

A rumble beneath his feet reminded Adokas that it was a good thing to have done some homework before setting foot into the arena; briefly blipping his jetpack he floated to his right and landed on the next platform, the one he'd just been standing on having dropped down to the depths. The crowd gave the armoured possum an almight "boo" for having not gone down the hole. Even for the battle-hardened Adokas this was slightly unsettling.
"Quit yer yappin' you slags!" the dark one roared, unable to hear himself think over the crowds. Across the way he saw his opponent in the same unconscious state of mind that he'd previously occupied. Smirking, Adokas drew his sword. It would soon be time to ignore the peasantry that made up this congregation and begin doing what he loved best:

Annihilation.

Ryan's head felt fuzzy. He had just been rendered unconscious again by the judges; who's number having been decreased by a third was the latest memory he could recall.

As was the last time, he began to gather himself as he slowly slipped back into consciousness. His "slow recovery", however, was cut short, as Ryan felt the ground beneath him start of crumble. He quickly bounded off of the remaining surface beneath him and quickly clutched the edge of a platform residing next to the space where another platform once stood. While hanging off of the edge of one of several platforms which made up the floor of the arena, Ryan looked down into the abyss that was beneath him. He sighed a breath of relief as he pulled himself back onto the "surface". He looked at the area where the platform once stood, as a new, identical one materializing in it's place

After a quick pause for thought, he quickly straightened himself out before side-stepping to another platform. As he had expected, That platform too fell into the darkness below before being replaced as the previous one had. Ryan could hear distant boos and cries of disappointment, which he presumed was due to the fact no one was dead yet.
"Can't please everybody..." Ryan uttered under his breath to himself.

Looking around the field in which he was placed, he noticed he was placed back in the hellish domain he was revealed to before the trip to the cafeteria. He also heard metallic pings and clangs, which he only presumed to be the other contestants fighting.

After spending the time to become familiar as possibly with his current setting, Ryan looked across the rows of platforms at his opponent. The purple armored possum stood on the other end of the stage upon his own platform, apparently getting himself together, as Ryan was. But the time for discovery was over. The time for fighting had begun. Ryan clenched his fists as his eyes narrowed down to Adokas.
"Let's dance." Were the only words to leave his grinning mouth as he made a speeding dash towards his enemy.

Amongst the crowd, a lone salesman walked amongst the baying crowd, selling various items from a tray slung about his neck and waist. People called out for goods, and the salesman tossed them over. He wasn't much of a salesman, seeing as how all this was being put on for free by the three chiefs of the realm(the passing of one was unknown to the masses at this point, either that or he was ignorant to the media) and as such, he wasn't being paid to hand out snacks and suchlike.

A few people had thrown kebab sticks back at the hawk, in an attempt to turn him into shish kebab but failed. But he did have a nice collection of long, pointy sticks on his tray. It looked cluttered, and if he could get rid of them it was less litter to take back behind the scenes...
Holding one and examining it, the hawk grinned. He'd come up with an excellent idea.

"Buttscratcher! Come and get your buttscratcher!" he called out, holding up the once-upon-a-time-kebab-stick.
"Buttscratcher?" came a call.
"Buttscratcher!" the hawk replied, lobbing the stick right back at the turtle, catching him right in the eye. The turtle yelped - for obvious reasons. The hawk giggled; that'd teach the insolent whelp to be trying to skewer him in the first place.

On the battlefield, what were once normal civilised beings were now having to lower themselves to the level of the occupants of this hellish society.
Or at least, one of them would have to. Adokas paused to reflect on what was going on here - unruly masses, burning, innocents nowhere to be seen... if it wasn't for the fact that it all felt so false he could swear this was everything he'd wanted to build up, tear down, and then reconstruct in its place!

But now was not the time to reflect on the nature of these people, but Adokas knew that if they were indeed like him, they would cheer for the strong and destroy the weak. And Adokas knew that the strong had to prove themselves, by whatever means required. The possum was ready for that challenge, and across the way lay his next obstacle to greatness.
He eyed up his opponent, the next in a long line of victims. Ryan the hedgehog, an emo hedgehog by all accounts judging from the tuft of hair atop his head and the way the belt draped about his midsection. The right arm was something he needed to be aware of for it looked to be either heavily armoured or cybernetic in nature. Judging from the bulk and way it moved, it was inorganic and definitely not what mother Nature had intended.

And the red boy was now running towards him. He'd said something but Adokas was too far away to hear the quietly spoken words.
As Ryan began his charge, Adokas felt his platform beginning to give way already.. perhaps he could use this to his advantage. Using the rocket pack, he hopped onto the platform behind him, and then immediately the one behind him. His sword remained at the ready to deflect any blows that may come his way, and his armour would hopefully weather any magical attacks hurled his way.
As Adokas landed on the final platform, he saw the first platform wobble and begin to give way...

As Ryan continued his dash up towards Adokas, He slung his right arm back behind the rest of his body. He thought his opponent had already known about his prosthetic after Adokas attacked him along with Sebastian, but he must've been so engrossed in his battle with the blue hedgehog, he apparently hadn't figured it out, which Ryan gathered by his puzzled looks.

As Ryan's foot touched the first platform which Adokas was standing on, he felt it sink beneath his feet. He took a large step onto the next one, which also began to fall. He then used the collapsing row of platforms instead as stairs, leading him straight to his opposition. He anticipated that, at his own current lower position, the possum would try a downward sword swing or a some sort of kick. He wasn't worried, though.

The crowd was getting pumped, but not towards the possum. He was running and they sure as hell didn't like this. They failed to appreciate the tactical value of what the overlord was trying to achieve by collapsing the platforms. In anger, a few idiots in the crowd set off some flare guns, a wonderous bright red light illuminating everywhere in a much more noticeable fashion. It wouldn't affect the fighters one bit but hell they weren't allowed guns in with them...

Sat next to a candle lantern, a little pigeon fluffed its chest out a bit. It was a natural creature, not a Mobian like those beneath it. It felt hot in here, way too hot. All the bright lights hurt its eyes, and the sulphates in the air weren't being nice to his ability to breathe.
In the distance, it saw a small white light. It looked closer, cocking its head to one side for a brief moment. That white light looked cooling, soothing and possibly a way out. It liked the sound of that.
Side stepping a little on its perch, the pigeon flapped its wings and cooed. That very instant a flare descended from above and struck the bird, immediately setting it alight. Gasping out frantically, the pigeon slipped off its perch and plummeted downwards.

As Ryan kept moving forwards preparing for an attack of some kind, Adokas raised an eyebrow as a small fireball fell from the ceiling, down in to the depths of the bottomless pit. The way in which it kept falling and falling and falling...
The possum shook his head. The red guy had jumped one platform, was on the way up the next and would soon be onto him. He had to act quickly.

There weren't many more platforms behind him, and this one would soon give way. Perhaps this could be used to an advantage of some kind... it was highly unlikely that the hedgehog would keep running forever, and his backpack would run out of charge before long. He'd blipped it a couple of times and already it was low enough to give him cause for concern.
Leaving the rocket pack out of it for now, Adokas took a couple of steps to his left and jumped to the platform nearest to him there. Assessing the situation the possum swung his sword twice, ripping the very fabrics of reality as two magical pulses of swirling energy went flying straight towards his opponent one after the other. None of this fancy trying to anticipate a dodge or aim in two places at once: Adokas was going straight for Ryan's chest upon appearing at the possum's previous platform. He tried to time the attack so that when Ryan was finally on that particular surface, the blows would hit home.
If he dodged one, he'd dodge both. If one struck home, he'd be heavily hit by a second striking home immediately after. Either way his momentum would be altered in Adokas' favour... fingers crossed. The bolts spiralled and twisted their way forwards rapidly, screaming through the air as they consumed and burnt each molecule they passed through.

Finally, the crowd had reason to get on their feet.

Ryan, still stepping up from lower platform to residing upper platform, was surprised that his opponent had not taken the obvious tactic of swinging at his own feet towards Ryan or kicking him, but instead leaped off to the side. As Adokas swung his sword, Ryan wondered as to why. Ryan wasn't anywhere near him, and wasn't heading in his direction. Just as he was about to let out a boastful taunt, he realized what exactly the slash was for.

As the large sword fell towards Adokas's feet, a orb of raw energy escaped from it's edge. Ryan, unlike the armored possum, has absolutely no shielding - save anything formed from his arm- and mostly relied on his agility and speed to dodge his enemy's attacks.

As the blast neared him, Ryan decided to try something different. Instead of finishing his run and going on top of the platform, he crouched down as he arrived on the platform directly in front of the one Adokas had been residing at seconds earlier. As the one he was on stated to fall, he jumped underneath it, narrowly missing the bottom of it with his head. As he flew through the air, he heard the soft buzzing of the energy attacks nearing. He had only just grasped the edge of the next platform over as the blasts hit the platform behind him, sending it crumbling down, grazing the tip of his quills as it collapsed.

He then, once again, lifted himself onto the main level of the arena with a grunt. After regaining his stance, he lifted his right arm. the sound of twisting metal and parts grinding against parts was heard, and his hand relapsed and accordioned into his wrist. A long metal section then popped out of the cuff of his jacket, and it started glowing a deep orange as the last sections of his arm folded into their new positions.
"Have at thee!" was Ryan's battle cry as he jumped up and prepared a slash right at one of the joints of his opponent's armor.

*blink*

The swirling masses of raw magical energies seared through the air, impacting heavily with the platform and disintegrating it - with a degree of satisfaction, it should be added. But through the brand new dust cloud that had been created, Adokas had his eyes peeled.

The blasts hadn't struck the target; the hedgehog having chosen to utilise the platforms to somehow get underneath the shots, and use the falling surface as a shield of kinds.
An excellent tactic, the possum smirked, revelling in this fight. Battle was well and truly joined, he was definitely fighting someone with intelligence and cunning.
His eyes darted left and right, watching out for any sign of movement - and from below there he was, pulling himself up from the depths. As he did so, his robotic limb appeared to be transforming, a clank and a click later and an orange blade slid delicately out from within the metallic casing it was stored in, replacing the fingered appendage that was there previously.
"Have at thee!" Ryan yelled, jumping up and slashing downwards towards Adokas' armour.

Adokas still had his sword drawn and held ready for battle - this was now about to go global. As his adversary descended, Adokas side-stepped - he himself being an expert swordsman, he knew exactly how to counter this. As he stepped outside of the sword - his torso facing full-face with Ryan's - his own sword roared upwards and slightly outwards in a circular sweep and clashed with Ryan's in a parrying move.
But rather than simply deflect it, he flicked his wrist and kept pressure and momentum on the blade. He forced it downwards in a smooth motion, the aim being to embed the wrecked thing into the platform. Given the fact Ryan was jumping into the attack and was being aided to its new home, there was high hope of this working. And as this sword was a part of the boy wonder, if the platform fell with the sword stuck in it then Ryan would be gone, and that would be the end of it.

But the evil overlord wanted to enjoy this a little more before the end.
Whether the sword got impaled on the platform or not, he would wait for Ryan to land before following up with a swift punch to the face. It sure as hell wouldn't knock the guy out, but it'd surely dent his features, maybe bloody his nose and most definitely piss him the hell off.
"This is MY fight!" Adokas yelled, fist raised as he prepared to lash out.

As Ryan felt the scorching hot air flow through his fur as he fell towards his enemy, legs spread and blade-arm slung behind him, he let out an emphatic -yet slightly cheery, in some way or another- battle cry. As he lifted said arm and attempted a slash across the small fabric - or possible chainmail, he couldn't really tell- opening between Adokas's deep purple breastplate and abdomen piece, he felt the contact against his arm. But it was not of the possum's body, but his opponent's sword -A simple parrying move, Ryan wasn't surprised- as it guided his own blade into the platform they were both now standing on. Being composed of magic and diamond -as it appeared to Ryan anyway- the sword wasn't scratched, ever after making contact with a 'blazing' hot energy saber. The platform however, was not so lucky. Being composed of stone, or a similar looking material, it was swept right through in Ryan's averted attack motion.
"Ha!" Ryan knew that the possum would have expected him to get stuck in the platform, and was sure there was at least a dull surprise waiting for him if he looked up.

Big mistake; as Adokas might have put it.

As Ryan's head tilted up, and his lips beginning to form the words of another clever taunt, He had only a split second of warning. The black leather glove was only an inch or two from his face, and, in another position he might have dodged it, but, with the momentum from his previous enthusiastic swing into Adokas, he had no way. His face fell forward right into Adokas' clenched fist, and, with a small 'crack', he fell backward, almost off of the platform and into the empty hole where a platform would be residing.

But no. As his own warm blood trickled down his muzzle and he felt the wind grazing his backside as he fell backwards, He felt something else.

Adrenaline.

This whole tournament, Ryan had been quieter than his usual self. less "fun" than his usual self. But he was done being on the defensive. He was done keeping quiet. He was done playing 'emo-boy'. It was time to take real action. It was time for these bozos to meet the real Ryan.

As Ryan fell back onto the platform behind him -that had formed seconds earlier- he threw both arms behind his head. His right arm converted as he swept it back, and he grabbed the upper edge of the large stone slab. He bent his legs into his chest for maximum momentum. His whole body now folded up as much as possible, his shoes now spontaneously caught aflame. It was small at first, on his soles, but then spread all over his whole feet. While still being thrust back and held diagonally in the air by his opponent's swing, he pushed forward. His whole body unfolded into a straight line, his feet now made direct contact to the possum's chest as the fire was 'transferred'. Using that kick's momentum to stand himself back up on a new platform -one not set off yet- He stood up, wiped the blood dripping down his face off with his sleeve, and stood in an attack-ready position as his fists too caught on fire. Making allusion to the purple armored fiend's earlier comment he said, with a slight, childish grin;
"Are you sure about that?"

Picking himself up from the floor, Adokas didn't even bother to dust himself off. He looked towards his opponent with an evil glint in his eye, and a swagger in his posture.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's rewind a little, find out exactly why the warrior possum was on the ground in the first place.

It began with a parry flowing into an elaborate ruse to pin his opponent to the ground. What Adokas, as experienced as he was, failed to take into consideration was that the enemy wasn't using a normal sword, but in fact some kind of heated lance. As such it was really little to no effort to just pull the edge of the weapon through the platform, rather akin to a hot knife cutting butter.
But that wasn't why Adokas was on his knees.

No, that was when Ryan revealed his pyromaniac tendencies and enveloped himself in an enormous flame, quite possibly because Adokas had given him a jolly good whack in the face. The audience were absolutely loving how this was developing, and fighting even began breaking out in some parts as people began picking winners - and naturally not agreeing.
As Ryan's arm pulled back into a hand and he kicked his way angrily out of the situation he found himself in, Adokas found himself being used as a springboard of some kind. His armour was in light mode and whilst it could handle the flames - they technically being a form of magic - the double feet into the chest was a bit different.

The armour dented and buckled a little, enough to make Adokas feel the brunt of the blow and propelling him backwards, towards the edge of the soon-to-collapse platform. His chest now felt a little wheezy but it was a light winding, nothing more. His behind was a little sore from the impact too, but it wouldn't stop him from slicing and dicing.

And so we return to the current point in time. Ryan was looking rather emo stood there covered in his flaming suit thing, Adokas thought, and would just wind him up even more.
"Mate, I'm unbelievably sure. A good job you're on fire-"

As he said this he took a step forwards, the momentum being all he needed.
"-because I'm in the mood FOR KEBAB!" he roared, propelling himself forwards in a Charging Thrust. Rather than jump backwards and use that tried and tested form of defense that Ryan might be expecting, the evil Overlord was now going to attack with all he had. His rocket pack fired up instantly and he flew across the broken platform extremely rapidly, not even blinking as it dropped down into the depths. His aim was to pierce Ryan straight in the largest visible body part - the torso. It didn't matter where, anywhere was good right now!

After his blow to Adokas' chest, Ryan flipped his legs over his head, finishing his partial-backflip upright on his feet, and stood on the newly generated platform. He took a second to dust himself off, and redirected his attention on his opponent, who was doing the very same. It looks like his attack was at least somewhat effective, as there where a few new dents in Adokas' deep purple breastplate.

Ryan had only just finished getting himself up when Adokas had charged at him with his giant buster sword. Ryan wasn't worried. He had an infallible sense of timing, and had gathered the average time a platform stood after being "activated". As He just stood there, he looked at his wrist, as if there was a watch there -which there wasn't- in a taunting-like manner.

As the tip of Adokas' blade was mere millimeters from Ryan's forehead, He disappeared. That might be what it would seem like to Adokas anyway, Ryan had thought. Ryan had timed himself not to get out of the way, but to fall down, which was almost certainly a direction his enemy wasn't expecting. As the platform beneath his feet fell further into the darkness, Ryan Grabbed the bottom edge of the platform which he was sure was holding up an at least half-puzzled Possum.

In one swift motion, Ryan swung himself over to the other side of the -bottom of the- platform, having a whole other platform worth of space to swing thanks to Adokas. He spun himself around, now having his body face upwards. He crouched once again, and gave a swift kick to the back of his oppressor's armor, hoping to push him off the platform and into the space he was standing at moments before.

Master of Darkness (Lord Adokas)

Fair Play
10/10
The Master of Darkness is also the master of fair play???? Or at least good enough to look tied for perfection. You took hits and made believable, dodge-able, attacks that didn't seem like they were all going to blast hell to hell 2. You played an up tempo game but believably so.

Grammar
10/10
I rarely see you make grammatical errors, your words flow and you are definitely clear and precise in this match.

Adaptation to Setting
10/10
Both you and Ryan took account of the arena and used it to your advantage. In your case, taking the sneaky and tactical usage by trying to trick your opponent onto pre-activated platforms to send him falling down.

Entertainment Value
10/10
Did someone earn a 40? I was entertained by your description of off field action as well as great description and fluid action within, you've been one of the stronger RPers I have ever run into and on a consistent basis. FOR KEBAB!

40/40

RyanDaHedgehog (Ryan)

Fair Play
10/10
You didn't force unbelievable shots or make outstandingly bad actions at all, creative use of the arena is also not subtracted from fair play for obvious reasons, I think you gave MoD as fair a game as anyone could hope for.

Grammar
10/10
I could've sworn I saw a mistake that bothered me on the first read through.. but if I can't find it by my second run through I cant knock you for it. Your words, too, flowed well and were very cleanly executed.

Adaptation to Setting
10/10
Your adaptive was as good at being direct as MoD's was for being tactical, using platform undersides to dodge attacks and using falling plats as stairs were both interesting new combat-oriented uses for battle. There was a little less description of the surroundings than th basics but I cant give you a 9 because of your opponents added crowd happenings, because your usage was also very admirable.

Entertainment Value
10/10
I was honestly exited when reading posts from both of you, you two had a chemistry going that more than showed as the short match duration wore on... this is another I'd hope to see finished privately at some point if the opportunity were to arise. Your creative use of the arena and some acrobatic maneuvers as well as some nice tactical thought along with good description give you really all I could ask for. I should... I REALLY should dock you for that one really short reply... but in rewarding your effort I would rather give you a score you really deserve.

40/40

---

Kind of nice to see the first tie coming in a perfect fashion on both ends.. in the case of a tie for either judge, the judge must throw a tiebreaker half point in the corner of whichever combatant they ultimately prefer and explain exactly why.. to lessen the chance of an overall tie. Essentially, if TUC also records a perfect and chooses a halfer opposite me, the match is locked in a tie.... and at this point, there is no plan C.. ^^;

As awesome as the both of you role played I'd have to give the edge to MoD, the extra description going beyond what was asked for in sequences that tied setting details into the action earned it. The pigeon falling into the abyss noticed by Adokas, as well as the barely BARELY higher average on post size (since the quality of both is essentially equalized, quantity helps decide) I have to give the extra halfer to MoD... though I wish I could toss one of you into a vacant spot and keep you both going. However, at least whoever loses has a role to look forward to still.

Current total
MoD- 40.5/40 *counting tiebreaker halfer*
Ryan- 40/40

MASTER OF DARKNESS

Fair Play: 10/10
- In amongst that little scuffle, you stuck to your profile, acted realistically and took a hit from your opponent. Not an awful lot to go off, but from what's there it's excellent work.
Grammar: 9/10
- Tempted to give you a ten for this, but your grammar just isn't perfect enough. The only things that set you back were a few missing commas, a bit of hyphen abuse and one or two awkward looking sentences.
Adaptation to Environment: 9/10
-Couple of nice lure tactics there, and the sudden jumps did make you expend more of your fuel. Well played.
Entertainment: 9/10
-Your posts were well written and your characterisation and dark humour were excellent. It would take too long to pick out indiividual moments of awesome, so I'll just skip to saying that you would have earned yourself a ten if the 'buttscratcher' joke had actually had anything to do with the tournament though; at least the pidgeon caught on fire and plunged into the Pit of Doom for a reason. ;)

RYANDAHEDGEHOG

Fair Play: 10/10
-In amongst that little scuffle, you stuck to your profile, acted realistically and took a hit from your opponent. Not an awful lot to go off, but from what's there it's excellent work.
Grammar: 9/10
-It's "'whose' number", not "'who's' number". D: Most of the things that dragged you down here were little grammatical mistakes like this, but nothing major enough to really drag you down.
Adaptation to Environment: 10/10
-Just wow. You SWUNG UNDERNEATH one of the platforms. O_O That and your other tricks with the falling tiles was some of the best stuff I've seen out of this entire round. Great work!
Entertainment: 8/10
-Some great description there and your posts were thick with characterisation ('Adrenaline.' RAWR! XD ). I like the little 'Kid Gloves Are Coming Off' moment you had too, that was cool.

MoD: 37
Ryan: 37

... That wasn't supposed to happen. *scratches head and redoes the maths* Heeeeck. Well, let's add the scores to my colleagues and...

MoD: 77.5
Ryan: 77

... If it weren't for that tie-breaker half-point, this match would be drawn. Wow. O_O You guys are good. In any case, it seems like MoD is the winner thanks only to a tie-breaker point. A pity; I prefer clear cut cases m'self.

What is the difference between a duck?

In one swift motion, Ryan swung himself over to the other side of the -bottom of the- platform, having a whole other platform worth of space to swing thanks to Adokas. He spun himself around, now having his body face upwards. He crouched once again, and gave a swift kick to the back of his oppressor's armor, hoping to push him off the platform and into the space he was standing at moments before.

"Awww we cant let the most blood thirsty go now"

With a snap of his fingers, Sadistic made Adokas dissipate (back to the cafeteria).

(Exit Adokas)

"Sorry to intrude but I feel like you've outstayed your welcome.... hehehehehe.."

The mildly toned comical laugh was followed by the platform Ryan was on, not breaking, but gaining the properties of quicksand. Grasping for edges of the now unsolid surface and struggling only helped him through the liquid cement like tile as he fell through into the darkness.

(Ryan is now eligible for the Void.)

"Oh well.. it was a good fight while it lasted.."

He raises his ring hand and taps the shiny red sphere atop it's structure.

"Don't you think so.. yess you dooooo" He spoke quietly at it with a sarcastic sort of baby tone as it flashes red soon after.

Sitting back in his chair he relaxes with a small smile.

"Why does it feel so good.. to be so bad...?"
