Why does everyone love Metal Sonic so much?

I see the figurine topic has 43 replies, the Metal Sonic skin is winning the new skin and I just hear that people love Sonic CD. Well, I like Metal Sonic, he's just not my favorite. Note that this is not a rant.

I just want to know why people like Metal Sonic so much. He's cool, but I look at him as nothing more than a robot that is a side-enemy to Eggman. I'd rather have an all-out "alive" enemy, but that's just my opinion. Still, Metal Sonic is cool. i just want to know what's so great about him.

He's never had too much of a personality, even in the comics, so I have to say I agree here that I simply don't see the appeal to him. But maybe that's part of it: people like things that look AWESOME and do AWESOME stuff like FLY AND BLOW STUFF UP. People don't generally like Sonic for the story and character development, at least not initially.

What I could never undertand is why everyone keeps calling Metal Sonic a 'he', as a robot it has no gender to speak of.

Apparently, machines are better than warriors of flesh and blood. That's the mindset modern kiddies with their foolish naivety take to things in any case.

Doesn't mean they're necessarily right for thinking so, but eh. They'll learn their lesson once magic returns. *nod nod* Screw the robots, I have LIGHTNING FINGERS!

There's a difference between sex and gender. Gender is psychological. Metal Sonic is a badass, so therefore must be male.

Possibly because this robot makes Eggman look like a genius for building it?

Plus Metal Sonic is the greatest creation that old Eggy has ever made.

EVER, being the emphasized word.

Eighteen was right, character development is what makes Sonic characters above many other franchises. Metal Sonic does lack emotion. I like him, but not as much as the "living" characters.

And Metal Sonic can be considered male as he has copied Sonic's DNA.

That takes care of him.

Now back to the topic at hand. Why do people like Metal Sonic so much? Well, here’s a question; What is there to hate about him? Not much, really? Sure, there are some that don’t like how Sonic Heroes portrayed him, or so I’ve heard, but you have to factor that Heroes was the game that really made him popular.

Now, I know what’s probably on your mind; ‘But what about Sonic CD?’ Well the thing is, Sonic CD wasn’t all that well known when it first came out. After all, it was released for the SEGA CD, a system that had a short shelf like thanks to a low reception. Sure, nearly everyone’s heard about Sonic CD today- thanks to Gems Collection-but when it was first released in 1993, not many people knew about it.

So, why do people like Metal Sonic in the first place? There are several reasons. First of all, he is capable of keeping up with Sonic very well, an attribute that only a couple of select characters (*coughShadowcough*) share. That, and the fact that he can use many of Sonic’s skills quite well, makes him a big threat to the blue blur. Then, you have to factor out that many people think he looks cool, with his well-detailed design and an all. He’s a villain Sega put a lot of effort into, and those aspects are just some of the reasons Metal Sonic is so popular.

I think it might be because of the recurring theme he represents; he's an antagonist based directly off of the main protagonist and has a recurring rivalry with him. Similar enemies constantly rivaling each other trying to be the best is a common theme in a lot of media, and it's usually pretty popular. I also feel this is why Shadow seems to be so popular as well.

Dang. Anyways...

I like Metal Sonic, or at least his OVA version, because there he did have a personality, or at least developed one at the end. I guess, too, that he was the evil version of Sonic at the time, at people like evilness. (Of course, now we have Shadow...)

Because he's an evil Sonic that poses a threat without having to reach for a gun or Chaos Emerald. Of course, they help a LOT, but he doesn't need it.

Well, now that Shadow was created, doesn't he serve Metal Sonic's purpose. I guess not because he's only half evil, but still...
