I have the Sonic 06 models in .3DS format. I was wondering if there is a way to open the 3DS files and edit them for free (e.g., coloring them, texture stuff). Any programs that will do that?

What is the difference between a duck?

First of all, it was a bad location for your topic, so I moved it to more of a help oriented section.

Next, .3DS files are 3DSMax programs.

So you need that program to open them. Not sure if there is an alternative.

Doesn't Maya do this sort of stuff too? Or is my modelling expertise out of date/incorrect?

Ah goody, my field. ^^

Well, a few programs can open 3DS files. But the only one powerful enough to open the files you are trying to is in itself, 3DS max. Your only real option has a trial version, if you don't want to pay.

Just out of sheer curiosity, how much does it cost to download the full suite?

$159.90. I would do the equation for Euros and Pounds but I'm far too lazy.

About 100 quid, it's safe to say and I can't be bothered to afford that...

A little off topic, but what would you do with it?

I would probably use the models for films and such after coloring them.

In that case, try using a program designed to do those things, not just a file opener.

You might actually be able to open .3DS files in Blender. Blender's an open source alternative to 3D Studio MAX (means that it's free to use and completely legal), though it takes some time to learn it. You can find it at http://www.blender.org

According to its features section, it can work with the following 3D file types:
Quote:

3D
3D Studio, AC3D, COLLADA, FBX Export, DXF, Wavefront OBJ, DEC Object File Format, DirectX, Lightwave, MD2, Motion Capture, Nendo, OpenFlight, PLY, Pro Engineer, Radiosity, Raw Triangle, Softimage, STL, TrueSpace, VideoScape, VRML, VRML97, X3D Extensible 3D, xfig export

Thanks for the reminder Cy-Fox! I forgot that Blender would do that sort of thing. However, when I click the import button, select 3DS, I get a message saying: "Script error: Check console" or something like that. So, I check the console, and I get this HUGE line of code, all scattered and stuff.
