Lava Reef Act 1
|
![]() Developer: Konami Productions Genre: Action Adventure > Modern Release Date: June 12th, 2008 (North American Release) Number of Players: 1 Platforms: PS3 Presentation: Metal Gear Solid 4 is the 6th installment of the Metal Gear series, and the 4th installment of the Metal Gear Solid series. It features Solid Snake, the main protagonist of the series, who has undergone accelerated aging due to the fact that he is a clone. He must infiltrate a war-torn battlefield in the Middle East to track down Liquid Ocelot, who has been in hiding since the Big Shell Incident of MGS2, in a Middle Eastern PMC camp. When he arrives in the Middle East, however, he is placed smack-dab in the middle of a conflict with the PMC's and the local militamen. Upon arriving at the PMC camp where Liquid is housed, he finds that he has taken control of the entire military through the system it is connected to. He escapes and Snake is forced to try and stop him by chasing him to various points around the globe to ensure the safety of humanity. Snake will encounter different foes, including the all new Metal Gears, otherwise known as Gekkos, and will use all new gear, such as the Solid Eye, which gives im a visual layout of his senses, the Metal Gear Mk. II, which Snake can use for reconnaissance of an area, and Octocamo, which will allow him to blend in with his surroundings in real time, allowing him to sneak like never before. His arsenal will span over 70 different weapons, ranging from pistols to rifles to grenades, and even rocket launchers! Old characters known throughout the series will make appearances, as well as new ones arriving on the scene. It also makes numerous nudges towards long time players of the series. The final chapter in the Metal Gear Solid series, Snake's final mission will determine the ultimate fate of the planet, and, more importantly, himself. The game is divided into 5 Acts and an Epilogue, and has 5 difficulties. (Liquid Easy, Naked Normal, Solid Normal, Big Boss Hard, and The Boss Extreme), and clocks in, with cutscenes, at about 20-30 hours depending on your play style. Gameplay: The gameplay of the Metal Gear Solid series has always been one with choice. You have different options on how to traverse the area. You could either sneak through unseen, take out the enemy quietly, or run in with guns blazing. MGS4 has taken these basic principles and expanded them to make them even more flexible. With the new over the shoulder aiming principle, it has become even easier to neutralize the foe. It has also expanded on its first-person shooting aspect, allowing you to move while firing in first-person. Snake also tackles the hand to hand combat skills of Big Boss, using CQC, or Close Quarters Combat, to neutralize his foes this time around. Snake can throw his enemies to the floor, use them as human shields, capture them and slit their throats, or place them in choke holds to knock them out. He also carries a Stun Knife, another new concept, which combines the functionality of a knife and a stun gun, allowing you a weapon to either kill or knock out your enemies at all times. The game adds new concepts, such as moving while crouching, inching slowly on the floor, or hanging down off ledges from a prone position. It also expands on old concepts, such as hold ups, which now give Snake the option to perform a search, and using CQC more effectively. Snake's arsenal spans over an impressive 70 weapons, most of which are customizable, varying from add-ons such as suppressors, sights, laser sighting, flashlights, grips, and others. For the first time, Snake can truly 'procure on sight', as he is able to take any weaponry dropped by the enemy or found on the battlefield. The game also features a man named Drebin, who Snake will encounter on the battlefield, who can sell Snake naked guns and launder any guns Snake already has, using a system called 'Drebin Points' as currency. Any excess weaponry Snake procures on the battlefield will be sold to Drebin in exchange for points. Octocamo is a very useful tool, allowing Snake's suit to mimic the shape, texture, and heat patter of whatever he presses on. Simply lie on the ground or lean up against a wall, and within seconds, Snake's suit will look almost exactly like the surface he is touching. And of course, Snake can always hide in his trusty cardboard box, which has also received an upgrade for. Snake now can use an empty drum can to hide, tilting in on its side to make a quick getaway if he is caught. Most of the game is centered in a war zone, so, naturally, you can turn the tide of battle. Start killing the PMC forces or destroying key PMC equipment will allow the local militiamen to see Snake as an ally, naturally making the course of sneaking much more flexible. Kill them, however, and you will be faced with two common enemies to deal with, making it much harder for Snake to remain unseen. Once you are done with the single player game, however, you can make a jump to the online counterpart, Metal Gear Online. You can customize and create you own character. What they wear, their face, and even their voice and sayings! The game has a hard learning curve, but once you get used to it, it can actually be quite fun. Graphics and Sound: No doubt about it, Kojima Productions and Konami went all out on making this game as fun to look at and hear as it is fun to play. The visuals are stunning, from the war-torn streets of the Middle East, the lush jungles of South America, to the quiet majesty of Eastern Europe, this game is breathtaking. The characters look sleek and expertly designed. The game runs at a constant 60fps, regardless of the intense action going on all around you. Dirt will kick up into Snakes face, frost will build up, blood will splatter, and water will trickle onto the screen. Snake's suit will react to blood, water, snow, and dust. Even the enemies look realistic down to the tiniest detail, including reflectiveness of visors or other material, facial expressions, and actions and reactions. The gameplay graphics look just as impressive as the visuals from the cut scenes. At no point in this game is there a lack of visual quality. The game also feels like a real live battlefield. Explosions go off, soldiers fall, orders are issued, guns are fired, helicopters whirl in the distance, and so on. Even when the heat of battle resides and Snake makes his way through the tranquil nature, it sounds as though you are there. Voice acting is also very well done, and the expressions the actors use fit the respective roles very nicely. There are subtle moments where voice acting feels forced, but overall it retains a high degree of excellency. Summary: While this game may certainly may not be quite as legendary as its predecessors, it is definitely no less fun. The game allows itself to lean towards both new players and veterans of the series alike. The control scheme is less clunky than previous titles, and there are tons of Easter eggs and nudges towards previous MGS titles that will bring a smirk to the faces of veterans and fanboys. While bits of the story may seem far fetched at times, it still remains expertly told. I cannot picture the end of Solid Snake's mission happening in a more riveting way than it has. This is a game that all MGS fans and newcomers alike should play. Though I highly suggest that newcomers play the previous 3 as well. Reviewer's Score: 9.5/10 |

Well seeing as how MGS4 is sort of like that, it may as well be a movie review.

I hate you for playing this game. ;_____; Thanks for the review. I'm... kind of motivated to go buy a PS3 now. I still play my Metal Gear Solid PSP game after beating it. Twice. Perhaps I need this game. And from the trailers I've seen... man. |

Eh if I do get a PS3 it wont be for this game... been there and snored hard. 22 minutes of Intro is just impossible to look past and the other hours upon hours of cutscene slathering overdid it. Overall a decent title though. |

Ah, so you're not the kinda guy that plays for the plots, I assume? I personally think the MGS plots are amazing. I remember knowing all about Metal Gear Solid 2 when I was younger just because I would sit around and watch my brother play it all day. I think the plots are the best part of the game, or at least a close second behind gameplay. They're pretty... out there, but they're awesome. But hey, if you're not a plot person, that's cool. *shrugs* |

I agree...they really are too heavy-handed on the story in this one. Yes, the story is great. But once I got over that I kept urging the characters to stop talking already so I could go back to playing. There were some scenes that, quite frankly, felt like they were just wasting my time. Like, do I really need to watch Sunny cook eggs between each chapter? Really, do I? And the ending of this game clocks in at almost 60 minutes. Yeah, the ending...after you use the controller for the last time. There really is no need for this. It felt like I was watching the ending of the last Lord of the Rings movie all over again. Fortunately though, you can pause in the middle of lengthy cutscenes if you need to get up for something. And granted I love the rest of the game. I just really hate being frequently interrupted by huge cutscenes. |

Metal Gear Solid 4 was a great game, though the storyline was way too long for this one. It was a beautiful story. Ive played the series off and on. I've beat the second and third games, and just recently beaten the fourth game. I have however played the first one to some extent. Its a great series, with a beautiful story. Metal Gear Solid 4 may have been more movie than game, but instead of putting it as a movie either, lets call it an: Interactive Movie. |
