Sonic Is Struggling?; Not really.

Who I'll be, nobody knows!

While I'm sure the title of this topic will undoubtedly spark irrelevant quality arguments that will make me facepalm, I've still found some stats that I think are interesting enough to share.

First is the amount of money that Sonic was able to wrack up in 2008. He was the 11th biggest seller last year, having made a fair $163 million. With only four games having contributed to the amount, that really wasn't a bad fiscal year for the hedgehog or Sega, now was it?

Now while we all know that Sonic is a seller, did you ever wonder how much time on average people play the games? Apparently, Nintendo releases stats on the Wii Channel that show their average playtime of the 2.4 million users who actually contribute their play times per week. As of July 1st, Sonic ranks as follows--

Sonic Unleashed (November 2008) – 14 hours, 16 minutes
Sonic and the Black Knight (March 2009) – 12 hours, 3 minutes
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (November 2007): 11 hours, 25 minutes
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity (January 2008) – 11 hours, 1 minute
Sonic and the Secret Rings (February 2007) – 10 hours, 24 minutes

-- Again, not bad at all. Nice to be reminded every once in awhile that the hedgehog still gets some love.

I know how recruiting.

In before the 'irrelevant quality arguments' start!

Back on topic, that isn't bad at all. I knew Sonic still had it in him.

Thank you Bliz, I love yo-er I mean I love that your so able to have a good, logically backed counter argument to the many whiners of this fanbase(Which to me seems lacking here thank goddess.)

Hey, VladDrakken, where did you get that avatar? It looks like it's from a Sonic game. [/off topic]

As for playtime, I can get very into a Sonic game. Sometimes, I completely forget to eat, especially when I'm playing a new (to me) Sonic game.

Of course he still does well, although his products aren't of the highest quality he's still a big player.

Platformers of this kind are dying species these days, so the Hedgehog hasn't got much competition, apart from a certain italian. Plus how many times I've seen parents wanting to pick a good game for their little one, and they see a hedgehog with a grin, cartoonish atmoshpere and little to no violence. I bet Sonic makes most of his sales on the little gamers.

Actions speak louder than words.
The 163 Million makes sense, considering the great sales of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games, so one shouldn't be too surprised about that.

The other data confuses me a tad, if there taking the average since release, then of course the later releeases are going to have longer play times (with the exception of M@s) due to the eariler releases being out longer and thus reducing the average playtime.

Those stats would be much higher if they counted all the versions of their games. If only Sega had one of those.

I, alone, have played Sonic Unleashed for between 40-50 hours.

The game save says I played Sonic Heroes for over 150 HOURS
I don't even like that game lol. Shadow The Hedgehog doesn't have a timer on save games, but I've probably played that for over twice as long!

It is really nice to see that Sonic still gets attention and ranking 11th overall is actually really impressive. So well done to the Blue Blur, after all these years he still has it in him.

Time does not always mean enjoyment, and complaining is not irrelevant if it has to do with the game. Trust me. I played through the crappy levels of Unleashed just to beat it, not because it was in any way amusing.

The only reason I played through the Ps2 version was so I wasn't being a hypocrite when I say "play the game completely before you state an opinion." The amateur generation Wii/Ps2 versions of Sonic Unleashed still suck.

Exactly my view on it as well. I did the same with Mario Galaxy, which I didn't like.

I thought Mario Galaxy was a litle step off of Mario's universe. I mean, Sonic came out in Space before mario did. MAWHIO'S UH RIPWAF!!!11one! I just think that Mario doesn't fit in space. Sonic fits because of his conepts.

When I first heard of Mario Galaxy I thought "What, mutant alien balls of ooze came to probe Princess Peach?" Xp

Unleashed > Super Mario Galaxy (that's saying a lot)

Super Mario Galaxy is going to be ten times worse. How bad can Mario get? Honestly?

I agree, Sonic was first in space, as I've mentioned before.

Well, I expect more off of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, as I adore the Ds one. :D

Hopefully, Sega gets back in gear.
s I had no fath in Sonic after Sonic Next-Gen, Unleashed is a revival to me. :3 Hopefully they make an Unleashed with only Daytime levels. I bet you'd like that, Ray.

To be honest, the Werehog Gameplay is the only reason I still like Sonic CD more than Sonic Unleashed. It brought it down, but not a lot, as SU is better than S3&K in my opinion.

I actually think a whole lot of the Sonic Fandom who do not like the night time levels of Unleashed would like it a lot of they made just day time levels (or should I say levels that are all done in the more retro style but in both day time and night time).

It would be a big plus that's for sure and I would definitely view it as a step forward. I guess it is just people these days that play games want either sports themed, FPS or general shooting game or JRPGs. No one really wants a platforming game, no one really wants to collect so many objects before the next level opens, one really wants a big complex story, so those games that used to be like that that have survived until now become gimmicks.

Actually, I wasn't a fan of the day levels either. They were too fast and obstacle deprived. Adventure series was better.

Well what all reviewers tell us. I have never feared his downfall. He's an icon that won't vanish without a fellow word says so.
Yet 11th, isn't all that bad for sure. In time, I bet he become even better then the Italian plumber. That's just me seeing in the future that is, like a true fan, like Bliz's taken over Sonic Team, and make some true quality gaming. ^^ And, no, I ain't trying to be overly nice. Just saying.

I highly doubt he beat Mario. Super Mario Galaxy was released in 2008, and that game actually won awards. In the plural.

Anyway, I don't think the sales of Sonic are at all up for debate. However, as we know, sales don't necessarily mean quality ;) . SEGA was, is, and will likely continue to be the king of hype. If Hitler was around today, he'd ditch Goebbels for them XD .
