Okay, I know this has been done a million times, but nobody seems to ask for a description.
So please share.

Top 3:
3. Game: Sonic Unleashed (Day)
Favourite Character: Sonic
Favourite Stage: Arid Sands-Day, Dragon Road-Day
What was so good about it: I loved the feeling of speed, what Sonic has been lacking these last few years. I also loved how it changed between 3rd and 2nd person perspectives. Felt like the good old days.

2. Game: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Favourite Character: Shadow, Knuckles
Favourite Stage: White Jungle and Meteor Herd
What was so good about it: Lots of fun, I was really psyched about how I could play with all these different characters, it gave the game a whole different feel from the other sonic games, whiel still retaining his trademark speed in Sonic and Shadow.

1. Game: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles
Favourite Characters: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles
Favourite Stage: Ice Cap Zone and Sky Sanctuary Zone
What was so good about it: Pretty Much Everything. Great music, great plot, It brought back Sonic's 2-d routes and combines them with knuckles-oriented gameplay...it was just awesome in every way. And SAVE FEATURES. I couldn't stand having to restart all the time in sonic 1 and 2.

Now you can pick a bottom 3 if you want to, but i don't really hate 3 games in general, so I won't.
If you always look back, you can never move forward.

3. Game: Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Favourite Character: Tails
Favourite Stage: Ice Cap Zone
What was so good about it: The gameplay was simply awesome, the music was fantastic, and the level design was the best in any Sonic game ever.

2: Game: Sonic Adventure DX
Favourite Character: Tails
Favourite Stage: Speed Highway
What was so good about it: The remake of a Dreamcast classic. With impressive gameplay, and the ability to play as six different characters, this game rocks!

1: Game: Sonic Unleashed
Favourite Character: Sonic
Favourite Stage: Holoska-Day
What was so good about it: The daytime stages were fantastic, simply fanstastic. I loved the feel of speed and the seemless switches between 2D and 3D.

3:Sonic Unleashed (Xbox 360 version)
Favorite Character: Sonic (both ways)
Favorite Stage: Eggmanland
Good: The stoyline finally wasn't one of those "OMG! I'm gonna cry" emo japanese stories. It was taken less seriously. Gameplay in the Day and Night were both fun. Eggmanland was just incredbile. Best Sonic Level since Sonic Adventure 2's Radical Highway.
Bad: Too easy, Knuckles could replace Werehog gameplay.

2:Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Favorite Character: Knuckles
Favorite Stage: Sandopolis
Good: Best graphics on the genesis, Long, just right difficulty, Super emeralds, best debug mode in a Sonic Game.
Bad: Glitchy debug at certain areas.

1:Sonic CD
Favortie Character: Sonic
Favorite Stage: All of them!
Good:If you look to the following direction:
<----
This is my favorite Sonic game, and my third favorite video game. The level design is incredible, special stages were unique for it's time, and it was the fastest game out there.
Bad: Long, confusing to 100% beat at first.

FAV:

Game: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
No, it's not the best Sonic game. It's not the best RPG, and it's not the best DS game. However, it's a very good all of the above. I happen to be a big fan of turn-based roleplaying games (aside from FF; don't ask me why) and Chronicles just did excellently with bringing a series that's based entirely on action and speed and turned it into a strategic, story-heavy puzzler. Not only that, but the music ain't bad half the time, the story is exciting, and, BioWare's specialty, has some fantastic characters. All of them are deep and lovable, even the game's original Shade. I'm the sort of person who loves getting 'sucked in' when playing a game, so Chronicles was an unexpected dream come true.

Char: Tails
I love characters that I can identify with. In a world of supersonic hedgehogs, flaming cats, egocentric echidnas and spherical megalomaniacs, an unlikely anchor in reality for the series ever since his very first voice actor is a two-tailed young fox. He's very intelligent, but he doesn't have a real attitude, or a strange way of speaking; his prodigy isn't even unrealistic. He's humble as well as talented, and is always optimistic and doesn't try to put up a front with his friends. Additionally, I could draw all sorts of similarities between his backstory and my own life but I don't want to bore anyone. Needless to say, Tails is the sort of character that every franchise needs, that connection to reality, but very few establish properly. He's something Sega continues to do right, although I would like to see a little more from him in games to come...he was excellent in Chronicles, and I'd like to see that become a trend.

Stage: God, I dunno...Tails' Windy Valley in Sonic Adventure, I guess.
Tough for me to pick a favorite stage, because I'm not so gameplay-oriented as my interest in a series built around speed and button-mashing might suggest. I did like Windy Valley, though; racing (and beating!) Sonic as Tails for the first time was pretty thrilling, and the level itself looked great and I think did an excellent job of introducing Tails into the world of 3D platforming. A perfect meld between speed and strategy, finding shortcuts that give you an edge over your quicker rival, and buzzing along invisible trails of wind caught me off-guard several times when I first played. This is how you do it, Sega!

WORST:

Game: Sonic Blast
I may change my mind once I get the guts to try Labyrinth, but for now, off the top of my head, it's gotta be Blast. You can say what you like about Drift and R; yeah, they sucked, but they were playable. Say what you like about the latest console games, too...I haven't played them, but I've seen vids, and they're not as bad as this MasterSystem game. For one thing, it's slow. It doesn't mean to be, which makes it even worse; it just tries too hard to bring 3D graphics to the system (which they also failed at). For another, the level designs are horrible; Blue Marine is bloody retarded, with glitches all over the place that keep you from pressing certain buttons in certain areas (no running and jumping for you!). Finally, Tails isn't playable. What the fudge. Well, I suppose that's ONE good thing about the game: it didn't drag my fav char down with it.

Char: The one-shots from Fleetway's comics.
A while back, I would have said Shadow. That was before he was redeemed in my eyes in Archie's Sonic Universe series (in which he's more deep and original, and even amusing...seems almost believable). I don't mind Cream; there's more to life than fighting, and she seems to represent that. She could do it better, but we don't see much of her. Big's fine, too: he's dumb, and his SA levels sucked, but he cracked me up several times through my Chronicles playthroughs ("Anyone have any other ideas?" "Get Big some ice cream!" "..."). But recently I read a few Sonic the Comics and almost got a concussion from the number of headdesks I was forced to perform. The characters in there are just...bad. The scripts sound like they were translated from Japanese by SA's team, the art is abysmal, and the plots that they bring with them are just ridiculous. Even the characters that are on our side, that we're supposed to like, make me want to slap the stupid out of them. tl;dr: they're shallow, unlikable, ugly, useless, and thank God we'll never see them again. But Tails did have an awesome coat. Someone get me that coat.

Stage: Carnival Night Zone (Sonic 3)
I already whined about Blast, so I won't whine more about the zones from it I hated. So, I'll pick on a zone that's in an otherwise good game...well, OK, it's not a bad zone, it just pisses the hell out of me. For one, there are very few enemies. The enemies that are there can generally be avoided by either spinning in place (wut) or walking onto them (...wut...). There are a ton of bouncy things that seem to get in your way at the most unlikely of times, and to add insult to injury, they give you points. wut. Thirdly, the second act is excruciatingly long. You're more likely to die by running out of time than you are by getting smooshed or stabbed or touching one of the harmless-looking baddies of this level. Along with that, the boss seems to go with that strategy, taking a long time, only opening up for a couple hits MAX every fifteen seconds or so, and only hitting you if you pass out from boredom and drop your controller. Finally...the music. The Genesis isn't known for its music, but this isn't just a matter of hardware, it's a matter of obnoxious carnival themes that get in your head and make you want to kill yourself - in real life, because it's impossible in the game; you simply cannot die in Carnival Night Zone. It's awful.

EDIT: Just read the OP again, and I think I did it wrong. Dammit.

. . .

Aww Eighteen don't worry - even if you did make a mistake, I still loves ya! ;)

Number 1
Game: Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Favourite Character: Dr. Robotnik (if I need to pick a good guy Tails).
Favourite Stage: Oil Ocean! <3 I also like Hill Top Zone and Mystic Caves
Least Favourite Stage: Metropolis
What was so good/bad about it: I love Oil Ocean because of the music mainly, it is also a good fun level to play even if the flying sea horses are really freaky. The levels were enjoyable and some were challenging. I did not enjoy Metropolis because of everything just having a totally evil streak and being positioned in really evil ways so it was hard to get through the level with over 50 rings. Plus there were THREE levels to it. As if two weren't bad enough! The music was great and rarely annoyed me and it was just so much fun racing through levels and then getting to do the trippy bonus stages! FUNSIES!

Number 2
Game: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
Favourite Character: Doctor Robotnik and Tails
Least Favourite Character: Shadow
Least Favourite Stage: The one with the big Ice-type guys (because if I tried to swap my inventory around it would crash my game).
What was so good/bad about it: You actually have a lot of good jokes, lovely loyalty to SatAM, Robotnik is witty and yet so darn lovable with his evil streak; as Eighteen said they have taken a game all about speed to make it more about strategy. I loved how all the character interacted and it seemed natural and was amusing.
The only complaint was some of the music (not all) could get on your nerves after a long time and the sound effects were sloppy - Shadow was a turkey? WTF?

Number 3
Game: Sonic CD
Favourite Character: Metal Sonic
Favourite Stage: Palmtree Panic
Least Favourite Stage: Wacky Workbench
What was so good/bad about it: It has time travel which makes me think of the Dolorian which automatically makes me happy. The music was extremely catchy, the cut scenes at the start and end were fantastic and the game was addictive trying to get all the different endings.

Wacky Workbench was a completely EVIL level that took me far too long to complete and gave me a migraine, the rest of the game was great and challenging though. So I don't have much to complain about.

I also don't really have three games I dislike, the only one I'd mention is Sonic Unleashed and that is just because it was a disappointment and not what I expected.
