As for me, definitely Jak II. The game is unforgiving in just about every sense of the word - especially the time limit missions. Though, after beating this, Jak 3 and Jak X were a breeze to beat.

Perhaps Gears Of War 2 on Insane. It wasn't really that hard, but it had some frustrating moments, and it's impossible to do without multiplayering it.

I object to your claims
The original Yoshi's Island. It took me three years to beat the last boss on World 3. Nowadays though, I find that a game a breeze to beat.

Now, count up you crimes!
I haven't really played all to many games, but for me, It'd have to be Jak 3. It was the first in the Jak series I played, so, as Blues said, it was very unforgiving (for me it was the driving parts, as at the time I was both a horrible driver and shooter XD). But, also as he said, It made the other two installments a breeze to beat.

Also, I'd have to say Halo 3 on Legendary.

I actually find the Jak games easy to beat.

For me, it'd have to be Final Fantasy Tactics. I would say Legend of Dragoon but I still can't beat that.

Flying Battery Act 2
How about...Jurassic Park on the NES? It's split up into six stages. In general, the goal is to collect all the eggs in every area. When you get the last one you get a keycard that unlocks a door to the next area. Although there are a few bits where you do other things, like planting time bombs in raptor nests or going river rafting while avoiding Dilophosaurus spit.

You get three lives per continue, and four continues, in addition to any extra lives/continues you acquire along the way. Sounds like a lot of lives, but you can only take three or four hits before you die. This is three or four hits from everything...from environmental hazards to raptors to the tiny, hard-to-shoot compys that are hard to hit. Ironically you die more from compys than raptors, since the compys are difficult to shoot and they're everywhere. And you have to start over the stage if you continue. There are no checkpoints and the levels are quite long. Which means continues will not save you if you can't make it through the stage in roughly three lives.

In addition to this...all of the items are in "?" boxes. And half of these boxes will explode and hurt you or just outright kill you. There is no way to tell them apart from the good boxes that contain powerups, unless you play through the game multiple times and memorize which ones are good and which ones are bad (I ended up drawing a map showing what was in every box). But if you don't have this information, you're actually better off just not trying to get powerups at all. This has to be the only game I know of where intentionally avoiding power up boxes is a great strategy. But without powerups the ride will be much harder for you.

On top of this, dinosaurs are spawning all around you at all times. If you get lost (and you will) you will have to keep killing the same enemies as you go back and forth through the same areas. True, they each drop a little bit of ammo...but it's only the basic, weakest ammo.

The first couple levels aren't so bad, but the later ones seem custom-designed to piss you off.

The first example would be Level 3, where you need to turn on eight computers in the Visitors Center in a certain order. The only way to learn the order is by trial and error. Which means you will be running back and forth all over the damn building trying to get the order right while dinosaurs literally come out of the walls and swarm you at every turn.

On Level 5 you go to a cargo ship to use a radio. But first you have to navigate several rooms full of electric nodes and electrified floors. It's infuriating enough trying to navigate all this shit without getting shocked, but the dinosaurs that are running around are invincible to the electricity. You will waste many continues if you get this far.

Then in the final stage, Level 6, you must get through the biggest building in the game...which has multiple floors and rooftops you must explore to get every last egg. Once again, you will get lost multiple times and dinosaurs will be swarming you constantly. Then you need to run through a raptor pen and collect more eggs...but now the eggs are hidden from view behind bushes. And while you're doing this raptors are swarming you...and the bushes that don't have eggs spawn more raptors that get cheap shots on you since you're right next to their spawn points.

Amazingly though, when you fight the T Rex, he's super easy to beat if you know his weakness. Just watch this video. And since he's the final boss it's actually the easiest part of the final level. Incredibly ironic really.

I got this game in 1993, and it took me until 2008 before I finally mustered up the will to try and conquer it once and for all.
