Fancharacters are stupid, they're just silly recoloured sprites. In fact here's something from the old wiki:

I agree with the above post as far as recolors like purpl3 teh hedgehawg go. Just simply giving a character different colors on their body and giving them a different name does NOT count as a fan-character. That is just too damn lazy. I mean come on, is it really that hard to add extra features, like a badass jacket, some battle scars, make the shoes different, or at least add a simple mole below the eye? |

I don't think fancharacters are pointless. In roleplays, for example, you might want to do something Sonic-styled, so why make your character a human when it can be an anthropomorphic animal? Of course, some people as unoriginal as to recolor characters. In some cases, they claim that they simply don't know how to make their own characters, but when you have the right words, you don't need pictures; just describe them verbally. Making love interests or children for canons is rather unoriginal. I remembered seeing this when I was fairly new to forums so I decided to do the same and invent 'children' for canon characters and even my first fanfic here was like that. But as I stayed here and read others works and such, I realized how unnecessary and lame it was so I scrapped all those fancharacters, not that I ever used them for anything outside that fanfic, and should there have been actual canon children to certain pairings, I would've gladly used them. I guess I was just trying to make up characters for the ones I wanted for my story but that didn't existed. XP Still doesn't make the situation all that better, though. As I started RPing, I decided to do my own original characters and while trying, I liked it. It was like adding a personal touch to the stories, or trying to do something Sonic-oriented without having to rely on characters that belonged and were copyrighted to SEGA. This also prevents the canon character's personas from being altered by the fandom because the fans have their own characters to give any kind of personality they want to. What I don't get is people who make fancharacters because they think it betters the canon ones or because they think their fancharacters could actually be on SEGA. Fancharacters are just so you don't mess up canon character's entities on roleplays and fanfictions and/or make up characters that fit in those worlds and universes while allowing one to show their imagination. But no matter how good or bad a fancharacter is, none of them should ever be in games, comics or shows. They're just for fun and creativity; nothing more, nothing else. |
