(I'm not Exactly sure where this should go so I'll put this here. if it is in the wrong place please politely tell me. Also, politely , if you are a staff member who can move topics move mine to the appropriate forum.)

I recently went surfing the web looking at stuff about sonic...noticing the many Fans and.....Non-fans of sonic then it came up: Sonic Fan characters are pointless. I'm sure there may be a good number of people who dislike fan characters here I'd like to discuss this subject and your views on this.

I really think you should be allowed your own fancharacter. I mean, a lot of things in life are pointless, and we still do them, don't we? So long as it's not a recolour, it's absolutely fine by me.

I do have one problem with fan characters. Well, make that two.

1) 90% of the fancharacters have got such an EXCITING* story that I can fall asleep in less than 0.0093 seconds after starting reading it.
2) It's not Sonic fan characters. Moarlike using a template for the fan characters. The same authors, most of the time wouldn't be able to explain their character outside of the Sonic universe. It's like a person without legs and arms, but with a mechanical help. Take away that and...

*Mortally boring

Have to agree, as long as it's not a recolor. (Or if it is... its bio should wow the masses! I.E. be very good)

The thing is though... this isn't the only fandom that makes fan characters. If it's just some singling out effect I have to ask: So are "DBZ fan characters pointless?" "Avatar FCs?" how about some of the other shows out there that have a fandom that makes FCs? If it's only the Sonic fandom they're pointing the finger at; "is it because there's recolors?" they've obviously never bothered to explore other fandom then. Other fandoms out there have recolors and mary-sues too, no fandom is perfect.

I have no problem with fan characters. They're just another thing on the list for creative outlet. Maybe not as spectacular as thinking up your own story (because you are basing things on something that's already been made), but it's still creative.

Least not a HORRIBLE recolor. I mean, look at Metallix. He (or she) changes body parts of his characters, and they still look exactly like the original. And his first fan-character, Puncture the Porcupine, had the body parts of the differents official characters.

I hardly think fan characters are pointless, they can add many interesting elements to a fanfic. If you remained completely canon on a fandom all the time, there's only so much you could do with it while staying in canon with the original. Add a fancharacter or two, though, and you have new villains, new allies, new love interests...How well you develop them can also determine how good the story is. If you make a character that's a recolor or Mary-Sue, chances are nobody's going to read it. If you can make a believable character with a detailed background and realistic personality, however, the story would probably be something people would want to read!

I don't like fancharacters at all. There, I said it. I dunno...the vast majority just seem a lot like people inserting Mary-Sues into Sonic's world, or else, more or less, fursonas (often both). And I think the other reason I don't like them is that the franchise has enough bloody characters XD . The games usually balance each character's personalities well, and in fanfics or comics and such, when another character is added, especially one that's clearly non-canonical, it just sort of ruins that balance. Especially when people make up fan pairings...nrgh. Tails x Mina was obnoxious enough in 25 Years Later without people having their fan-character (see: avatar) mutually fall in love with one of Sega's.

RPing's a different story, obviously, since it's usually done outside the realms of the games, and rather than requiring a crappy image, it requires some thought put into both the plot and character development, although you still get some people and sites who just can't seem to handle the idea of creating a story rather than an autobiographical fantasy. Each unto his own, though, I suppose...I try to avoid light RPing, and don't bother doing anything more than raising my eyebrow at most fancharacters. It's just when they can't be avoided that they start to bug me.

I still can't use this.

Fancharacters are not pointless because they have specific purposes: participating in roleplays and stories within an established universe, acting as a catalyst for extra development and creativity that might render existing things in the universe as out-of-character, and being a person's avatar.

Personally, I'm neutral towards their existence. They're just such a basic and natural part of any fandom you're gonna run into that I can't bring myself to love or hate them on the whole. However, they are fun to create, especially if you know what you're doing with them and how to make them at least above average. I've got five myself and I think they're just right dandy on the whole. xD

I object to your claims
I don't have a problem with fancharacters, provided that they're original-No recolors, no Mary Sues, no self-inserts, etc. I also frown on characters that are made to be relatives or love interest of the offical cast. Another thing I don't like is when the creator puts vitually no detail in their character's creation. (The bios are extremly short)

But when a character is done right, they can provide an interesting element to fanfics and RPs. Plus, they're fun to create if you know how.

What is the difference between a duck?

People, creative or not... have the right to create whatever they want in whatever visage they want with any story peripherals (no matter how lame or otherwise they are) that they want. I created the characters I have for a few reasons, one because I like art and design and to create my own things, because I'm a fan of Sonic (non Sonic fans opinions on Sonic Fan Characters really is null), and simply because it is an interesting venture.

People should be allowed to do what they like character-wise without being bashed for it unless they are like a blatant re-color claiming to be original.. and even then I don't really care. I just go about my own business.

It is creativity at work people, some are good with it and some aren't, but all can be allowed to use it virtually unhindered. So yes.. there is definitely a point to them as, in the very least, expressions.

I personally don't like the idea of fancharacters - but I'd never say no-one should create them, even they are just a retarded recolour...

I have no problem with fan characters, and I don’t think they’re pointless. But some of them are just plain boring and poorly done. They can be creative if the creator does a good job with the story and the design. I’ve seen often enough that characters had a boring story and a lack of a good design. I mean, at least try to original…
But fan characters are a part of a fandom, so yeah.

I only times I dislike Sonic fan-characters is if:

  • they aren't interesting
  • their dumb recolors
  • the claims about being equal (if not BETTER) than cannon characters
  • the assumption for a cannon love grouping (for example: son/daughter of SonicxAmy, TailsxCream)
  • elemental adepts (they must pass a certain test)
  • etc.

The list can go one, but for now lets just keep it at that.

I do like fan-characters, as I've got like 110+ pages of 50+ fan-characters. It's just hard to grasp the ideas of others.
