The Tornado in FSX; Doing some repainting, need images.

Yeah, I found a nice open cockpit biplane that looks very similar to the Tornado, or at least one of its incarnations (the Magic One Travel Air, if anyone's interested, although I'm thinking about doing the Fokker CV-M26 as well...still not sure) and I'm looking at retexturing it so that it looks like the Tornado. Yeah, I know, I'm cool...thing is, there are images that I need in order to do so. I'll show you guys an image of the incarnation I want to emulate, so you'll see what I mean:

I could do the older one from Sonic 3, and it'd actually be easier, but I'm quite the Tails fan; if I knew how, and had the skill, I'd muck with the model itself to insert a little orange fox into the cockpit. Maybe someday. But for now, what I need, chiefly, are one or two things that I've yet to find: the double-tail icon that you see on the top wings and tail, and it'd also be great if someone could grab me the Sonic logo on the fuselage. Anything else, I should be able to do, given enough time...and then you people out there who have FSX (or even FS9, I do believe) can buzz around in your favorite fictional taildragger. I've yet to ask the creator of the model if I can do so, but I'm sure they won't mind (and if they do, I'll just have to be quiet about it, won't I? XD ).

So yeah. tl;dr: if you can get me those images, I can get you your favorite fantasy taildragger, albeit with a somewhat undernourished cockpit panel (it lacks such trivial things as a vertical speed indicator, but hey, it's vintage...I'll mess with that next). Any help would be very much appreciated, and anyone who can provide me with at least the double-tail icon, fairly large, good quality, will be my hero for the day. Thanks!

You'll need PVM edit and Sonic Adventure DX on your computer.

*glomps Snooky* I'll get to work right away! Hope these are large enough...I hate trying to touch up images.

PVMedit, eh? Might look into that, 'cuz I do have SA_DX. Thanks, Snooky! I'll update this thread with a ZIP once I get the textures done.

But I'm a better glomper than cookie-baker.

Anyway, I'm really wishing I knew how to model, because little differences in the scale are bugging me a little bit. The fuselage is a little more realistic than the stumpy one you see on that pic up there. The elevators and rudder are a different shape than the Tornado I want to emulate, and this plane only has two propeller blades and no gear covers. And it's a two-seater (which I actually like...it always bugged the hell out of me that Sonic balanced, standing on the back end of the ridiculously small plane while Tails performed all sorts of Wilfred May-esque combat maneuvers. However, the Travel Air's wings are perfect; it's even got a windshield, and the overall look and feel is a lot like what I think the Tornado would be like if it existed outside of the video game realm.

Anyway, I've got the SONIC logo on, which was the hardest part...lots of resizing, had to set an alpha channel, and yes, I did have to touch it up a lot. And with that, I've got the main reference point for the rest of the little designs and clunky parts on the Tornado. The toughest part I've yet to do will probably be that gray line that traverses the fuselage...not sure how I'll do that without a tablet. Maybe I'll wing it in Paint or something, and if all else fails I can ask someone here to whip up something similar for me.

No love for us out there in FS95, FS98, FS2000 and FS2002-land? D: XD I'll have to buy FSX (and a joystick) somewhere sometime.

Heh, maybe it can be rigged to do the aircraft carrier mission from Acceleration.

Hey, Anim8or is pretty free and easy to use 3D Program. That + the eggplant tutorial should give ya ll you need to tweak the model. xD

=3 Good luck

Sorry for my ridiculously long posts all the time! 8P

Hmm, I'll look into that. Thanks, Densha.

You can try it, Cy-Fox, but I'm not making any guarantees. I'm fairly sure it works in 2004; if 2002 uses similar cfg and air files, and uses 32-bit BMPs for textures, that might work OK. Still, it's pretty possible that it can't take the level of sophistication, so yeah, you should grab FSX sometime. It's much better anyway :P .

Use Wings3D, it is FAR better than Anim8or. Far better.
And uhh, what the hell is FSX?

Flight Simulator X. It's only been out for two years, guys, c'mon XD . I'll see what I can do with modeling.

EDIT: Hrm, none of these programs import MDLs...I found just one that might export them, but I don't know if it's the MDL I want (there are like eighteen different kinds, and FSX's models are very different from Quake's, Neverwinter Nights, etc.) and at any rate, I've never modeled before and don't want to screw this up too bad. And according to one help forum I came across, importing FSX MDLs is actually impossible due to copyright issues. So...maybe someday I'll try creating the Tornado from scratch, but for now, you guys'll have to be cool with a Travel Air skin.

And here it is. Apologies to fans of the prop + massive freaking rocket combo, as I wasn't able to install a jet engine at the bottom of the craft. Also apologies to people who didn't want the second seat: 1) I couldn't import the MDL, and 2) I like it, so too bloody bad. Finally, apologies to people who are OCD over colors like I am, as there was a fleck of yellow near the back I just could not get rid of no matter how hard I tried. Stupid modeler. Anyway, SB, I give you, The Tornado. I made it sexier, I made it faster, and I added a few extra things in there that'll hopefully have someone grinning.

-The plane I chose has a banner it can drag behind it, apparently, which I changed to the Sega logo. The switch is...somewhere on the right-hand side of the cockpit.
-Tails' license for the Tornado is on the left-hand side :P . Made it up myself in a few minutes, thought it was cute. Not terribly accurate in terms of what licenses actually look like, but yeah. I laughed in spite of myself at the thought of the Tornado being registered.
-Polished up the cockpit. Now, even though I couldn't get it to look like the futuristic Japanese-style control panel you see in OVA and such, it doesn't look like a rusted hunk of crap.
-The paint itself sort of went from a remake of the Tornado to my own vision of the plane. It still looks a lot like the pic, but it's a bit more streamlined, a bit more realistic-looking. I also kept the wings made of fabric, because fabric is sexy.
-Added a GPS and autopilot, because the idea of Tails being caught without a precise navigation system is laughable. The autopilot is there if you want it.
-Sped the plane up so it can take off almost on a dime like the Tornado can.
-Probably one or two other little things I can't remember offhand.

Without further adieu, here it is: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jcdojkgjmyg
Just extract that to your Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes folder, and you're good to go. The Tornado should show up in your hangar. Sometime today I may also try to take a video, or at least some snapshots, of the Tornado in action.

Yeah, a video wasn't really possible...framerate was awful. So you'll just have to try it out on your own :P . Here are some screenshots:

Spoiler: click to toggle

Also, if you're wondering where in the world these shots were taken...right in my backyard :P . Calgary, Alberta. I wish I could have taken a video to both show off the mountains here, and also to show off the great acceleration I plugged into this baby, but...ah well. Like I said, you can see for yourself if you have FSX or (probably) FS9.

EDIT: Also, found the switch for the banner (I think) but the texture isn't working. Doesn't for the original, either, so I'm going to blame this on the modelers.
