The turning point for the Sonic franchise?

Good to be back
Unless you've been under a rock for a while, you'll know that the Sonic franchise has had a bit of a "gaming slump" over a period of time. However, my question is: When do you think was the turning point for Sonic games in 3D?

If you want my opinion, I honestly think they managed to begin understanding Sonic's speed potential in Sonic and the Secret Rings. It is not my favourite Sonic game, but how Sonic Team managed to keep the fun platforming, but also add some insane turning and speed. (however, they never FULLY realised the potential untill Unleashed. :D ) Thoughts?

The 3d Sonic franchise has a turning point? O_O The last time I checked, all recent Sonic games but Sonic Chronicles have been bashed by the critics. And I kind of disliked the recent Sonic console games too.

I don't think the Sonic console games had a turning point yet but obviously, I am hoping for one soon.

I enjoyed every single Sonic game I've played, so I can't really say for myself. :)
I have an interest in spriting. If anyone has a request, don't hesitate to ask.

Sonic had a turning point at Sonic Adventure 2, in my opinion. Not a good turning point, mind ;) . Sonic Adventure was good, but Adventure 2 just seems...I dunno, I can't get into it. I've never been at a loss for words when it comes to why I don't like a game; it just seems stale and overly structured. I'll agree with Banana that the franchise, or at least the 3D bit hasn't recovered, as people are still waiting for Sega to fulfill their promise that this enigmatic Next Game will be the one that revives the series. And that Sonic Chronicles was pretty epic. Plus one internet, my friend.

Critics tend to reflect pretty well on a game's quality, at least compilations like Metacritic. And he did state his own opinion: he dislikes recent Sonic console games.

What is the difference between a duck?

People like talking about opinions on things lately it seems. ^^

Turning point... if you go by the critics reviews (which you shouldn't if you have a brain) there has been no real turning point except for a downward spiral since the Sonic Adventure series.. if you ask me it's kinda like a high.. or growing too fast. Adventure and Adventure 2 burned literally ALL of the great ideas that SEGA could think of for years and did so early, it made them both pretty damn good but all of the ones to subsequently follow had so much less to work off of because of it. The franchise took advantage of their 3D ideas and burned them away.

Slowly but surely we've seen a critic review rise since then but we cannot deny that, by rating, this franchise has never been much lower than the bowels that ShadowTH and Sonic06 took us into.

When it comes to my individual opinion, yes the Adventure games are still the 3D high for Sonic. But I'm not nearly as critical on 06 as reviewers and I'm arguably more critical on Shadow.. simply because first of all it was a game that should have never existed... they ruined a good semi-powerful ending to SA2 by bringing him back to life.. which is also an overused concept. The gameplay sucked, the story went nowhere, and it was really just a slopartistic achievement of junk. I saw someone say that 06 should burn in hell, I beg to differ, it at least did a decent job of bordering making sense and had a good story.. Shadow.. I just burned that game in my backyard.. with real fire.. not word fire.

If you want a positive turning point.. that is easily Unleashed, because with it SEGA was able to get SOME momentum going both with their fans and critically.. baby steps people. If they can keep riding it up and keep getting at least a little better game by game without throwing every last damn idea into one game to hope it turns out amazing only for 10 more years of pitfall, they will be a much more solid and legitimate franchise to not only their fans at large (since I see people losing hope left and right) but with the reviewers that so many industry mind puppets choose to listen to.

I believe after Sonic Unleashed and Black Knight we finally reached a turning point. At this point, I think people are starting to get the reviewers are unreliable now and more people are actually trying the games then being biased to it.

As for reviewers, they will likly keep bashing sonic games just to gain viewers and such. Once it comes clear bashing sonic is dead(Because seriously, how much longer can you go on about it?), we may see game reviewers who actually TRY to write a good review on a sonic game, and maybe other series in general.

Reviewers don't bash Sonic to bash Sonic. Look at Rush and Rush Adventure, and Chronicles. They did fairly well (I believe the former two even got in the eighties on Metacritic), not bashed just because they contain a blue hedgehog.

Well, this would make sense, and I sure hope that you are right.

But most players can't make up their own damned mind and have to have someone do it for them, and I really hope that this generation in gaming will stop it.

I think things went south with Shadow. Sonic Heroes, although not a fan favorite, still got very good reviews on the GameCube versions with solid 8s.

Ha, The Tails Doll does not compare to my Eeveeness(TM)

I have to agree Neo, Up until Shadow the Hedgehog most of the 3D sonic games were enjoyable, but after that they went downhill until SatBKs came out, witch I found quite entertaining.

First of all, it's inhumane. Second: You really think it's inhumane to have a different opinion from everyone else? :\ Enough off-topicness.

I'm still saying the Secret Rings set the standard for Sonic games today. It should have had better controls, I'll give anyone that, but still... apart from that, it did well.
