Would the Sonic franchise have saturated years ago?

I've been reading stuff about Sonic fans wanting to go back to basics in the Sonic games, and it got me curious about something.

More clearly, let's say the Genesis-era Sonic formula didn't stop with Sonic CD or Knuckles Chaotix or whatever it stopped at, and Sonic Team continued the fornula throughout the Saturn era, the Dreamcast era, or even the PS2/GC/Xbox era or today's era, would he still have that 'iconic' status he would today?

Sonic The Hedgehog 1, of course, the classic everyone remembers set the foundations for the franchise in the Genesis era.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 added Tails and new moves like the spindash. Regardless of which, it was still essentially the same structure as Sonic The Hedgehog 1, as Tails' objectives were essentially the same as Sonic's despite his new abilities.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles added the ability to play as Knuckles, refer to the Tails case alongside the Super Emeralds, which was essentially an extension of the Chaos Emerald sidequest of previous games.

Sonic CD, even with the time travel mechanic, it was still effectively the same game. (Time Stones basically a Chaos Emerald quest under a new name)

So the question I ask is..if the formula was still continued even today, would Sonic still be popular, or would he have died from franchise fatigue?
"we'd lol u in an office". Yes, my dreams don't make sense at all. xD

Don't defy me or I will beat you senseless with a sack of doorknobs!
It probally would have been cut off as a series that never got the idea of 3-D graphics and plumeted to the ground because of a small fanbase.

I still can't use this.

The major question people need to ask when thinking about the answer to this hypothetical is if such an accurate adaptation of the Classic's game mechanics can even work in 3D.

The answer is probably no. Games that have successfully made the jump to 3D have usually had to radically change their formulas. Super Mario 64 does not play like Super Mario World. Metroid Prime does not play like Metroid. Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) does not play like Ninja Gaiden (NES).

Sonic Team has also gone on record to state that it isn't as workable as we believe, hence why you're never playing as Sonic the majority of the time in most of the new installments anymore. Ergo, had Sonic Team merely stuck to their guns, we'd be complaining about stagnation, two hour long games, and a gameplay style that still remains severely limiting in lieu of the true potential of 3D games rather than new ideas, more(less?) speed, or too many characters. xP

In all truth and honesty, I think we wouldn't be having any trouble at all if Heroes never got made. Heroes kinda started the downhill plummet if you think about it.

Nope, not really, Heroes was AWESOME. The only problem with it is that you HAD to switch between members and HAD to beat all team storylines.

Everything else was fine.

Sonic X is what got SEGA too confident and to start making more games with humans and other stuff.

Plus, BS is right. XD ... BS... XD
Currently voicing Chris for SegaBridged's upcoming Sonic X Abridged series. Super stoked. Lots of talent in this group.

You should be asking this to Mario before Sonic is even touched. Mario Party 8, enough said.

I think Sonic should go back to basics, but not completely. Add some new twists to modernize.

That is where you are wrong. Heroes ENDED the plethora of what was decent Sonic games. Only AFTER Heroes did the failures start.

I was greatly disappointed in Heroes. I bought it, having not played a new Sonic game since 2001, expecting great things out of it. But great things were not to be had. It was terribly mediocre.
By going downhill, I mean each game decreased in quality. I'm not saying this game is bad, I'm saying this is when they started decreasing in quality.

Sorry, I apologize. I said you were wrong, but an opinion can't really e wrong. My bad there.

I for one liked Heroes. But I completely agree Sonic went downhill from there. Sonic Unleashed could be considered an update, but it is still missing some success the previous Heroes games have shown.

Actually, people believe it was Sonic 2 or even the Adventures games why sonic is in downfall. Heroes is often the scape goat people use to blame on saying it sucks simply cause after it came Shadow and Sonic 06.

ANd truthally, yes, I think it would have unless they made it so that it would have new features. Look at Sonic Rush Adventures for example. They changed it up and added new cool features, to the point that Sonic Rush Adventure is among my list of HOly games(Games that I would gladly play a second time through).

It problably would survive IF Sonic team kept making new features and scuh for each game, because, face it, who wants to play the SAME.BLOODY.GAME.OVer and over again. The thing with classic fans is they Fountain of Youth they want for Sonic is a pipe dream, as it would only please themselves and would make alot of people angry at both them and the series. Eventually they themselves will get bored seeing only Sonic and Eggman and end up complaining about no new stuff for Sonic.

Actions speak louder than words.
I think people underestimate how much the 'fall' of the dreamcast had on Sonic. Wherever Sonic was using classic formulas or not, the fall that Sega took when the dreamcast died it effected Sega massively and if they had not been 'bought' Sonic and all other franchises would have either died and/or been sold to other companies. It has more to do the financial and economic factors than what direction they'd take the games in. It always has been and always will be.

I'm not using it as a scapegoat, I was truly disappointed in what I was playing, for numerous reasons I can go more into detail about if you really like...
But again, this is when they started losing quality.

The Sonic Franchise started going downhill when they came out with all these crappy ideas.
Sonic games with swords
Sonic games with werewolves
Sonic games with guns (Well Shadow game... but still.)

What ever happened to just a hedgehog running and beating up an old fat guy in 2D?
