That only exacerbates the situation by making you miserable, by making your relationship with Gage more awkward than it need be, and, should he discover it, by making him feel miserable for making you so miserable. After that, what you do depends entirely on him. Assuming you don't want to go out with him, (and if you do, why not give him and yourself a good time? A trip to the movies is not a quarter of the deal we make it out to be), then try to be the good friend you no doubt are naturally. If he accepts that, then the problem is solved. If he does not accept that, then just leave him alone like he wants until he's ready for a more mature solution. If that happens, then it becomes completely his problem; you did everything you could to maintain the relationship you were comfortable with, and he should not pressure you into anything more. Also, don't assume that he's sad because of you. Ask your friend what he said to him, and what Gage's reaction was. I have strep-throat at the moment, which isn't as bad as the flu, and I can tell you, that is enough to make anyone depressed. It just... just sucks, to put it crassly. If he won't talk to you, tell him that this is his choice, and that if he wants to talk, you're open, but you're not going to be miserable because of this. The ball is in his court. You can get on with your life without worrying that you're doing anything wrong.
