Epic Galaxy-Competing Mickey Game

I still can't use this.

I found this report highly interesting. With every high profile shooter coming out, that's one less platformer I'm going to get to play. They're definitely a dying breed, especially ones based on classic cartoon characters I used to pick up every chance I could get when younger. So imagine my surprise reading this report --

Quote:

Could Warren Spector's Junction Point Studios be at work on a title about Disney's seminal Mickey Mouse?

Gamasutra has seen concept art and information that indicates a title codenamed "Epic Mickey" may be in development at the Austin-based, Disney-owned developer.

Concept art from early versions of the game that we viewed showed mockups of the potential game's environment, including pencil sketches of cities assembled from junk.

Another sketch included a surreal seashore invasion scene, in which machines wearing the faces of the Seven Dwarfs deposit old-fashioned renditions of Disney characters onto the beach with mechanical hands.

Though the kooky environmental concepts, with visible large cogs, gears and even a large fork that serves as a building's awning, are somewhat reminiscent of Disney's Toontown Online MMO, the images -- particularly the cloud-stained seaside painting -- have a distinctly shadowed, steampunk vibe.

This information ties up with an early 2008 report from EGM Magazine columnist Quartermann that noted: "Word is that Spector's new Disney project will be a platformer looking to compete with a certain pesky plumber. And who's big enough to take on Nintendo's star? Only the mouse himself!"

Providing more background, this summer, Spector mentioned on his own Junction Point weblog: "My team and I have been working hard on our own and (get ready for the cool factor to go way up) in collaboration with folks from Disney Feature Animation and Pixar."

Junction Point itself is wholly owned by Disney since its acquisition in 2007, giving it the potential to use leading in-house IP in its games, including that of Mickey Mouse.

Deus Ex co-creator Spector has never provided further information on his current project. But around the same time as the summer's weblog comments, Spector noted at the Game Education Summit that "one hundred hour games are on the way out", and that he was "so tired of making games about guys in black leather carrying guns."

However, it's unclear whether the style of the concept art or the game's working title will fully carry through to this Junction Point project's conclusion -- or, indeed, exactly how far into development it is. Gamasutra will update with more information as it becomes available.
The fangirl in me would love something like this to emerge from a respected developer, especially since it would at least help curb my shame at those cheaply made movie-based games they keep cranking out. Disney and all of its studios seem to be back on a fast track to quality and this could be the start of something. Thoughts?

Ugh, the gaming industry must milk everything... Kingdom Hearts is as close as I want to get to an "epic" Mickey game. That's not saying much.

Mickey Mouse? Interesting......

I am also, indeed, a Disney fan. Although I find past Mickey Mouse video games a bit too kiddish. But who knows? Will probably try it if it's true.

Well, MM is designed for a younger audience. I'd like to see an attempt at making a T-rated Disney game (unless KH was T. Was it?).

Huge bump? You bet your Mickey Mouse socks, it is. But it's worthy enough to post this kick-ass artwork that is supposedly from the game--

Dilapidated Disneyland attractions? Steampunk Goofy and Country Bears? Dwarf robots dumping/kidnapping old school Disney fill-ins in a beach invasion?! I don't know about the rest of you, but this game is only looking more and more awesome. I want this platformer, and I want it now. Let's just hope the corporate fat cats at Disney doesn't nerf the whole thing because they want to "preserve the brand" like they did with Kingdom Hearts (No Goofy with a chainsaw. Boo!).

Disneyland? Not just Disneyland, Bliz. I'm pretty sure they don't have Spaceship Earth at Disneyland.
Ho-oly craaaaaap... Is that an island they stuck the Earffel Tower and SE on... or a freakin' NARWHAL!?

I want to hear more about this as it comes to light.
Indeed, there is nothing more repulsive than these monsters that defy nature and are known by the name of witcher, as they are the offspring of foul sorcery and witchcraft. They are unscrupulous scoundrels without conscience and virtue, veritable creatures from hell capable only of taking lives. They have no place amongst decent and honest folk.

Ordinarily I don't like the Disney games(mostly because 90% of them that aren't Kingdom Hearts are movie-based, and Kingdom Hearts was only for Playstation, which I do not have), but I have to admit this REALLY looks interesting.

Can't wait for more information, looks like it could be great fun.

Whoa....

Looking at the screenshots Bliz posted, I have to say that I am really impressed by this game. I mean, if these screenshots/drawings/whatever are based on the levels and enemies, then this game looks like it's real creative with originality. Of course, it's Disney so that's not a surprise but if the graphics are going to be as good as the pictures Bliz posted and not to mention the gameplay of course then this looks like it could be a very good game.

So now Disney's not even pretending they're not bringing the nightmare fuel anymore. I think I'm epicly stoked for this game.

When I was showed these screenshots for this game, and also saw it was for a disney game, man was I surprised. Disney are the people that bring you all these cutesy kid friendly games and movies, yet you have something here that looked rather evil and a bit demented. That's really shocking.
I'm a gamer and always will be a gamer. If you don't believe me. I have 430 Video Games and 19 Consoles.

I doubt you could beat that unless you are a gamer as well! =P

So, let's see if you can outdo "The Jet Gamer"

When a day in the happiest place in the world turns belly side up...

You get this.

Honestly. This was very unexpected. Way to grow some cajones, Disney. I'll be looking forward to this.
