War on Aidoor; takes place in an alternate demension

Angel Island Act 2
The cloak-clad hedgehog was silent for a moment, contemplating all that Target had told him. A three way war... that promised to make matters difficult, to be sure. The invaders didn't sound like anything to scoff at, either; though he'd done battle with some rather impressive beings over the years, few had the kind of agility described as belonging to the Elastikens. Nor did the Cronatones sound like pushovers... his opinions of the situation were growing more grim by the moment, it seemed. Powerful as his magic and abilities were he couldn't fight entire armies on his own -- his experience at the Field of the Brothers several years ago had taught him that much. That and other dark musings populated his thoughts as he replied to Targ.

"Yes, they do say that... yet by the same logic one could argue that the Cronatones and Elastikens ought to be allies. Unless, of course, they're more concerned with fighting to prevent the other from taking Aidoor first." He paused for a moment, a thought occurring to him. "Or..." He checked himself, realizing that he was probably assuming too much. "If it's alright to ask, why Aidoor?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Asheroth looked at the projected image for several moments. It was a curious design, this Halobin vessel... although not nearly as interesting as the information Sigma had divulged to her. Yes... most interesting indeed.

"What if I told you, Lord Sigma," The cyborg queen turned to meet his gaze. "That I can cause your enemies - even, perhaps, the Halobins - to serve your purposes? That it may even be possible to make this Lord Magnius a slave to your designs?" She turned and began striding back towards her Trireme, one of the two drones walking forward to meet her.

"Of course, these are bold claims on my part, yet claims I make with a fair measure of certainty." The Synstress assured him. The drone stopped walking as if by a silent command and Asheroth began pacing slow, deliberate circles around it. "These drones, you see, do not fill our ranks due to choice or free will - our technology is such that such things are completely denied, subjugated to the Hive Mind and my own will. In truth, many of my drones were once individuals who resisted us... who, given the choice, would rather have killed themselves than submitted. I imagine your adversaries are much the same..." Her pupil-less eyes looked towards Sigma. "Now, imagine them subdued mind and body; the very races whose soldiers who have slain your followers being made to turn upon their fellows, not hesitating to die for your cause. This my forces can do for you; I will order that all assimilated enemies obey your commands."

"Of course, a person as powerful as this Magnius may be problematic. Our methods for enslaving our foes are almost universally successful... yet beings with power on the scale you suggest are often far more resilient. Still, it may not be entirely out of reach. If I gather my ships to join yours, and we assimilate the knowledge held by those who imprisoned Magnius, we may discover a way to control him."

She took several steps back from the drone, which remained completely still. "By all means, though, test what I propose Lord Sigma. You no doubt wish to see for yourself if what I offer is true. This drone will obey your commands, so long as what you ask is possible. It will go so far as to tear its own arm off if you desire, or even self-destruct. Don't worry; I have many more that can replace it."

(OOC: Interesting stuff, Lunick. Can you give us some info on this Lord Magnius, or would that reveal too much? And how about the various races' spaceships?)

Taylor started to say something, but then shut his mouth and shook his head before speaking again. "You know, that's a very good question. Since, well, people like me shouldn't really get involved in something like this. But get involved, I do, usually. I'll probably wing it if and when the time comes." He tilted his head back and crossed his arms across his chest, muttering something about serendipity, the specifics of which were obscured by a sigh. Then he looked at Grave again. "Got any tidbits on those items they're after, or that something only your group's supposed to know?"

Looking at Specter, Targ stopped walking and said, "Aidoor itself is nothing special. Common crops. Although, our predators are nasty things that you'd never want to meet up with. I suppose if they were to be controlled that they could cause us some problems. But as for why they're invading Aidoor for real, here it is. This planet is the resting place of the Stone of Knowledge. This stone allows one to control the Glyphs of Destiny, powerful glyphs that hold the entire demension's history. By changing even a single glyph, you could destroy life as we know it.Also, there are ten jewels called the Force Gems. These are similar to the Chaos Emeralds, but there are more of them, and therefore more power."

"If you are wondering why I choose to tell you this so freely, it is simple. Not to scare you, but you have no where to go. Your in an unfamiliar demension AND planet. If you were to run away right now, we've gone to far into the tunnels for you to find your way back. Also, if you were to turn on me and somehow rat us out to the Cronatones or Elastikens, they would most likely kill you as soon as you told them what you know."

Thinking again, Sigma remembered the words of his teacher, "If you know your enemies, your allies, and yourself, you need not fear the outcome of a thousand battles."

Turning to Asheroth, he said, "It is a tempting offer, indeed. But there are several problems with your enslaving tactics. One, say you were to take over one of the Halobins. Halobins are masters of technolgy, and can understand any machine within seconds. They have a collective memory, similar to our own. Our special memories are our greatest advantage. If one of us wins a battle, all of the Cronatones would know exactly what happened and how to face a similar situation. There is only one way to prevent our collective memories from working, and that is to kill us. So if you took over a Halobin, that Halobin's knowledge of your machinery would be shared with every single Halobin in existance."

"Two. Even if we were to capture the sealers of Magnius, two of them would be too much for any machine to control. These two, Mithos and Dusk, aren't even truly living, as they are made from the being known as Black Doom's skin. Black Doom stored an enormous amount of energy in his body, and the very machine that made Mithos and Dusk wasn't strong enough to contain the power. Originally, they were both parts of a being known as "Maul". Somehow, Maul's conciousness, which was still inside a computer database at the time, managed to create a body for himself. If we could find him, he could force the information out of Mithos and Dusk."

"And three, Magnius himself. As I said before, he is powerful enough to destort time and space on his own, without the aid of any power source. When they sealed him away they forced a special armour onto his body. This armour includes a helmet, so no part of his body is uncovered. His armour is strong enough to withstand the force of a thousand nuclear bombs going off at once."

"The only way his armour can be removed is if Mithos or Dusk urge him to. And I highly doubt that they ever would.Even if you could control them and forced them to urge Magnius, it wouldn't actually be them saying it. If Magnius was to gain the power of the glyphs, as well as the Force Gems, then he could create an entire universe."

"But I do know one way we could defeat the Resisstance, the Halobins, and take over Magnius. The answer is simple." as he said this, he grinned a dark, evil smile. He then said, "All we have to do, Milady, is to make Magnius, Mithos, and Dusk into us. All we have to do is make them into Cronatones."

On the other side of the planet, the Halobin's mothership's captain was communicating with Bently. He looked up at the com screen and said, "So a Cronatone got near you guys, huh? Hmmm.... this is worse than I thought. Tact, get me a statistics check! Code 31295!" Hearing the order, Tact said, "Yes sir!" and began typing rapidly.

After several minutes of waiting, Tact handed the captain, Chief, a peice of paper. As Chief read it, he grimaced. "What is it, Chief?" asked Bently, who saw his worry. Turning to him, Chief said, "Bently, we have a MAXIMUM of 365 days until total conquest."

Reaching the planet, Grub activated his ship's hologram projector. Getting out, he sniffed the air. Smiling, he said, "Cronatones!" as he said this, he gave one long sniff, then set off towards the tunnels of the Resisstance.

Grave looked at Taylor with an unreadable expression. He said, "There's the Force Gems, which are capable of distorting time and space."

Thinking again, he said, "What the races are after for real are the glyphs and the stone. The Glyphs of Destiny have somehow recorded information from all across this demension. A complete history recording, down to how many times a ladybug beat it's wings."

"And then there's the Stone of Knowledge. The stone is the key to using the Glyphs of Destiny. By using it, you could alter what is written in the glyphs. By doing so, you could alter the laws of physics, or even destroy all life in the demension."

(OOC; Thanks Nascent. I've been going over the details of these races for afew months. I will post stuff about their ships in my List later. I'll reveal even MORE about Magnius as the story progresses.)

"Not quite understanding why anyone would want the Glyphs without the Stone, though..." Taylor said. "So altering the Glyphs would actually rewrite history, as in change what's already happened? Scary thought..." He mused silently for a little bit. "What if, say, somebody destroyed the Stone? No Stone, no tweaking history, right?"

Though Target's admission was somewhat unsettling, it was far from unexpected. Specter had, after all, known he was headed into a war zone.

"I assumed as much; you are at war, after all. I don't intend to resist, and if your cause is truly noble I have no qualms in helping you."

He spent a few quiet moments in thought, considering carefully the powerful relics Target had described to him. Runes that could manipulate history, gemstones of great power... given the presence of such items, suddenly his being sent to this world was beginning to make sense. At length he addressed Targ again. "You mentioned the Chaos Emeralds earlier; have your people traveled far in the multiverse? I only ask because I come from a dimension where the Emeralds existed..." His voice suddenly trailed off to almost a whisper, thoughts of his 'home' filling his mind. "... before it was destroyed."

"If these Glyphs of Destiny are as dangerous as you say, then I cannot allow them to fall into the wrong hands." Specter's eyes narrowed. "I will not allow your world, or any world, to meet the same fate as my own. This I swear."

Though disappointed, Asheroth stayed her hand. Experience had taught her to see out a situation for as long as she reasonably could, so long as even a hint of worthwhile opportunity remained. Thus she listened intently as Sigma explained the details surrounding the mythical Magnius, his seal-bearers, and the psychically endowed Halobin. His final statement, however, struck her as somewhat odd.

"Make them into Cronatones, Lord Sigma? Please, explain."

Almost to the city, Target says, "Yes, we've travled to three other planets located in different demensions. Mobius, Earth, and Anti-Mobius. How was your home destroyed, if you don't mind me asking."

Sigma smiled at Asheroth's question. He led her to the ship's main lab. "You see, ever since our war with the Halobins, our population count has dropped by horrific preportions. As we were scavaging the bodies of our fallen soldiers, we stumbled across a strange plant. This plant was the size of an elephant. As we watched it, which we felt compelled to do so, two small animals approached it. When the first one, a rabbit-like creature, touched it a bright light illuminated from the plant. Only seconds later the other one went underneath it. As it went underneath the plant, a similar light as the one before struck it. When the light disipated we were amazed. The second creature had turned into a perfect replica of the first."

Taking afew steps, Sigma signaled a scientist to go get something. He continued, saying, "We took them both to the ship and scanned them,as well as dissected them. We realized that they were both EXACTLY the same, right down to the last cell. Fasinated, we took as many of the plants as we could find onto our research ship. After several weeks we learned how to replicate the plant's strange powers."

as they walked he stepped up to a table covered with a cloth. Removing the cloth, a small laser, about the size of a throw pillow, sat there. Sigma picked it up and walked over to a table with several small creatures caged up. Pulling a hair from a small rabbit, he put the hair in a small chamber of the laser. Turning towards a lizard, he fired a shot at it. As the shot's light dissipated, the lizard turned into a perfect copy of the rabbit.

Grave's ears perked at Taylor's idea. "Hmm...... that could work! Taylor, you just might of won this war for us!"

(OOC: That really never occurred to you?)

Although it was Taylor's idea, he didn't think it would win the war, not like that. "For a spy, you're awful trusting," he commented. "Not to mention that there are too many unknowns for it to actually stop the war."

Even under the shadow of his cloak's hood, anyone who looked at Specter would have been able to see the sense of despairing rage that colored his face's expression. "That's just the thing, Target: I don't fully know how... I was gone, traveling the multiverse for several years in a blind search for purpose, before I returned. When I arrived..." The images of that broken space-time flashed across his mind's eye. "... there was nothing left but echoes. Echoes of a reality broken so suddenly that time literally washed back onto itself, leaving a phantom shell of what had been. A ghastly portrait is all that remains; I have no idea how it was done..."

He held up his hand, clenching it into a fist. "... but I do know who was responsible. She -- or rather 'it' -- left an echo behind as well. A massive cube-shaped vessel, filled with row after row of cyborgs... and, at the very center of it all, a technological demon from my past." He let his hand drop loosely to his side. "Targ, I pray that abomination never sets its sights on this universe. It's bad enough there are already two aggressors vying for control of this world's powers; were she to get her hands on such things, I doubt she'd hesitate to decimate whole swaths of universes to suit her purposes."

He sighed deeply, sorrow and fury mixed equally into the expression. "It's a... painful memory. I'm sorry to off-load on you like that, Target."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Though she was loathe to admit it, Asheroth was impressed. The Borg had occasionally run across species with limited forms of such form-replicating technology in their own universe, but it had all been fairly unwieldy and either required immense power output or ran the risk of unpredictable deviations. And to think that such an advanced device had been constructed based on plant life, of all things... She made certain to store away her sensor logs of the event very carefully; when she returned to her ship she'd set the Hive Mind to analyzing it.

"To achieve such a technology after only a matter of weeks... quite remarkable, Lord Sigma. The closest approximation I've seen to such an advancement took the species who created it decades, and even then it was far from perfect." She paused. "However, if the duplicate is, indeed, exactly the same as the original... does that not present a problem for your plan? What's to say that the power Magnius and the others possess - assuming it won't protect them from this effect - will be retained if they are changed into Cronatones? Even if it is, what if they can no longer control it? What, too, of their memories?"

Target looked at Specter and said, "Hey, don't worry about it. Who knows, maybe if we can find the glyphs we can bring back your world!"

Sigma somewhat absorbed the Syn leader's reaction and praise. He said, "Actually, it was quite simple. As you know, even though plants do technically live, they are much less complicated the animals or sentient species. Also, while we may not be as technalogically advanced as the Syn or Halobin, we have a greater understanding of living objects. In this way, we are your superior."

Upon hearing her concern, Sigma said, "This is also quite simple. We have also developed a special knock out beam that could peirce a nine-foot hole in this ship, front to back. Even with Magnius's armour, he wouldn't be able to stay concious. All we need to do is turn them temporarily into Cronatones, just long enough for me to take what I need to know from their memories. Then we can reseal Magnius back away before he regains conciousness, and we shove the others out of the airlock. I know it doesn't exactly sound foolproof, but I do have these!"

As he spoke, he flipped a switch. Upon flipping it, a section of the wall slid to the side, revealing a small chamber. Inside the chamber were three Chaos Emeralds. Smiling, he explained, "Several years ago I was sucked into a strange demensional portal. The portal dumped me out on planet Mobius, which is where I got these."

(OOC; it did, but its just a plot device)

Grave looked at Taylor and said, "Why shouldn't I trust you? Your in the Resisstance HQ and haven't even tried to escape, nor have you wronged me personally. Man! I need to get this to Bently, ASAP! Destroy the Stone, its so simple!"

"True enough, but most like me aren't as honest, either. And even those who don't have such major secrets hide something; everyone has something to hide," Taylor said. "As for the Stone, it's really just the beginning of a plan. But I feel like I'm missing something here... But there are two things that have to happen if you want it to end the war." Beneath that last statement was the sort of conviction only used when saying that there's no other possible way to do something.

"Perhaps..." He was quiet for a few minutes. "So, once we're in the city where do we go from there? I imagine you'll need to report my presence to your leaders."

"Your plan certainly has potential." Asheroth stated, glancing only briefly at the Chaos Emeralds. "Especially with such tools as you have at your disposal. We are willing to assist in your endeavors."

Target enters the city, Specter close behind him, says, "Welcome to Vinatoa!" as they look, Target points at the research facility and the military HQ. Signalling Specter, he said, "I'll need to take you to Bently and Seymour, the leaders of the Resisstance."

Sigma smiles and says to Asheroth, "Then, by the power invested in me by the great Council of Nine, hereby agree to a truce between the Cronatone Empire and the Syn Collective." as he talks he bows. As he bows, he says incredibly quietly, "For now!"

Grave devises an idea quickly. Turning to Taylor, he said, "Mr. Hiss, if you'll excuse me, i need to inform my leader of an idea!" as he said this, he jumps on the wall and runs off towards the Military HQ.

Entering the room, Clara says, "Well, mister Hiss. I guess you will be paying the bill then!"
