Lava Reef Act 2
|
Well, I just wanted to make a topic like this. Now, we all know about companies and rights associations talking about Software Piracy. Personally, I have a very... twisted view on the situation. For example, I keep my XBOX 360 by my dad, so I can play it only by him. I happen to have TES IV: Oblivion on it. I couldn't play it during days of the week. I didn't, but I think I had the right to download the PC version on my mum's computer. Also, at my advice, piracy is not "anti-capitalism". It's capitalism, in the purest form. Many game companies give demos of their games to us, and almost all times they contain the only good level in all the game. With downloaded files it's you who decides, since you actually have the whole game upon you. I don't know you guys, but when I download a videogame and don't get bored of it, I uninstall the game and buy it in the shop. That's because the actual videogame company has earned my money. With movies... eh... there are only three cases in which I download movies: 1) I am extremely pissed off at one of the guys who made the actual movie. 2) I don't have time in this period to go at the cinema. 3) I can't find it anywhere. If it's the third case, do I have the right to download it? Discuss. |

*cough* Pretends Ephy didn't offer him a link to spore torrent Copyright, illegal downloads. It's all definitely wrong, and we know it. It costs the fat cat's millions, out of the billions they keep for themselves. People are fined and even jailed for such acts. Its as bad a sealing from a shop. End off Now if you don't mind, I'm off to play my N64 emulator, whilst downloading music of limewire and youtube.

I think it's safe to say nearly everyone here has pirated something. It has a low risk factor and is just so convenient, especially when you have no income nor transportation of your own. Sure, 9 times out of 10 the quality sucks nickels but hey, you get what you pay for. xP But in regards to the morality of it, there's two sides to the issue. While piracy does hurt the industry because a Youtube download theoretically equates to one less CD sold, it is not necessarily killing it. And some of the prices of software are ridiculous anyways, forcing people to use an alternative if they want or even need to use the software in question. If industries are that intent on trying to regulate piracy, the easiest thing to do would probably not drop the book on the practice altogether (not that you could), but use it to their advantage as is slowly becoming the case with the numerous and relatively cheap download services available. Sometimes, they're even free as is IMDb's new movie function. Overall, it's somewhat of a grey area, hence why I've not lost any sleep over the numerous soundtracks I've obtained. |

Photoshop CS3 = £300, or well over $600 That, I can understand. I'm looking to take up a job in an area that involves using photoshop all the time. Now, £300 is pretty god damn unreasonable. How much does it cost adobe to make each disk. Oh so little. Now I'd like to ask, if they lowered the price, would they really suffer. No, cause they already make millions. I'm sure they could do with a few million less. |

Honestly I'm 100 percent guilty of this, but not exactly in a bad way. I have at least 10 gigabytes of emulators and roms, but they're all really old, and I really don't see the harm in downloading roms for systems that aren't even made anymore. |

Well, someone could argue you're stealing revenue from Nintendo and other participating companies by downloading ROMs online, instead of buying them on Virtual Console on the Wii. That's assuming you could get some of the games you downloaded illegally. Anyway, I used to download old Nintendo and Super Nintendo ROMs myself. But I don't need to anymore. It's not because I use Virtual Console. I have a chain of game stores near here called Game X Change that always keeps a big stock of NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. titles on hand. It's pretty cool. I can buy actual NES cartridges for less than what it would cost on Virtual Console. On top of that I absolutely hate using a keyboard instead of a proper controller and my TV. The only games I still emulate are old arcade games. Good arcades are already hard to find, let alone a specific arcade game you want to play (unless that happens to be a Time Crisis title).
Manufacturing the physical discs isn't where the big costs come from. With a product like a computer program, most of the money is tied up in paying the programmers who develop the software. Also, there's the money needed to market the software, the money needed to ship it to stores, the money for the stores' rent and its employees...I could go on and on for a while. This is also why brand new video games are $50-60, even though the actual discs probably cost next to nothing. Edited by Nail Strafer, Oct 30 2008, 04:54 PM.

What can I say? My alignment is Chaotic Good. ![]() What's the point of keeping an old console if you can sell it and use the money to buy a new one? All you have to do is download an emulator if you really liked the older games and BAM! Everyone wins. I personally only download GBA roms, videos off Youtube and episodes of animes I like (after all, you can't find any of those in stores anyway). Music? Only if I need it for RPG Maker or if I really, really like it (like the partial SSBB soundtrack I have on my USB). Apart from that, there's no need. Sometimes, the Greater Good calls for... less than scrupulous methods of action. |

I stick to the tried and true abandonware scene. You know, old DOS and Windows games that have been abandoned by their publisher because either the copyright expired or they release it into public domain. Safe and completely legal as abandonware's regulated by the ESA but that means that some of the really good stuff has to be bought somewhere or it's a walk down the road most traveled >.> |

Your not the only one Arkei downloading tons of roms. I have that as well way back ago. And of course I am downloading music, but that's been uploaded by other people and I don't take that as a serious note of piracy. Anyway I know some of my friends carried out downloading games, while I have always been a trustworthy buyer even if it have cost me almost my whole lifesaving ones. Still I am not innocent ether. |

That would be the collector's value. Being able to hold the physical game in my hands gives me a great sense of pride, because of this. And it's very easy to satisfy your nostalgia if it ever strikes, not to mention much more satisfying than just playing it on an emulator. And there actually is someone who loses from this arrangement...you. The guy or store who purchases your games/consoles gets it for pennies on the dollar of what it was originally worth. The only exceptions are when what you're selling is pretty new, or if it's a rare collector's item. This is why I rarely sell any game I buy, unless I absolutely hate it and want it out of the house as soon as possible. For example, my copy of Final Fight 3 on the SNES is definitely not worth the $15 I paid for it at Game X Change. It's worth a lot more to me than that. Even if I could sell it back to that store for the same amount of money, I absolutely would not. For years I kicked myself for not buying it when it was new, and when I tried it on emulator it just wasn't the same. I worked way too hard to find that thing, and I can make an extra $15 anyway just by staying at work an extra 40 minutes. Edited by Nail Strafer, Oct 31 2008, 05:07 AM.

But what about ROMs you can purchase on Virtual Console? Or the old arcade and console games you can get on Xbox Arcade? The "I can't buy it anyway because the game/console was discontinued long ago" argument doesn't really hold up in this case. I feel like I'm being a wet blanket here, but it could be a good issue to discuss in a topic like this. Edited by Nail Strafer, Oct 31 2008, 05:19 AM.
