Nice and cheap for anyone thinking about getting one this Holiday for all the great games coming out. While the 40GB may have been discontinued back in July, the nixed model can still be found at retailers with a sizable stockpile of the console. According to reports, Blockbuster, as one of the few retailers still carrying the SKU, will be dropping the price of the console by $40. An internal memo from Blockbuster has indicated that the price cut will be taking effect this Sunday. The rather humorous new price of the console, $360, will undoubtedly boost holiday sales and clear out the remaining stock. To sweeten the deal, Blockbuster will also apparently be selling the bundling the 40GB model with an HDMI cable, Spiderman on Blu-Ray, and Transformers the game for $400. |

I'll pass. ![]() To be fully honest Sony makes almost no profit from each of these consoles, but with a steadily declining rate of sales they drop the price of a specific model so that they will lose money per sale but end up not losing as much in the end. It's a risky move, but it will bring joy to anyone who actually wants the "George Foreman Grill." |

The only decline in sales was due to the usual "summer = not much and holidays = cram everything in" and hasn't been steady either. PS3 will easily match the "lower priced" console's sales this holiday, because the demand is high with tons of games coming out it's enough for people not willing to buy one yet to finally get one. Probably won't sell as well as the Wii though... Btw, it's not Sony dropping the price, it's Blockbuster and Sony isn't the only one to lose money on a console. The original Xbox never made a profit and I'm pretty sure the 360 is still losing money for Microsoft. Nintendo's the only one that doesn't price their console lower than it's worth. The 360 is actually turning a profit ever since the new chipsets came in. And the video game industry has always been primarily based on profit via software and accessories I will admit. In those categories the 360 and Wii still pull away from the PS3. The 360's major profits also coming from Xbox Live.. which, believe it or not, is worth the price. And neither the 360 or the PS3 can keep up with the Wii due to its broad appeal and low pricing (considering a model of the 360 DOES match it now.) The PS3 isn't the only console getting cheaper as time goes by, and all of the consoles will have perks and packages to draw consumers their way for the holiday season. I won't buy a PS3 since a good friend of mine has one and I play through it, we both prefer the setup in my home however. ^^ Nintendo is coming back with a vengeance after being completely outclassed last gen, to be honest, I'm happy they are since they are supposed to be the big dogs in the yard. |

Profits don't matter, if the consumer is benefiting from it. PS3 will live on for 8 more years, no doubt long after 360 and Wii have been discontinued with their new consoles being sold(Playstation Systems always last 10 years), and it'll be making a profit then and probably this holiday. They have said they are close to turning a profit. Meh.. Nintendo is coming back with no soul. GameCube was way better than the lackluster Wii. Ok ok, it has some good games, but Nintendo is focusing mostly on peripherals shaped like guns/etc. What are they going to do next gen? They can't do the same thing, because it'll just be seen as an old idea that they've already done. Will they invent a new controller? They'd have to, to keep any interest in them. I'll pass on the 40GB model too. When I buy a new console, I usually hang onto it until it's utterly destroyed, which could be many years down the line. I'm still using my original NES 18 years after getting it. I'd rather get the new 80GB base model and enjoy the extra storage space for the many years I plan to own it.

I pass on PS3 as well. notice that xbox 360 consoles have dropped considerably. the arcade is $199, the pro (20 gig) is $249, the pro(60 gig) is $299, and the elite(120 gig) is $349. |

You can always upgrade the HDD... Well I guess a $40 difference isn't much, but people will eat it up. See most people don't care how much it costs them in the long run, they only care about a one lump sum... It's the initial cost that concerns them, not the cost of something in the long run. In your case, if you were to get a PS3, you'd be better off getting the 160 Gig model with a free game bundled with it. No point in getting the inferior 80 gig model, if I'm accurately judging your stance. @ King Aragorn. You already have a 360, do you not? Why would you care about the 360 prices? Also, if you don't have one, why jip yourself because it's cheaper? It's much more worth it to save up and get a better deal than to just buy something because of price. All depending on your opinion of the consoles though. @ Beta Ray. You will get a PS3... When the price is right. You've said you had a PS2 and you loved the games on it, well that means you love the games on PS3 as well. All of the negativity about the PS3 I've heard from you stems from your bitterness to the price. Here's a tip.. Go to Rent A Center... You rent the system until it's paid off and it's yours, eliminating the obvious barrier preventing you from getting one. |

First, a $140 difference over the base 40 GB system is quite another thing from a $40 difference. Secondly, I don't think I'll need that much space. With my Xbox 360, this is how I've used my storage space on my 20 GB hard drive. 497 MB for game saves 3 MB for gamer profiles 27 MB for themes 3 MB for gamer pictures 4 MB for system items and this is after more than two years of ownership. I am not a fan of paying for downloadable content, you see. I prefer buying physical products that I can hold in my hand, like more game discs.
I hear you get a pretty rotten deal at those rent-to-own centers. One guy I heard got a full house of furniture, and when he did the math after he finally finished all his payments, he discovered he'd spent three to four times what he would have spent if he'd just bought the furniture at the start. A better tip for the long run would be to rent the system for a short time, see if you like it, then if you do like it, take the rental back and buy your own system. I think PS3 is overrated... there's only one game I like on it, the MLB series... Still may get it for this eventually. |
