The way I see it, the contenders for Game of the Year will be: Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, and possibly Fable 2.

Which ones do you expect to win? My guess goes towards Little Big Planet or Grand Theft Auto 4. Why? LBP is a game changing innovative title and GTA4 has a lot of hype with lots of fanbase(it already sold 10 million). If there are any titles that I missed that should be contenders, please add them.

I say that Left 4 Dead is making an impression and could definately be in the running. Dead Space also looks interesting, however it looks like that may not be coming this year.

I'm willing to put money down on Gears 2 or Fable 2 getting it.

Eh, I really doubt Gears 2 will get it. A strong contender, yes, but I don't see it actually winning. I could be wrong though...

It's not the first game/ network to do such a thing so that's not a revolutionary feature.

Oh! I forgot about Fallout 3, that game is definately amazing enough to have a shot!

And, having played Gears and a good number of these games at PAX, I could see it hanging on to win or at least until the top 2.

GTA4, I suppose would be it.

But I don't really care either way who wins it. Game of the Year only means a lot of people, magazines, and websites like a game. That doesn't necessarily mean YOU will like it too. Listening only to what others think (instead of what you think) can cause you to miss out on titles you would have loved, and end up buying games you end up hating.

Sorry, rant’s over…I just have a great disdain for letting magazines and websites tell me what games to buy.

It doesn't have to be first to be an awesome feature. It is a rare feature, however, and none of the other contenders have it... Plus the game has the most indepth creation system ever. It's definitely going to be a hard one to beat.

As for Gears 2, it's good, but I don't think that good. The only way I could see it winning is if it came down to Resistance 2 and Gears 2. Only because MS has more money to throw around to sway the decision. :D

Fallout 3? Perhaps, but probably RPG game of the year, I don't think it could beat heavy weights such as Metal Gear Solid 4, or Grand Theft Auto 4. A good game, no doubt.

I agree with Nail Strafer though, it's all someone else's opinion and the only games that ever win are the extremely overhyped ones. Kinda like how back on PS2 GTA3 stole the GOTY from Metal Gear Solid 2... Don't think it deserved it, but whatever...

GTA4 sucks IMO. Seriously, it's just all of the last games, with a slight graphics tweak.

It is, but nobody apparently cares, considering how well it sold and how it's gotten near universal acclaim from professional magazines and websites. So it probably will be GOTY due to its huge popularity.

To be honest I only named GTA4 because it's the only game in that list I've actually played XD Like I said, I don't like using websites or magazines to help me buy games. So, ironically, I have no idea what most of the popular games these days are.

Indeed it doesn't have to be the first to be awesome.. but that one feature doesn't make it completely extraordinary. First off, when it comes to map making both the Wii and 360 have games that have at least limited map making capabilities (SSBB = extremely limited Halo 3 = I have been able to recreate almost ANYTHING in it) so yes.. the competition DOES have it in a way. And as for making money based on user created content.. Microsoft has been doing that for about one and a half years now through the Xbox Live Arcade. LBP takes it to a new level but it isn't a game that "sells" the PS3 for me.

Gears 1 beat the living crap out of Resistance 1 and I don't see how the tide could have tremendously changed just because both tacked 2's on. I saw people playing Resistance and while I think it looks good and plays good (look moderately fun) Gears DID look better, so the all mighty graphical power of the PS3 is trumped by the 360 again. I will admit I'm slightly bias since I only played Gears, but my opinion stands and I acknowledge yours. I doubt it will have to do anything with big pockets as it is.. all though that's all I hear from people.. "Microsoft only wins because it throws cash at things.." I think when 360 games win things.. it's because they actually DESERVE the award(s) in question.

I will doubt peoples sanity if MGS4 wins.. that was so boring.. and it was more an interactive movie than a game, IMO. GTA4 (as stated) is just a fancier looking GTA that I thought looked and played very sloppy, just turning around is a pain in the ass. I would much rather play San Andreas since it is BIGGER more DYNAMIC, and is much more fun overall, complete with a story on or above 4's level.

Fallout 3.. Bethesda.. a.k.a. FROM THE MINDS BEHIND Morrowind and Oblivion.. if that game isn't considered heavyweight then nothing really could be...

While awards races are fueled by hype e.t.c. generally the game of the year is at least guaranteed to be dependable, as is any other game considered for the title. And we have a full slate of hopefuls coming this Holiday season that I plan to get my hands on.. I don't care who wins.. since I will be happy in playing all the ones on the 360 and Wii. <3

Just turning around? All you really gotta do is stop, reverse, pull a J turn, and you're on your way...or a quick pull of the handbrake works too with how it makes you slide so much. I do both all the time when I realize I'm going the wrong way.

The on foot combat system has also come a long way. The only thing I really have a problem with is that the cover system is too sticky, and of course you end up targeting the wrong character sometimes. Apart from that though I'm quite pleased with what they've done.

Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. The bigness of San Andreas actually turned me off. I felt intimidated by the size of the game. So I hardly played it, because of that. See, I want the satisfaction of finishing a game. If I don't think I can do it, or if I think it'll take way too long, I won't play it. San Andreas fell into the latter category. Not to mention when they tried to do so many things I felt like the developers were stretching themselves a bit too thin, so that one activity never stood out in particular.

GTA4 is tighter and more focused in its scope, which I like. And after getting a great HDTV, I do indeed appreciate games that use high quality graphics. Sorry to say it, but last gen games just look like crap on my new set...and since I paid $1,400 for this TV I want to push it to its limits.

Not to mention, I enjoy Niko's character much more than CJ. Plus, GTA4's plot is much more beliveable. Yeah, this is GTA...but I thought San Andreas was straining credulity when it started throwing in jet packs, Area 51, and blowing up Russian spy boats. I thought they were pushing my sense of disbelief a bit too far out there, even for GTA. It kind of got in the way of me enjoying the story.

I loved GTAIV! <3

What about Mirror's Edge? A first-person runner. I fallen in love with the game and it seriously looks like a game that could win a couple awards.
