Command & Conquer Red Alert specifically looks into a 'what-if' situation when Albert Einstein goes from 1949 to 1927 to terminate Adolf Hitler just as he's leaving Landsberg Prison, causing a shift in the political balance where the USSR under Stalin gains a lot of military might and ground. Chronological intervention is what I call it. And there is a host of situations that would warrant it. Among them: the deaths of Lincoln, Kennedy (John F. and his brother Robert), King, and Bhutto; the Columbine and Virginia Tech shootings, Pearl Harbor, September 11th. The question is however, can we ever intervene and if so, how?

Everything happens for a reason. If we were to go back and change something, it would cause problems, and it would be... I don't know, cheating I guess. While I'm all for the progression of the human race, altering time to suit how we feel history should be played out is just playing God, and that's unacceptable. For example, if we were to go back and prevent, say, 9/11, as you suggest in your post, we'd be saving thousands of lives from suffering and death and millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent on clearing rubble etc etc. But then we wouldn't have cracked down on terrorism and anti-terrorism development would be much less advanced. On a more personal scale, the jobs previously held by the deceased would not be available, thus putting hundreds into different paths in life. Heck, we might even have the Republicans running America again, which turns everything into a whole new kettle of fish. There's so much more I wish I could put down here, but I'm drained from doing just this and also from doing a rather emotional piece for ORGIIIX. But the idea is this; don't look at the big picture. Look at the smaller scale instead and see where it leads you. I also recommend Ray Bradbury's 'A Sound of Thunder' for further reference.
