Kevin Maney writes: The biggest debate in tech right now is whether or not Comcast is pure evil. The cable giant says that starting Oct. 1, it will cap its residential customers' Internet usage at 250 gigabytes of data.

On the surface, that seems kind of reasonable. The limit is about 100 times greater than the amount of data an average Comcast user downloads per month. You'd have to download four standard-def movies a day or 62,500 songs a month to reach 250 gigs. Comcast argues that in most cases, the limit will shut down pirates who illegally download gobs of movies and songs and slow the whole system for everyone else.

But the tech community is absolutely hammering Comcast over this. GigaOm declares it's the "end of the Internet as we know it" -- well, for Comcast's customers, at least. (For Verizon and its FiOS high-speed Internet offering, Comcast's decision must look like manna from heaven -- a strategic hole in Comcast's business the size of a small planet.) ZDNet similarly argues that bandwidth caps will kill innovation on the Web -- since a lot of innovation is about taking advantage of broadband speeds and high-capacity hard drives. The Slashdot crowd is typically apoplectic about anything that smacks of repression of their Internet freedoms.

To be honest, Comcast's decision seems to me to be about television, not the Internet. Comcast's business is still centered on providing cable TV at $100, $150 a month. Internet video is starting to challenge traditional television, whether its reruns on Hulu or live convention coverage on MSNBC.com. Comcast wants to sell movies on demand over its cable system, but Netflix, Amazon and others are selling movies over the Web for less. And vidoe and movies, of course, are the largest bandwidth hogs on the Net.

So Comcast -- like Cox and other cable companies -- is in the position of providing a service that enables one of the biggest threats to its core business. That's one heck of an internal conflict. For now, the decision seems to be in favor of protecting the TV side of the business.

XP I use Shaw, and I'm switching to Telus. This doesn't really effect me at all. Comcast is a piece of crap anyway.

Well it's not Neo Metallix's fault. The ad generator just grabs key words from the topic and uses them to generate ad content based on what we are saying. I suppose it thought that since someone mentioned "Comcast" they might want to subscribe to Comcast. Still funny though. Oh by the way, I would love to take this moment to post an absence notice I made on Sonic Aftermath. Enjoy!:

$60 a month... $60 a month... If a cable company wants to charge me that much money for high-speed internet, I would expect them to live up to the following standards:
- All components I need to get online must be hand delivered to me by a cable employee or mailed to me.
- My service must be available 24/7 at blisteringly high speeds. No more than five minutes downtime per month.
- The cable company will assume I have a job, and that I can't just take off with little notice. It's that way for most people, after all. If I must meet a cable employee at my home on a weekday, by default they should ask if a specific time after 5pm is okay.
- I get reduced service rates and specials for being a loyal customer.
- If any of the above points are violated, I should get automatic bill deductions.

Instead, this is the bull#### that I have to put up with under Comcast, for $60 a month, because they’re the only cable company around.
- To pick up my cable modem and such, I must drive to a Comcast office on the butt end of nowhere and wait in line with several other poor souls. Right now, it takes me a 50 minute round trip to get out there, plus about 20 minutes of waiting. When I move, the round trip time will increase to 80 min. At the current gas prices I will be burning $6 or more in gas to do this. Why?! They have an office building downtown! Why can’t we pick up our #### there instead? People actually live and work downtown!
- My service will go down for hours or days at a time…usually once or twice a month.
- Comcast assumes I have no life. They assume that me waiting around for a cable employee at my apartment from 11am to 2pm in the middle of the damn workday is perfectly fine...because they always ask me if that time is okay first. I cannot meet them any later than 3pm to 5pm.
- Comcast only gives the specials and reduced rates to new customers to sucker them into Comcast’s web of suck.
- I am still charged a full $60 for my services no matter how much they suck.

Now that the rant is over and I’ve gotten that out of my system, let me explain what’s going on. I’m moving into my new apartment August 29…this Friday. I explained this to Comcast very carefully last week. They arranged an appointment to get it turned on at my new place this Saturday. They did that just fine.

But yesterday, something happened that really boosted up Comcast on the Suck-o-meter. They turned off my service in preparation for the move. WHY? I’m not moving until Friday! Why did they turn it off on MONDAY?! And what time did they offer to send a techie over to fix it? 11am to 2pm today...in the middle of a workday... GOD! And even though I told them to cut my bill instead of sending a techie, they sent a techie today anyway! They can't do ANYTHING right!

This is the last straw. I’m swapping to AT&T. They don't charge much less, but at least I'll finally be getting away from Comcast forever...and on top of that they mail you all the equipment. No need in driving out to meet them.

In any case, I’m talking to you from work. But until next Wednesday, I won't have home internet. Expect low activity until then.

I’m thinking about using Comcast’s slogan “That’s Comcastic!” as an insult now.

At least you have different companies in the U.S. .
Here in Italy there's a HUGE monopoly by Telecom.

Wow, that sucks... But here in America there are two companies for internet service. AT&T or Comcast. There are different mobile phone companies, but landline/DSL/Cable is bascially just two main ones that both rip you off.

I aint sure if we have Comcast or not. I think we either have that or somthing similar (Metallix, I think there are like 3-4 companies in US, not 2...) but if we have Comcast... I will have to behead the man behind this, implae his head upon a stick, and use it as a decoration on my front yard!

Pacfan has left the building. There will be no return from me either.
(Dubbmatic is my come and go account, as for this one, I want it to remain inactive, it symbolizes my solidified stay at Sonic Blast. To use it now puts it to shame)

*UPDATE: I have returned my name back to it's original form that most of you had come to know me by. It seemed more fitting.*

Good bye to any and all!
