Figure we have a few gearheads among us, besides me. Anyways, this is the official car thread of =SB=, where you can discuss things like what your favorite specific model/make is and why, upcoming brands or past ones and so on. You can also swap questions and answers regarding issues regarding to repairs and performance. I'll inaugurate it with a little bit of happy news. Some of you probably (scratch that, DEFINITELY) know that I'm one of the strangest people around here. Besides being our resident hardcore RoboCop fanboy and weaponry/military robotics and history buff, I also have a little thing for cars. I have several of the Need for Speed games (Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed and Hot Pursuit 2) and I use fan-made cars in those games (Yes, they're mainly cop cars =3) Strangely enough, I don't have my driver's license, or a car. I have an outdated permit which I'm going to renew sometime later this week. And on a better note... I'm finally getting a car. My sister (having gone through about all of Ford Motor Company's finest in their fleets (including a few Mercurys) >_<) is going to pass to me a late-1980s Chrysler New Yorker for the all-time great price of 0 dollars and 00 cents if I watch her kids for awhile while darling boyfriend does about a few weeks for his second DUI. Some of you probably know the New Yorker. For those that don't, here's a few things. The New Yorker is a luxury sedan, much like Ford's LTD and its 1990-onwards incarnation, the Crown Victoria, as well as the Lincoln Town Car. However, it has a few bells and whistles that make it stand out more than the others. First off, it gets at least 20 miles per gallon (very important these days). Second, it's got some cool electronic features that definitely say 1980s. Any of you Knight Rider buffs? Well this car talks too. It has a thing called the Electronic Voice Alert which tells you if there's a seat belt undone or if a door's open. What's also great is that it has a digital dash (Hey, it's like a DeLorean!.) There's all kinds of other luxury features that are typical on such a car. Leather steering wheel. Reclining seats. Wood trim interior. But overall, it sounds like it's going to be a great car. I'll have yet to decide that on its entirety when I get it. But I take it as a good sign that it's blue. Perhaps it's Sonic blue. ![]() More photos: ![]() -An '87 Edited by Cy-Fox, Aug 19 2008, 09:54 AM.

the DeLorean was the only car ever to be made in Northern Ireland. Its something we take pride in actually, ![]() My dad used to live next to the factory where they were built to. Of course they were built during times of great conflict here, and really, the DeLorean was a crap car made from melted down forks and knives. Anyways, I've had quite a love for cars, not so much now though. Still, one day I'd love to go out, but a Lotus Elise perhaps and take a trip to the isle of man. Its an island not too far from without speed limits. How amazing is that. |

20mpg? Ouch! Even in Constitutional-Right-to-drive-a-Hummer Land, that's less than wonderful for everyday use. (Fuel duty here in England is now beyond asinine, incidentally; I wouldn't mind so much except that our railway network is a national embarrassment, as is practically every other public amenity.) Anyway, for my part I've got my eye on a Lotus Elise, preferably not the latest model; I like the previous model's styling better. If my significant other hadn't forbidden me to get a motorcycle, I'd also be thinking of getting a Royal Enfield of some description; several of their best designs were licensed to an Indian company in the fifties and have stayed in production ever since, and a British company is importing them and painting them in the old colours. |

Wikipedia informs me that the Delorean in Back To The Future had to be refitted with the engine out of a Porsche; the stock model would have trouble reaching 88MPH if you put it in the launch catapult of an aircraft carrier. [/offtopic] |

Meet my companion for the last several years:![]() ![]() ![]() This is a 2002 Chevrolet Tracker...which is essentially a Suzuki Grand Vitara with bowtie badges. And it's built in Canada. So this car is Japanadimerican in origin. Regardless, little trucks and SUVs designed in Japan are dependable little things, and this car certainly hasn't disappointed in that regard. The only problem I've had is getting a "Check Engine Light" to function properly, and that's about it. The greatest thing about it is that it's small on the outside, but when you get inside you feel like you've stepped into a small room. So you can get through a lot of gaps most other cars would have trouble with, and you can carry a lot of things in it too with the seats down. It served me well when I was working for a hospital's technology office...where I'd spend all day long hauling printers, computers, and monitors back and forth across the Little Rock/North Little Rock metropolitan area. The little size let it slip through tight spaces in this urban area easily. Small size also means low weight, with 26 MPG on the highway, despite the brick-like aerodynamics. Naturally though, it's very slow. Forget merging onto a road in heavy traffic, or powering around tractor trailer rigs. I would feel nervous about going faster anyway, to be honest. This thing feels kind of wobbly when you push it too hard, and you think it's going to fall over. So I usually take a relaxed driving style with this thing, and it stays much better behaved. My dad purchased it new in 2002. Then this year I bought it from him for $4400, so it's all mine now. I've considered buying a new car many times since I started living on my own...but I simply cannot find anything that gives such a lovely combination of fuel economy, outward size, interior size, and maneuverability for the money I paid for it. I always make car threads, but no one has seemed interested!! My favorite cars right now are the '09 Camaro, '08 Solstice, and '08 Sky. I drive a CRAPPY '88 Acura Legend and a nice '85 Chevrolet Suburban. 15 mpg, baby! Anyway, I used to drive a '96 Pontiac Firebird Formula. Best car we ever owned.

Wow... My favorite sports car got beat. Not to say I don't like the Viper, but I prefer the Corvette. Unbelievable.... A 2009 Dodge Viper ACR has claimed the fastest time ever for a production car around the Nürburgring. The lap of 7:22 is just a few ticks quicker than the 7:26.4 lap set by the 2009 Corvette ZR1. It doesn't come as much of a surprise, since the ACR is the most brutal version of the already-unforgiving Viper, whereas the ZR1 actually drives well on the road. Nonetheless, the Viper ACR is the new unofficial king of the 'Ring. http://jalopnik.com/5042855/2009-dodge-viper-acr-steals-nrburgrin g-record-from-corvette-zr1-laps-in-722 |

Hi Neo... I actually test drove a '09 Pontiac Solstice recently. Because I like my little yellow car so much I'm pondering getting a second car meant purely for fun. You know, instead of just buying a car meant to replace my Tracker. But I was rather disappointed with the Solstice to be honest. It didn't feel that much faster than my current car and I didn't think it was that remarkable on a country lane either. Plus, for its sticker price, I could get a Subaru Impreza WRX easily. It would be far more practical and speedier to boot. Then again, I was only driving the base model. There is that GXP model with the turbo and all...although I think $30,000 is a bit excessive for an impractical car like a convertible. Regardless, I do enjoy test driving cars, so I'll take a Saturn salesman's offer to try out their turbo Saturn Sky, since it's basically a mechanical twin of the Solstice. Still though, it'd have to be a real good drive to win my heart. You can buy a lot of different kinds of cars for $30,000, and many of them would be a lot more practical to own than a convertible. Also, since I'm looking for a low-priced convertible, I'm definitely giving a Mazda Miata a try sometime too. It's widely reputed to be the best convertible for the price, so it wouldn't be right if I didn't give it a shot. Edited by Nail Strafer, Sep 2 2008, 01:12 PM.

I liked the old Two Thousand better, personally. Smooth and sleek suits the style of a high tech machine more than the big hulking body style of that Mustang. |

Flying Battery Act 2

Hey guys, sorry for the double post, but I wanna make an update. I said I was going to try out a Saturn Sky. Well…the saleswoman I was chatting with when I tried out the Astra wasn’t around, and they’d only let me sit in the showroom car when I asked for a test drive. The interior was much nicer than the Pontiac’s, and it looked cooler, but it had an awkward sitting position like the Solstice did too. The top wasn’t as complicated to work as I heard from automotive magazines…although it still had that trunk that’s filled with that big plastic lump. I love how the salesman I talked with conveniently forgot to point this out when we opened up the trunk. Anyway, since I didn’t get a test drive at Saturn like I wanted to, I decided I’d check out the competition and headed to the nearby Mazda dealer. A salesman offered me a spin in the Miata right away. After the test drive, I decided I would never set foot on that Saturn lot again. If I’m buying a low-priced convertible, this is going to be the one I get. There is absolutely no question about it. My heart told me I had to take it home that very day. Fortunately (or unfortunately, in my heart’s case) my more rational mind won out and I didn’t. But anyway…there were so many better things about that Miata compared to the Solstice and the Sky. I felt snug inside it at 5’11”, but it was also incredibly comfortable. The seat almost felt like a glove for my body. The top was beautiful in its simplicity. While sitting in the driver’s seat, you just flip a latch on the frame above the windshield and throw it back. It took just about five seconds. That’s it. It felt so magical with how easy it was. You don’t even lose any trunk space with the top down. And it felt so enthusiastic and agile, almost like a cat. The raw simplicity and lightweight nature of this car is simply awe-inspiring. You wonder why every car can’t have this zen-like nature to it. I enjoyed it very much. I’d be strongly tempted to purchase this car if I could find a good one for $23,000 or less. Any higher and we’d start getting into Impreza WRX territory and the like... Edited by Nail Strafer, Sep 8 2008, 10:51 AM.
