Prologue
North American Aerospace Defense Command
Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado
The United States
January 14, 2032

Lieutenant Colonel Jake Grey was forty-six years old and only felt half that, mainly because of the alternation between drinking green tea and drinking booze, both healthy pastimes back in his native England. The brown haired, stocky Briton had come into the Air Force after completing his A+ certifications in England and also becoming engaged to his Michigan sweetheart. He ended up getting into the Academy with surprisingly high marks and started to climb the fiber optic ladder of AFCYBCOM, the Air Force Cyberwarfare Command, responsible (since 2008) for protecting American computer networks and of course the American portion of the Internet. He was at the apogee of his career, being in charge of the security and operations of NORAD’s network. The Crystal Palace was well known around techie circles, principally because of the ‘80s movie ‘WarGames’. There was no WOPR system here, but a joint Air Force-Cyberdyne Systems team was working on an automated defense intelligence that would interface with the assets cranked out of the GLOBAL WARRIOR R&D program, an offshoot of the Army’s LAND WARRIOR from the ‘90s, expanded for not only land, but air and sea.

Grey really didn’t care for it though. He like several others, including Major General Robert Brewster (Ret.), preferred to keep humans completely in the loop. Sorry, sentients. That was the buzzword of the day since 2024 when humans made contact with intelligent life, in the form of anthromorphic beings called Mobians. Mobians were usually about a quarter to half the size of an average human, depending on genetics and they had an equal level of technology and intelligence. Surprisingly, humanity adjusted well to them. There were of course the fringe xenophobic groups and the individual activists, but the only major concern was Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, a former engineer from Omni Consumer Products, who lost his job when OCP was shut down in 2007 after a high profile scandal involving a failed RoboCop 2 prototype. Eggman was still well off however, having invested most of his wages in the appropriate markets, and he also had a nest egg from his family, which used to be a ever-filling fund until his grandfather decided to cut him off after a little temper tantrum in Mobius that ended in the destruction of the first human colony on the planet and also the death of several hundred Mobians.

Eggman had wanted to subjugate the planet for himself and populate it with cyborgs culled from captured Mobians (or sometimes humans) and married to leftover OCP technology and also full-fledged automated robots. He called his vision the Eggman Empire, but the Empire had yet to be realized because of the interference of not only the Earth governments, but also Mobius’ rising hero Sonic the Hedgehog, a blue Mobian with a hunger for speed and chili dogs. He held the Guiness World Record for fastest extraterrestial being and was signed up to compete in this year’s Olympics in Toronto. He was the biggest pain in Eggman’s arse and after a year ago, Lieutenant Colonel Grey was happy for it.

Eggman had nearly decimated the NORAD early-warning system with a botnet, a large group of computers taken over by a specially made program, modeled after the 2007-2008 Storm botnet. But with the help of Sonic’s best friend, a young orphaned Mobius fox named Miles Prower (but who preferred to be called Tails), the botnet was beat back and the NORAD intrusion detection system and firewall were boosted. Grey didn’t hold any grudge towards the young Mobian for outshining him. Grey respected the young fox very much. He was the expert in Eggman-based cybernetics and was also a great aviator to boot.

For that reason, he was bringing him back again. A special job had come up, one that distinctly suited the fox’s taste for intellectual challenges and mechanical work. It required an Air Force enlistment, which was technically illegal in any other case because of the fox’s origin and age, but Congress had in its rare moments of benevolence, gave the Air Force special permission to allow the fox to join. All it came down to was Tails’ acceptance.

There was a small chirping noise. Grey instantly knew what it was and pressed a stud on his plastiglass desk, causing a hidden holographic projector in both the base of his desk and on the ceiling to come to life and his computer to come out of standby. The standard desktop of the Air Force’s operating system faded into view, with a video conferencing application already up. Captain William Thorald, one of Grey’s top aides was at his desk, staring out at his commanding officer. Captain Thorald was also brown haired, but he was a tall, cadaverous man with a skeleton-like visage and a flat nose from a skiing accident in Michigan, which coupled with his roots in Ohio and the football rivalry that came with it, prompted a friendly exchange of wits relating to Grey’s wife which ended when Lieutenant Colonel Grey told the Captain to go piss up a rope.

“Sir,” Captain Thorald said in his fast-paced tone. “Prower’s cleared security and is on his way here.”

Grey nodded with approval. “Good. I take it Claudia’s already coming to meet him?”

Thorald nodded. Lieutenant Claudia Thorald was the Captain’s own aide and also wife. She was also the designer behind the physical remodeling of AFCYBCOM-NORAD that was ordered in ’29 and was in Grey’s opinion, a good choice for the captain, as she was just as smart as he was and also very attractive at the same time. “I gave her change for the soda machine too.”

“Good idea.” Grey said. Security had insisted that he be flown in with the Air Force’s own planes instead of him coming in on his own. Not only would Miles be jet lagged, but also probably a bit cranky. “I’ll have the door open for you three. Thanks.”

“Any time.” Captain Thorald said, and then hit a stud on his own desk, causing the conferencing app to fade away. Grey decided to keep his computer running. He opened up a desk drawer and pulled out a wireless mouse, still a staple in the military and used it to open up Prower’s file, which had a shortcut directly on the desktop.

Prower was a bit tall for his age. He was about 5 feet, 4 inches and weighed in at only 76 pounds. He had fur of a pale mix of orange and yellow and had blue eyes, the distinguishing feature besides his rare second tail, a feature that had given him a bit of ridicule early on as a child. But it also allowed him the peculiar ability to fly for a short range by spinning them like helicopter blades. If Charles Darwin were still alive, he’d have a heart attack after seeing it.

He was, as mentioned earlier, orphaned. It happened directly in Eggman’s 2024 attack on the first human settlement. The fox’s father was an officer in their local militia and his mother had gone with him as part of a diplomatic group and they were all ignited into ash by a stolen nuclear missile. Tails however, soldiered on through it and helped his best friend Sonic, get payback a few times. Psychologically, he was as tough as steel.

It took that kind of steel to do what Grey was about to ask the fox.

The Lieutenant Colonel got up from his desk and opened his office door and stood there as if he was a lower ranked officer or enlisted and waited. He craned his head out and saw Claudia and Miles come around the corner with William behind them. He then leaned back and smiled. Claudia stopped at the doorway. “Lieutenant Colonel Grey, Mr. Miles Prower as requested.” she said. Her voice had lost most of its German accent years ago since she came Stateside, but there were still minute traces of it.

“Come on in.” Grey said and let go of the door. He slowly walked back to his desk and settled down at his chair. Claudia side-stepped for Miles to come through. The young fox was wearing a white dress shirt, which was unbuttoned at the top. He held a can of lemon lime soda and walked up to one of the chairs that sat in front of Grey’s desk. Grey pushed a coaster out and the fox set the can down on top of it. “Thank you.”
“Welcome to NORAD Cyber Command again Miles.” Grey said. He clasped his hands together and set them out in front of him on the desk. “It’s good to see you again.”

“The same to you, Jake.” Tails said. “What can I do for the Air Force today?” He was sharp and straight to the point, the type of person no one dared to bullshit because he could smell bullshit a county away.

“There’s a job that’s come up. Long term.” Grey replied. “It involves the Eggman 100 series robots that were recently released.” Tails nodded and shifted slightly in his seat to get comfortable. “I’ve seen a bit about them already.”

”We know that, and that’s why I’m asking for you directly. We’ve come into a bit of a break lately with them. The Navy’s been able to capture a few and have given half of them to us to work with. We need a sharp analyst like you to tear them apart and figure out what data’s in them, and also to find where the chink in their armor is.” Grey said. He opened his desk drawer again and pulled out a manila folder containing the Congressional authorization and other papers.

“Interesting.” Tails put a finger to his chin and looked up at Grey. “What would I need to do in order to start?”

“You’d need to be inducted as a member of the Air Force. Normally this wouldn’t be allowed but,” Grey leaned forward and pushed the folder to Tails’ side of the desk. “Congress has made an allowance for you. You’d be placed into the enlisted corps within CYBCOM and sent to the research station, which is currently Space Colony ARK. You’d have a room there, and we’re also going to provide you with equipment to supplement your own and also help move your things up there. We might even be able to make an arrangement to put you on the civilian engineering team as well so that you don’t get bored out.”

Tails nodded. “It sounds like a reasonable deal.”

“There is one thing though. You’ll have to go through some adapted infantry training, which includes strenuous physical activity and also firearms training. You’ll also be issued a sidearm. Will you be able to handle that?”

Tails nodded. “As long as I can use my tails on the monkey bars.”

Grey laughed softly at that. “You’ll have to take that up with your instructor. So what do you say? Do we have an agreement?”

Tails then picked up his can of soda. “As long as they have this stuff up there, you can put me on MP detail for all I care. Do you have a pen?”

Grey nodded and pulled one out of his pocket and twisted the top half. “Here you go.”

Tails then opened the manila folder and started to fish for his first form.
