OK, I currently administrate a board, it isn't getting members even though I advertised lots, I tried to be original but still, fail.
What are your tips & tricks into making an active forum?

Shall EAT YOUR SOUL!

Some people I know advertise in ways other than the simple "post on a forum method" They actually instead do some forum advertising on video sites to go with that.. think of a real short ad idea with your site.. maybe just a pic of the front page with the site URL.. and try to convince people in 5-30 seconds time to check out your board. whether you use voice, music or whatever to make the ad attractive.. it works when pulled off correctly/

The problem is that I see people advertising their forums & they get members quick while my board isn't & if we do, they're always noobs.
So we don't have a fancharacter forum, big deal. We have an art forum though.
I've seen the majority of message boards being advertised here having a fancharacter forum, I don't want to have one.

A new day will come!
Maybe you're not adversiting it enough. You need to attract members with something unique. Try to be active, so the few members can be active too and attract guests to join. And, ask your friends to join, it works.

You just need a bit of patience, it requieres its time.
I'll never love again
Can I say that to you,
Will you run away
If I try to be true?

Key I've figured is to be a decent member on every site you post on. Popularity = members. You're popular with the lulzy crowd ;) and don't take that as an insult either, I sometimes wish I could just take the stick outtta my arse and join in... it's just that there aren't many people on here interested in lulz, it seems. And certain types of people attract other like-minded peeps.

Your recent posts are certainly along the right track to making your previous reputation go away, it must be said ^^

Putting that to one side, well I've not looked at your forum if I'm honest. Is it a decent place to visit? Does it have something different to make it look or be better or more unique than any other Sonic board?
Maybe even have a fan-character section - for the greater good of the forums, more than anything. But impose rules as to what constitutes a decent one, lead by example with a couple of your own to highlight what is good, and what is epic fael.
Of course if you choose not to have one, that's completely your choice. I think you're making a mistake, but if you're absolutely certain you don't want one then you should replace it with something else. As to what, I dunno ^^;;;

Making and running a successful forum half the time is a hit or miss thing. For some reason, some of them just suddenly grow out of control and others don't grow at all. You just have to have something that works for the people and active members. Not all people want to go to forums and many of them will just join and never come back. I don't know why people do it, but they do. Forums can be tricky at times, trust me. I've failed twice.

Another trick I picked up - don't advertise a Sonic forum on another one - especially not one like Sonic Blast. To make your members want to make your website a regular home for them, it needs to be different enough from where they started.

Through careful plotting and lulz like that, I've advertised here, on a pokémon forum, a Star Fox forum, deviantART... letting other people out there know that if they have another interest that they're more than welcome to indulge it at place X.... yes, I followed the advice in Metallix's post in the affiliates section and you know what? They work, they really do!

... of course I plan on getting a Bleach forum on the list at some point, because I believe BH is different from just about most other Bleach forums out there. It looks good for starters, and isn't dead.
That would be the exception to not advertising your (Sonic/insert fandom) on other (Sonic/insert fandom) forums, if you truly believe your product is that much better, different and unique. You need to be supremely confident that you're going to attract Sonic fans to your smaller Sonic site, and not the other way around.

Perhaps create incentives, or let people know that you've got big plans and they should jump on board to have a say in moulding the next big board? Your shout, after all, and after all that I believe I'm done.
