Would a free-roaming Sonic work?

Yeah, I know, there's a few Sonic Spin-Off Idea Threads already but since they've been inactive for several months I didn't want to post ressurrect. I was wondering, the adventure fields in Sonic Adventure and Sonic 06 allowed some extent of freedom to the player, what if that was taken one step further and one giant world map was created for Sonic to free roam in ala the Grand Theft Auto series?

Obviously you wouldn't have Sonic going around shooting people and committing crimes (Perhaps if Shadow was playable =P *tongue clearly in cheek*), but it could lead to things like missions loading up when you go into certain areas rather than hubs to action stages like Adventure and Next Gen were. The player could follow the main story or take on side missions like if you were playing as Sonic random anthros would want to try to match Sonic's speed in a race. To replace the police in Grand Theft Auto, the 'Wanted Level' system could take the form of Eggman sending forces after Sonic if he were to destroy any robots, or you could have some form of freedom as Sonic and hurt (but not kill) citizens by mistake and that would prompt the police to briefly chase Sonic.

Any thoughts?

Hmm..
That does sound like alot of fun, but I have my doubts that it would work with a game like Sonic. Desipite that, it would be extremly fun to have one.

The main probelm has been with 3D sonic games, that the speed included, has usually messed up moving about, and causing some glitchy moments. So running around an open area would be a tad messed up. But I know of a solution.
Ever play Assains Creed. By holding R2, it activated like an action mode, where the character moved faster.
That way for Sonic games, you could a slighty slower mode(sonic would still move fast enough), for obsacle like bits or taking out enimies, and a faster pace mode for getting a move on.

My idea would be more like Spiderman 2 and 3 was. But yours is just as good. Hope SEGA takes that into mind.

I still can't use this.

There's plenty of possibilities for a free-roaming Sonic game to work. They already laid down the foundation for it in the Adventure fields.

If they were going to expand that into the whole game though, I agree with cap's sentiment that the controls should be refined not only because they're not as solid and refined as they could be, but to give more options to the player as far as traversing the world. It would be nice to see Sonic equipped with a more acrobatic move set (flips, dashes, climbs, and jumps that can be chained) that allowed him to get around practically anywhere without the experience being automated. I also agree with him that having different speed options would work, too. It would allow you to truly explore at your own pace.

I also like the idea of a warning system, however much of a rip-off it may be XD, in that it will either alert Eggman or the police to your presence. Though, I would expand it past its dependence on hurting citizens and robots to give the player a more overbearing sense of consequence. For example, failing side-missions for the townsfolk or even refusing enough missions, getting low grades on levels, destroying property by accident or otherwise, and engaging in deviant behavior could all have a negative effect on Sonic's reputation. Likewise, being all goody-goody and an excellent player would have positive effects on his rep.

And being that it's ultimately a Sonic game, I would still like for there to be action stages, but not in the usual fashion. I could see the game actually housing levels inside of the overall hub world, and that you'd even be able to see the loops and things from different points of view in the town. Approaching such a "level" would immediately put you in a mission situation where you're given a task to get to the end of it, or find or destroy something, or even return to a level to access hidden areas and advance in the story. Even boss battles could work in this fashion.

So as you can see, there's a lot of potential for such a game to be made in the Sonic universe. X3;;

I think this would be a good layout, by expanding on some ideas expressed.

The game would based in a main futurstic city, controlled by Eggman. So basically you have his robos to deal with for bad behaviour. The city would then be slipt up into 3 to 5 different areas, each one sorta different from the rest, and you unlock access to each area through progression in the game.

then, outside the city, you would different areas. So you could have missions, that involve involve doing things in the city, and then others that require you visting areas outside.
All this would of course have to be seemless and include no visible loading times, so it would feel like a proper city.

I think this could work. I like the idea, I'm just not so sure Sonic Team could do the job....

Actually, after you beat Sonic 06, its an extremely good freeroam using any of the 3, especially Shadow, since his townsmissions are neutral, and involve driving in some. Shadow in 06 freeroaming is pretty much GTA Sonic style, imo, and I honestly enjoy it with each of the chars more than repeating missions.

It would be pretty cool to freeroam and not be limited to things. Like run around the city and run up the skyscrapers and jump off of them and not get hurt(like Sonic Adventure's first cutscene).

I was thinking about what the free roam is like in Sonic 06, but that one really sucks.
Its not seamless, and none of the areas connect, so it just feels complelty separate, and none of the areas really feel like they're close to one another.
Plus its pretty boring. The only thing to do, is the town missions which are pointless, and have not one, but 2 annoying loading screens.

Freedom seems to be a theme in the Sonic series, it'd be great if they could expand on that.

The idea sounds just awesome. I would have liked the mission based packed with action stages developing within the city it self. Or maybe use the waste amount of nature like "San Andreas" Leaving to many different of action stages found throughout the world as you are exploring while working on missions.

I like it. But like Neo said. I doubt Sonic Team would manage to get it succesful. It would have been maybe the outbreake for Sonic though since free roam all around Mobius. Maybe not used the whole planet. You know where i am heading with this.

And another thing they coudl add, making the game even more fun. Would be letting Sonic able to do whatever he wished for. Turning him into a super hero like he is known for. Or a dangerous villain and criminal. The matter would leave so many choises what you could do with a Sonic game. But this would have needed plenty enough with time and there is no such thing within the Sonic Team, that they make it available.

Maybe if Sonic would stay idle for a couple of years. No games at all. And then they would suddenly have been secretive in work with this game. It would have been a blast and i am sure Sonic fans and even more would be looking forwards for it's release. Even if the blue blur might have been dead for three or maybe even four years leaving them to work on such a big project.

I could go on and on. Since i always manages to create an illusion on how a game could be looking like. Yet, maybe the villain doesn't suit for kids. But i say Sonic aint that kid friendly now is it.

What is the difference between a duck?

This makes me think of some sort of big Sonic MMORPG or something.. while that may be fun those have never been my thing.. especially the pay per month ones.

And as for a general free roam, its not a bad idea but if its anything like Oblivion or Morrowind.. with a hedgehog running so fast the land would have to be huge to make for a meaningful distance feel and by that point there may be too much land for the games own good.

Let Rockstar Games make a game for Sonic and you'll have a place bigger then Liberty City(A Gigantic GTAIV city). Problem solved but will never probably happen.
