![]() NOTE: When something says "It will look like this" or something similar, that is referring to the picture above the text. ![]() Arright then! It's started! Yo camera dude, can I get a close-up? Just for a few moments? ![]() Right, this is perfect! Alright, let's get started! M'name's Kiara, you can call me Ki! Obviously, I'm a 'coon. Woot. According to the title of this topic, I'm supposed to teach you how to sprite. Cool~! We'll start out with a few basics! I'll teach you how to sprite the Dark Master! He's got a few good things on him, like markings, narrowed eyes, different quill lengths, bare feet... Awesome~! ![]() ![]() And if anyone calls the Dark Master a recolor... I keel you. ![]() Anyway, let's start. I've taken a stand! Let's sprite! Grab your bases, everyone! ALL YOUR ME ARE BELONG TO US Shut it, Sonic. Your font is blinding. ![]() Moving on, grab that nifty little magnifying glass on MS Paint's toolbar. If you're one of those Apple users... Well, you have nifty resizing tools that work. But I'm no good with that stuff, look for Pixen. It's apparently some program that's similar to Paint, but I wouldn't know. I don't even know where to find the thing. Anyway, MS Paint users... Use that nifty little magnifying glass to magnify the sprite 8X. It'll look similar to this in size. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Dark Master's got fur where Sonic would have skin, aside from the muzzle and inner ears. As such, we must recolor the skin tone to match the fur. Take three shades of one color. The lightest blue goes on the lightest skin tone, the middle goes on middle, darkest on darkest. I think we all know how to recolor. This is the only time I will demonstrate the actual recoloring. ![]() The Dark Master has a shorter top quill than Sonic. To make it shorter, use that nifty rectangle select tool and move the quill so it's shorter. You may have to pencil in some edits to make it look right. ![]() The Dark Master also has a longer middle quill than Sonic. Just use that rectangle select tool and grab part of the quill, dragging it away from the base. You may have to drag it in odd directions and pencil in the missing parts. Just make sure to pay attention to the shading! ![]() The Dark Master has bare feet! It's fun to make feet bare~! First you erase the bulky parts of the socks. It looks funky, doesn't it? Of course, we're not done yet! ![]() Fill in the color. DO NOT RECOLOR. If you do, it'll look awkward. Instead, do partly custom shading, partly base it off of the original shading. ![]() Now for the hands. Dark Master also has bare hands - No gloves! Wow. He's not your average Sonic character! Generally, all you need to do is recolor the gloves. If the cuffs are showing, you'll need to do the same thing you did with the socks. Sometimes erasing isn't necessary, however. ![]() Narrowed eyes! Remember how you made the top quill shorter? That's basically what you do to narrow the eyes. Just make sure there's color where it's supposed to be. ![]() His skin color is far paler than normal. He's a dark being, already dead! Whaddya expect? Anyway, just recolor the muzzle and inner ear. His eyes are dark blue, almost black - just recolor those as well. ![]() Now we're getting somewhere! Pencil in some markings. Make sure you put the lightest shade on the lightest original shade, etcetera! You want the shading to be correct! The Dark Master's quills always have red on the edges of them, no matter what angle you look at them at. It's magic, you know~ Never believe it's not so~! ![]() More markings. This time, they take up the entire hands and feet, as well as the rightmost part of the legs and the lowest part of his arms! Again, his arms and legs have the same rightmost/lowest markings, no matter what angle you look at them at. ![]() Recolor the fur. We're almost done! ![]() I forgot some markings while I was working on them. Silly me! Anyway, now we're done with the Dark Master. So, those are a few basic spriting skillz! I'll get on to spriting clothes later. ;P It'll probably come with splicing and making sprites taller or shorter~! Stay tuned~! Edited by Demon Manic, Jun 12 2008, 05:42 PM.

Wicked job "Almighty New Artist." I already knew about these things, but your tutorial makes it very clear to newbies. |
