I don't like him that much. But everyone else does. WHY? He's somehow a genius despite not having an education.
So (in game/SonicX canon) where the heck did he learn to make starships and mechs? Heck, where did he even get the RESOURCES to make them? You can't exactly make a warp drive out of junk laying around the average suburban garage. Yeah, I've heard the "well Sawnik can run fast so y can't tails be teh geenyus lol?" excuse, but that doesn't cut it. Superhuman physical abilities are NOT in the same boat as mental capabilities and financial status. I'm not even going to go into the "chosen one" bull that's in the comics. I'll rage until sun up. The fandom bugs me more than any canon. People completely rape his character and try to make him "badass". He's an eight year old for Christ's sake... This happens especially in the future fics. Where for some reason Sonic is either dead, or the biggest douche in the universe. And Tails is a bad-A mechanic/mech pilot with a heart of gold who occasionally angsts about Sonic's death and/or douchey abusive behavior. Thinking about it makes me ulcer. Most fancharacters are recolors of him, or at least foxes. The supposed orphan probably has the largest fandom-created family of any character EVER. 9/10 characters based on Tails have the last name Prower. No joke. These are tru fax. What bugs me more is people who think Tails' neon colored sis/bro is original. It's so common that every time I see a character like that I _really_ have to restrain myself from writing some long, drawn-out flame (yes, this applies to SB members too) He also has more pr0n made about him than any Sonic character. But for the sake of everyone here who isn't a hopeless gay furry let's not get into that. So why does everyone seem to have such a fascination with him? He isn't exactly cuter than the other characters. I find his square head quite repulsive in fact. Is it just because all furries are hos for foxes? C'mon peeps, I need an explanation. |

I don't think there is much to complain about concerning Tails' abilities as a genius. To be more specific, he is what we call a child prodigy; an exceptional child able to mentally perform at an adult level in various areas. One does not need a formal education to be one-- all they need are high mental capabilities. Him being able to tinker around with mechs efficiently is probably not that much of a stretch either. They live in a society that is hundreds of times more advanced than ours, and what we consider to be futuristic and impossible or at least difficult to maintain and use could be comparatively mundane to them. Remember, Sonic is not a genius at all, yet he is significantly young to know how to fly and upkeep a biplane, much less own one. It is also very possible and logical that in Eggman's many wakes of destruction, Tails used discarded and broken bots as fuel for experimentation. I don't think it's as far-fetched as you're making it out to be. X3 Concerning the fandom, I agree full-heartedly. We've subjected the characters to many out-of-character moments and situations to the point where we have created our own cliche's, though Tails seems to be one of the more abused characters probably due to a multitude of reasons. For one, he's had enduring popularity from the time he debuted, probably on account of the fact that he's a fox: a species of animal that has always been pretty popular and standardized in fiction (in and out of the furry circle. <<) He is also the one who undoubtedly has the closest bond to the main hero of the series, a hero that is the very definition of independent and cool, no less, and therefore that makes his importance and popularity even higher; after all, he's definitely with the "in-crowd". And then again, I go back to his storyline during the Adventure series and his need to be his own hero-- those types of themes have proven to be so popular that apparently they just set fire in the fandom as you pointed out. Also, he's young, and as such has a huge future ahead of him. All of this just makes him ripe for exploration, or as you might put it, exploitation. Though, don't take my latter explanation as worth anything. XP I'm not that big of a Tails fan either, though I don't dislike him at all. Without any real development since seven years ago, at this point, he's just there; the arbitrary sidekick/technical genius that every cliche' hero needs by his side. However, I can see how one might find him cute being that he's a fox cub and his Genesis sprites were indeed kinda <3-worthy.

There is the theory that one COULD (not saying that it's true, but COULD) reason that Tails is a technopath/telemechanic (ie Marvel's Forge has the ability to design and create any machine he so desires). The only difficulty is resources, which he probably scavs off Eggman's robots or salvages from Mobius' seemingly endless supply of gadgets. Another theory is that he is simply gifted in mecha design; Mozart had the aptitude for music from a very young age, probably seven I think, and there was an artist whose name eludes me who could draw incredibly well from the age of five. Or maybe he just lacks a real plot device at the moment, which Sonic Team will hopefully clue up on. Also, what you see as 'cute' is different to what others see. I say that yes, he could be classified as 'cute', whereas you don't. Miracle of human nature, y'see. It's all a matter of opinion. Besides, Tails just has some kind of pull. Couldn't explain what it is, but he's got a pull for sure. |

True tails isn't actually exciting. I mean his attacks include throwing a box of rings at enmies. Honestly, why. I thought rings were good. Though i do like the idea of him grown up, since it makes him seem less pathetic, and more of a worthy character. |
