Sega, Obsidian Announce Alpha Protocol

We know what it sounds like, but no, Alpha Protocol is not the generic subtitle to a new Tom Clancy game. It is, in fact, the generic main title to a new RPG from Sega and Obsidian Entertainment, makers of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2. Despite the name, the game itself sounds intriguing: if Mass Effect was BioWare's original take on Star Wars/Star Trek material, Alpha Protocol is going after James Bond.

Set in modern times, the game follows Michael Thornton, a "talented young agent cast out by his government" who has secret information that could defuse a looming international crisis. The press release is slim on country and agency specifics (CIA? NSA? Something fictional?), but it does hint that Alpha Protocol will have the sort of difficult moral decisions that have become de rigueur in BioWare's and Obsidian's RPGs. In another similarity with Mass Effect, Alpha Protocol will also have fast-paced action elements rather than turn-based or menu-controlled battles.

"Alpha Protocol blends Obsidian's knack for intricate story, engrossing characters, and significant character advancement with fast-paced modern combat," said Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment. "Alpha Protocol embraces everything we enjoy about making RPGs from a fresh perspective. We are confident our talented staff at Obsidian will enable us to deliver this exciting RPG experience."

Sounds promising, but we'll have to wait a while until we can see how it's shaping up -- Alpha Protocol is currently slated for an early 2009 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. That's plenty of time to consider various name-change options, right?
