What's this? Something not Sonic related? Guys, this image is the only reason you haven't had any more Minecraft videos or the latest MoDCast. It took me all. Freaking. Weekend. Seriously... Click on the image to view it fullsize :) Feedback welcome as always.

My first attempt in using acrylics since leaving college(so about 10 years, just over) and my first ever on canvas. This is purely so I don't cack up some Converse for the girlfriend, and I think it's coming out alright so far. This is also the main reason I've not submitted anything for the lovely badnik contest yet!

Nearly a month has gone by, so it's time for an update on the canvas I'm working on.

Added Caterkiller and Buzz Bomber, and the beginnings of purple bricks.

WOW!!! This is...amazing! I never used acrylics. I'm not good at coloring like that. Wait, you're using oil pastels, right?

No. Acrylic paint. Oil pastels are completely different!

:P

I know, but I heard my art teacher say at one time that pastels can be considered as acrylic, but I thought she was stupid or something, but ended up believing it anyway since she's the teacher and I'm not. And doing that with paint? that's even more freaking hard for me! I can't paint...at all.

Yeah you're right, your teacher was an idiot :P Acrylic paints are basically a quick-drying polymer emulsion, whereas oil pastels are sticky and greasy and tend to take a long time to dry if not sealed - acrylics can be diluted with water when wet, and are pretty much water proof when dry.
To be honest, I wouldn't really know how to use oils properly whether in paint or pastel form so acrylic is a safe bet for me anyways. Using acrylic is easy enough; I work with a base colour and before it fully drys, I put the top coats on - by the time the base coat is drying, I've finished the shading and highlights as it's easier to blend the colours while they're still damp. I then leave them until they're dry to the touch before doing harsh/sharp highlights, such as white flashes of light.
Speaking of highlights, when it comes to a lighter shade of colour(for example, a lighter purple) don't use white. I use either light blues or reds, dependant on the end result I want. White just makes everything look chalky and unnatural.

There's no harm/shame in taking your sweet time and multiple coats - in fact, it's probably better to use two thin coats than one big thick one as they dry quicker and use less paint, and give a much more consistent colour.
I'm also using a variety of brushes; one reasonably thick one for larger areas, one medium brush that is small enough for basic detail, and a thin brush for the detail work.

The reason I'm even doing this is because I don't have much confidence in my abilities; my girlfriend has asked me to paint her some Converse shoes to look like something from Nightmare Before Christmas. As I hadn't really touched acrylics since I was about 16, I felt it would be a cheaper/safer bet to practice on some canvas first. I could have used thick card, but canvas is similar in material to Converse hence the choice.

TL:DR - practice and take your time, no matter the medium.

That is beautiful...terrific job. It almost looks exactly like a screenshot of the game.

it is way too cold for this
oh wow that is actually really neat.

definitely could have used some polishing at the sketch stage, though. one good trick for lettering like in the hud is to use a ruler to make lines where you want the tops and bottoms of the letter to be.

it's an old comic book trick that helps keep all the letters the same size. it also keeps them from slanting and doing other weird things like that.

using a ruler to keep all the bricks the same height might also have helped it look more authentic. that kind of stuff is all geometric so you'd want to measure them and keep the height measurements the same. not necessarily the width, of course.

the colors are spot-on and you did a fantastic rendering of the sprite and background. the lines are nice and sharp. overall i'd say you did a really great job!

looking at your wip, i'm actually rather impressed that you got such a good result. starting with the foreground seems like it would make things rather difficult. i guess it depends on preference.

@Sly - you're not the first to say that. I'm guessing that's a good thing... :P Thank you!

@Kiara - pro tip, can't believe I didn't even use it in the first place D: With regards to working from the front back, it's just the way I've always worked with acrylics. Return tip for you: masking fluid. Thankin' ya kindly for the constructive feedback :)
