Lately, I've been kicking myself for still using this Pentium 3 with Windows 98, because there's hardly any commercial games out there for sale that supports Windows 98. And I don't have the money for CSS or Counter-Strike Condition Zero. I do play CoD4 at school but that's only for an hour a day. So then I discovered some very awesome free multiplayer FPSes. Some of them I found myself, some were found by word of mouth. Here's a list. Also note that all items on the list were checked for Spyware, viruses and other inconveniences. AssaultCube Referred to me by Miles Attacca http://assault.cubers.net AssaultCube is a Counter-Strike style game that is freely adjustable. It can run on anything down to a low end Pentium 3 on up. The funny thing is that I tried running AC on my sister's Compaq (she plays World of WarCraft on it regularly), and it lagged, even on its minimal settings. (It being a Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM). BUT AssaultCube flies for me on my laptop (Pentium 3 - 1Ghz, 256 MB of RAM, 16 MB ATI Radeon video card, Windows 98), without tweaking anything. AssaultCube has a wide fanbase, so you're not likely to find an empty server. ZDaemon Found by myself http://zdaemon.org ZDaemon is an online master server service for the old DOOM games. So if you have a legal copy of DOOM/The Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II or Final DOOM (or all three), you can fire up ZDaemon and play with other people on the 'net. As DOOM is a "low-end" game, anything that can display 256 colors on up, and has at least 32 MB of RAM can run it. (That being any computer past 1995 XD) it runs fairly well. Counter-Strike 2D Found by myself http://www.cs2d.com/ Love CS? Have an old machine? Try Counter-Strike 2D. This is a top-down conversion of Counter-Strike, with multiplayer abilities. It runs easily on my laptop, and my sister's WoW crackbox. I believe a Pentium 2 system can run it at minimum. I'll be adding more soon. Others can add on to the list. |

Best free FPSs? Tribes 2. 'Nuff said, most fun game ever. Although there isn't much online activity anymore, you can still find at least one game with activity. |
