Let's add another function onto the list of things the PS3 can do -- this one, however, isn't something we'd really like advertised. It's almost scary. Security-assessment.com senior security consultant Nick Breese has been using a PS3 to hack passwords and such. Apparently using a PS3 drastically increases the processing capability to do so, using the most basic of hacking tools -- brute force. By brute force we mean it just tries every combination of numbers and letters incredibly fast. The old upper limit of vector computing (Pentium) using common ciphers and hash functions was around 10-15 million cycles per second, but with the PS3, this has moved to around 1.4 billion cycles per second. That's really about all we're going to dive into. If you want to read about the complex workings of the "Crackstation" project, feel free, but don't go trying this stuff at home! |

I would have. I already knew the CPU was like 100 times faster than a Pentium 4.

Well one could say Microsoft and Apple do that with PCs/Macs.... Although they don't have the processing power that the PS3 CPU has. Only bad people use it for hacking, good people use it for making complex games.

ZOMG people stop saying you should nuke Sony HQ! then no more Little Big Planet, no more Ratchet and Clank, no more Resistance... NO MORE SONY!!! that's bad!!!! just because n00b hackers can't suck it up and use a Computer dosen't mean it's bad! the computing power is one thing Sony pushed for. No matter HOW or WHAT you put in it, it will ALWAYS be used for bad stuff. And anyway... for saying that stuff i should bring down the wrath of 1up forums down on you :o |
