I find that a lot of the time if you look at Sonic Team's wonderful Sprite Work... it has a pattern. If you find a sprite of Shadow and a sprite of Sonic, you will find all they did is edit in a lot of details, add stripes, and recolor, then POW Sonic is now Shadow. Same thing with Silver. I betcha Knuckles edits into Tikal easily. The truth is, in the real world, hedgehogs all look the same... this is the same as Echidnas, and sometimes foxes. This is reflected in the Sonic styles. They will all look basically the same with extras edited and recolored. If someone wants to recolor Shadow, making his shoes blue, the body yellow, and the stripes green and call him Hyperactivity, then they can do that! cuz i SWEAR that there is going to be lots of hedgehogs out there that look a lot like Shadow. Like... hmmm... oh i know! Mephiles... here's shadow...  I don't care what the story is, for all i know about Mephiles he could be Shadow's clone... but what i DO know is that they both look almost EXACTLY the same. Get a shadow sprite and recolor the stripes and you've got Mephiles. If you want to make recolors/edits, then you should be able to. Heck... some recolors/edits i see i think would make quite good official sonic characters. I would like people to use this as a reason... however small the reason might appear... to EASE UP on those of us who can't make good sprites from scratch. |

For starters, Mephiles is not naturally like Shadow, he's generally a pile of purple stuff, but he chose to manifest himself in the shape of Shadow. Secondly, Mobius isn't the real world. Animals on Mobius are more like humans than they are animals. Using the logic that you've used, which is basically "they're all the same shape", you could use the same reasoning with humans, which would be something like "why don't we just recolour people?". At least God bothers with splices. There you go people - somebody to look up to. GOD. Without recolours and edits, spriting would be GODLIKE. 8D Why would you even want to look like the official characters when you could look like something that suits your personality? Thanks to my practise with spriting, my character looks almost exactly as I would imagine my own personality to be incarnated as a Sonic character. I'm much happier with Gale than I am with Generic Shadow Recolour #42, or Generic Tails Recolour Lacking One Tail #OVER NINE THOUSAAAND. Besides... TOO MANY HEDGEHOGS. Seriously. It's stupid. Why would you even want to be a recolour or minor edit? |

Sonic Team is a bad example. Their work has been lacking in effort (AND LOVE) as of late. Just because they didn't feel like making a brand-spanking-new character for once doesn't mean half-assed fancharacters are suddenly okay. |

@Gale: Thank you for clearing up that Mephiles thing, Gale! And if you haven't noticed in the sprite world... take one style of spriting and all humans in that style will be very similar. Sure, "recolor" the skin and "recolor/edit" the hair... "edit" the clothing... "edit" the size, shape... same thing! And did you ever think that "Generic Tails Recolor Lacking one Tail #OVER NINE THOUSAND" of someone else could actually be reflecting someone's personality in the Sonic world? Spriting isn't Godlike (nor will it ever be)... it's actually kind of a cruddy way to make grafix that the gaming industry came up with when they had crappy technology. @duckroll: considering back when Shadow was new i bet you he was a full-fledged "spanking" new character with a totally new idea near the pique of Sonic Team's business. Did i mention he is a skilled edit of sonic? yea... @ShadeTH: lolz copy paste is allowed... just give credit to me =P |

No, not really. The only possible personality I believe it could show is that of somebody who believes that 8-year-old children look excellent naked. It barely even shows Tails' personality, and that's entirely through the head - and the face is easily spliced onto another body.
I do apologise, I wasn't aware you didn't have a sense of humour. I shall attempt to be as serious as possible right away. |

<_< my sense of humour actually sounds like humour... you just threw in humour inside critisizm in such a way that it sounds like you're serious. What's the big deal, anyways? BTW: the sprite shows Tails' personality quite well, actually, and probably the top two personalities it would show is: 1. Tails rocks!!! i'm just like tails =P 2. Tails looks better in another color and the two tails just make him look freaky O_o |

Golden makes excellent points. Recolors/edits shouldn't be frowned upon... and not because Sonic team does it. Sonic = Amy = Shadow.... Tikal = Knuckles... Also he makes a good point that species of an animal look the similar. Why should an echidna look nothing like Knuckles? All of his ancestors looked like him... See? |

You guys DO realise that you're encouraging people to lazy about with their spriting and stay with their recolour shit? Critique is the key to improvement, being constantly babied with 'it's a good start' isn't gonna help anyone. If someone makes a whole recolour sheet of Sonic with one added quill or something they don't need to be told 'WOW THAT IS AWSUM!' what they need to be told is. "You just wasted some long ass time doing a bunch of recolours when you should be working on doing something more orginal." NO! Being nice and babying them doesn't help because they get spoilt and lazy, so when they actually get out to bigger forums where they don't have "baby the recolour spriters" principle they're gonna get critique and BOY they're not gonna like it. |

Flaming recolors wonīt help. If people like re-coloring, let them. The Sonic fanbase is FULL of recolors and that canīt be changed. By the way they all are based on some sprite from Sonic Advance or something, who cares if thereīs something added or not? Fanchar is fanchar. |

No. Shadow has redesigned spines. red strips, totally different shoes, different gloves. In fact the only thing thats really the same between shadow and sonic is there mouth and ears. Silver on the other hand is a completly different design. He looks nothing like either hedgeohg before him in reality. I have a picture with all the characters on it, and they are all different and unique. The only recolour in the series really is eggman nega. I mean look at Blaze, Rouge and Jet, all of them are original characters. |

unfortunately, as right as you are Cap, to most people nowadays who will use any excuse to complain, that IS a recolor. and they've become so sceptical to the series, that they just decide to say that Silver is a Shadow recolor(I'd still like someone who believe this to explain it too me) |
