Naturally, most had assumed Dr. "Eggman" Robotnik was responsible for this destruction, though the citizens of Mobius were not aware of the actual threat. Whilst Sonic the Hedgehog had been dealing with Robotnik and his robots, a new army had been in production; one that appeared to be more dangerous than Robotnik's. This army consisted of many soldiers, both mechanical and organic, as well as a huge fleet of battleships. It was controlled primarily by the sinister Grand Admiral Lex, a cat with bright yellow eyes and fur as dark as the night. As this army began to reveal itself and attack Mobius, many of the citizens attempted to fight back. Robotnik also tried to expand his army, viewing Admiral Lex as a rival for world domination. It seemed inevitable that a war would break out, and the people of Mobius had to choose the fate of their land. *** "The Grand Admiral said that Emerald should be around here. Let's scout the area. If you spot any resistance, do not hesitate to incapacitate them.", one of the soldiers said. There were four of them. Two robots of the F-038 class, a hedgehog, and a chameleon. The hedgehog and chameleon wore the typical dark armor of their army, which was capable of protecting them from some harm. "Yes, sir.", replied the hedgehog. It was a pretty nice day at Emerald Beach. Since there were reports of battleships in the air, most had decided to stay indoors, and as such, the beach was deserted aside from the soldiers combing it. That is, except for a fox with brown fur, and wearing a white shirt, with a black jacket and black pants. The fox was sitting in a chair, relaxing by the water. "Sir... someone's over there", the hedgehog stated to his officer. "Let's go check it out", commanded the chameleon. The group walked over to the fox. The chameleon pointed to him. "You there. Have you seen any suspicious emeralds in the area?", said the chameleon. The fox opened his eyes, and slightly tilted his head to acknowledge the soldiers. "Well... if I had found anything like that, I would've sold it", the fox said back. The chameleon seemed to be getting annoyed. "What is your name?", he asked. The fox replied, "Kcin... if you must know" The chameleon said, "All right, Mr. Kcin. I'm going to need to see your identification" Kcin said, "Actually, I was just leaving" At that, the fox got up to leave. Suddenly, the four soldiers pulled out rifles and pointed them at the direction of the fox. "You must comply", the chameleon growled. Kcin turned around and noticed the barrels of the guns pointed straight at him. "Or...?", the fox asked, though he already knew what these grunts had in mind. "Or you'll be terminated", the chameleon said bluntly. Kcin stared at the four soldiers. If he were to fight, he realized it would be four well trained soldiers against a scoundrel such as himself. The odds didn't appear to be in his favor... but Kcin wasn't one to worry about the odds too much anyways. "Well... I guess we'll see about that", the fox retorted. Kcin quickly reached into the holster at his belt, and pulled out a pistol. Kcin quickly squeezed the trigger, and the beam of energy spewed from the barrel, and hit the chameleon in the face just as the chameleon had begun firing. The shot from the chameleon missed Kcin, and flew into the air. The chameleon fell to the ground, while a smoking hole had formed on his forehead. The other three soldiers quickly began to attack. The hedgehog put away his rifle, and instead reached behind him to reveal a sword. The two robots sped to opposite sides of Kcin. The fox aimed a shot at the hedgehog, but his enemy had jumped high into the air, avoiding the bolt. The two robots began firing at Kcin, and he ducked fast, and began to run to avoid the bullets. The hedgehog jumped in front of Kcin, and swung his sword at the fox's chest. Kcin flipped back, and fired behind him, scoring a hit on one of the mechanical soldiers. Kcin jumped into the air, and landed a kick on the hedgehog's head. Kcin attempted to shoot at his enemy while he was on the ground, but the hedgehog quickly rolled out of the way. The hedgehog jumped up, and tried to stab Kcin. The fox stepped to the side, avoiding the blade, but suffered a smack to the head by the robot. While Kcin was on the ground, he looked up, and noticed his mechanical enemy was pointing it's rifle at him. Kcin quickly shot the robot in the head. Kcin got up, and stared at the hedgehog. The hedgehog got into an offensive stance with the sword, and Kcin put his gun back into the holster. Kcin ducked swiflty as the hedgehog aimed a swing at his head. The fox jumped up, with his fist slamming into the neck of the hedgehog. The soldier fell to the ground, and the sword fell into the sand. The hedgehog tried to rise, but Kcin quickly punched him back to the ground. Kcin looked down at the suffering hedgehog, whose blood had began to appear from his mouth. "No hard feelings", Kcin said. "I'm just not too thrilled about being threatened" Kcin walked to the sword on the ground, and picked it up. He then walked to the hedgehog who was sprawled about in pain on the sand. He thrust the blade into the hedgehog's chest. The blade pierced through his armor, and went through his body. The hedgehog let out a yell in pain, and then began gasping. His head then smacked into the sand, and he no longer moved. Kcin wiped the blood from his mouth. What are these soldiers doing in this area?, he thought to himself. They mentioned emeralds... are they looking for the Chaos Emeralds? Well... it doesn't concern me. That army can take over Mobius if they want. As long as I'm well paid... that's all I care about...

On the bridge of the lead ship, the captain, a wolf with red fur, looked down to the sand below. The captain wore a black uniform, customary among officers in the fleet. He walked towards a device on the wall, and pressed a button. "Omega Squad, report", said the wolf into the communications device. The captain waited a few seconds, but there was no answer. He noticed the life readings on the squad's armor was low, and it seemed likely that they had been killed... but by whom... or what? "Omega Squad, do you copy?", the captain tried again. There was still no answer. "The Grand Admiral won't be too happy about this", he thought out loud. "But his orders were clear: all fleet and field officers are to report to a special briefing. If only I could send some scouts down to investigate" The wolf turned to the navigational crew. "Set a course for the main fleet" "Yes, sir", the head crewman replied, and entered the coordinates. The three battleships changed direction, and began speeding away. Kcin looked up, and noticed them. "They're leaving... good", he muttered. "I'd like to avoid any more confrontations with 'em" * Crimson Town was a rather small area. Mostly a few small houses, surronded by thick green grass. It was also one of the many spots in which people were beginning to form militias and come up with plans to combat the new army. Not far from Crimson Town, the largest ship in the dark fleet began it's course towards the town. On the bridge of this battleship stood the Grand Admiral himself. "Soon... these rebellious groups will learn what happens to those who cross us", the Grand Admiral stated, with a sadistic grin on his face. "Prepare your troops for a ground assault, Captain Hett. I will lead the troops personally. It will not be long before I have all of the Chaos Emeralds in my grasp" "Right away, sir", the bat Captain Hett of the large battleship replied. The battleship began it's descent towards the town. * "We have reports that the fleet has tracked us", stated a cat, one of the leaders of the opposition. "Dang it! How did they know we were here?!", shouted another member. "They must have captured one of our troops, and interrogated them. We have no choice now, we have to fight", said the cat. Another member of the opposition rose and yelled, "No way! Let's just surrender! If we don't, they'll probably kill us all" The cat looked around. Most of these people were frightened. They were all in a tiny building with very little defense. "They'll probably kill us either way... so we can die fighting, or die running" Nobody said a word for some time. "We'll evacuate the citizens from the town, and all those capable of fighting will remain here" There was no argument. They all had to prepare themselves. The troops from the dark army had reached the ground. They all marched into the town. Most of the townsfolk had either fled, or remained in their houses. "General", the Grand Admiral said, pointing to a building. "That is their barracks. We shall begin the attack there" The General, an aged crocodile, nodded and said, "Yes, sir" From within the building, the soldiers of the opposition were spread out in different formations. They all stared at the large door anxiously. For a while, it seemed there was no sound. Suddenly, they all heard the sound of footsteps. They readied their weapons, although some didn't even have weapons, and had to rely on their own skill for survival. There was some sort of ticking sound, and in an instant, the door blew open, blasted to dust by the dark armored soldiers. The soldiers and robots rushed into the building, slaughtering all of the soldiers of the opposition. Things were beginning to look grim for this opposition. They continued to spray fire at the attackers. A few soldiers in dark armor and enemy robots fell, but the army still had them outnumbered and outgunned. A short while after the battle had begun, Grand Admiral Lex slowly entered the doorway. Once he had entered, the hall in which he stood was devoid of living opposition soldiers. The troops on his side noticed him, and stood back and saluted. Lex strode further into the building. "I-It's the Grand Admiral himself!", one of the opposition troops shouted. "We can end this now if we kill him!" Lex smiled sardonically. There were three opposition soldiers in the room he stood in, and they each began firing their weapons at the Grand Admiral. Lex held out his hand, and a strange, green aura sphere surronded him. The lasers shot by the guns seemed to be absorbed by this sphere. The Grand Admiral strode towards the group, and unsheathed a sword. The three opposition troops shot at him desperately, though it seemed hopeless. A quick swing ended the life of one soldier. Lex shot his hand forward, and a wave of dark energy flew at the other two. Lex jumped at one, and impaled him. The other was on the floor, in intense pain. The other soldier was the cat who had lead the opposition. Lex picked up the cat by the collar of his shirt. "Tell me... where is the Chaos Emerald?", Lex said. The cat attempted to break free of the Grand Admiral's grasp, but his opponent was too strong. "I... don't know!", the cat yelled. Lex let the cat go, and returned his sword to it's hilt. He held out his hand, and sharp claws protruded from his fingertips. Lex slashed his claws at the cat's stomach. As his hand cut into the cat's flesh, his claws were covered in dark flames, similar to the dark energy he had displayed earlier. The cat let out a yelp, and fell to his knees. "I will let you live...", Lex stated, "Only so that you can watch as your pitiful town is reduced to ash by my fleet" "No! You can't!", the cat shouted, and rushed to the Grand Admiral. He attempted to grab him, but Lex elbowed him in the face, back down to the ground. He watched for a short while as the cat rolled on the ground, then walked out of the room. He met up with the General. "Have you interrogated the survivors?", he asked. "Yes", the General replied. "But they claim they don't know where the Chaos Emerald is" The Grand Admiral replied, "Indeed... I cannot sense the power of the Emerald here, but I know it must be close by. Order your men to return to the ship" All of the dark troops rallied together, and boarded the giant battleship. Grand Admiral Lex made his way to the bridge. The ship was back in the sky. "From here, we shall bombard the town", Lex told the Captain. Hett hesitated for a moment. "Sir... there are many innocent civilians on the surface. Perhaps it would be best to..." "Do you defy my order, Captain?", interrupted the Admiral. Captain Hett noticed that the Admiral's hand was suddenly resting on the hilt of his sword. For a moment, Hett did not speak. "No, sir", the Captain replied. "Good", the Grand Admiral said, and let his hand return to his side. "Now prepare the bombardment" From the sky, all guns on the ship aimed at the ground. Considering how small the town was, this large ship alone would be capable of decimating all of Crimson Town. The ship began firing. Laser blasts, as well as bombs, slammed into the surface. Soon, the town was set ablaze. Buildings were reduced to rubble, and it appeared anyone below would have no chance of surviving the attack. *** Kcin made his way into Emerald Town. Things seemed to be peaceful now that the battleships had left. Businesses were opening up again, and Kcin walked into a restaurant. He sat down, and simply ordered something to drink. He noticed a television, which was showing some commercial. At first, he paid little attention to it, but then, his eyes widened slightly when he saw that familiar black armor on the screen. "Our world has been overrun with chaos and deceit. That is why, it is the job of the military to restore order and balance. The military is accepting new recruits, those seeking adventure and excitement, and want to make a difference in the world", The advertisement showed a few robots, then panned over to show a legion of troops in dark armor, marching in perfect order. "Or, join the fleet, and put your expertise of ships and planes to good use", the program then showed a few battleships and jets in the sky. Then, the camera zoomed towards one huge battleship, and Kcin noticed an officer on the screen... a certain cat who seemed all too familiar. The commercial obviously was glorifying the dark army, and made that Grand Admiral look like some sort of hero. "Hey, I've heard about them", Kcin overheard a young fox say. "That army is going to save Mobius. Maybe we can help?", the fox's friend, a chameleon, said. "All right!", shouted the fox, "Let's sign up!" Kcin watched as the two left the establishment. He put his hand through the fur on his head, and sighed heavily. He lifted the bottle of the drink he ordered, and let the liquid descend down his throat. Wonder where I can find work now, Kcin thought to himself.

Around fifty battleships surronded the large ship commanded by Lex. Onboard the main ship, the Grand Admiral was about to form a briefing, and all high ranking officers within the army and fleet were required to attend. In the briefing room, the officers sat around a large table, waiting for the meeting to begin. They would discuss what should be done about these recent uprisings, and how they would go about finding the Chaos Emeralds. Grand Admiral Lex strode through the doorway, with Captain Hett close behind. The Captain walked to his seat, and sat down. "Now then, we shall discuss what should be done about this opposition", Lex began. "Their forces are comprised mostly of weak, cowardly individuals. Of course, our army has no problem dealing with them" Many of the officers began nodding their head in agreement. "Nevertheless", Lex continued, "They can be unpredictable. Therefore, it is imperative that we take all necessary measures to strengthen our military. General Tack..." General Tack, the same crocodile General who had assisted Lex earlier, began to speak. "Admiral, our robots are programmed with the highest efficiency, and our training programs turn people into fierce warriors. However, we have begun training a new type of unit: the Commando" The Grand Admiral seemed intrigued. Tack continued, "The Commandos are put through training which is much more rigorous than the drills the other recruits are put through. Their armor and weaponry are far superior to that of a normal soldier. They are intended for more advanced missions" Lex replied, "Very interesting, General. Of course, my fleet is well equipped. As proven by our campaign in Crimson Town, there is nothing the opposition can do to stop us. Now, we shall discuss the problem of the Chaos Emeralds" Lex reached into the pocket of his uniform, and revealed a green gem... one of the Chaos Emeralds. "At the moment, we have only this one. With my magical abilities, I am able to barely sense the power generated by them. I will then take it upon myself to search for most of the Emeralds, and if I sense one in a certain location, we will have a fleet nearby to examine it" "It's settled then", General Tack stated. "We will continue to attack the opposition, and Grand Admiral Lex will continue the search for the Chaos Emeralds" * In Emerald Town, within one of the hidden barracks of the opposition, the leaders began receiving messages about the incident in Crimson Town. A young crocodile by the name of Vert sat behind a computer in one of the barracks used by the opposition. The facility was located in the outskirts of Emerald Town, at the edge of a forest. Vert was shocked to find out what had happened at Crimson Town, as he had allies there supporting the same cause. He shut down the computer, and lowered his head. Suddenly, a hedgehog with lavender fur rushed into the room. Tears were beginning to form in her eyes. "Vert... is it true?! Have they really destroyed Crimson Town?", she asked, her voice shaky. The crocodile replied, "I'm afraid so, Mari. Grand Admiral Lex is a psychopath, and will stop at nothing to get the Chaos Emeralds" Tears had begun to flow freely down the hedgehog's face. "Have you heard anything from Muro?", she asked. The crocodile shook his head slowly. "No, I'm sorry. I know that cat was your friend. He was one of our best leaders..." Mari wiped the tears from her face. "We... still have to keep fighting. No matter what" Vert was about to say something, but was distracted by a flashing red light. He quickly turned the computer back on. "This doesn't look good..." "What?", asked Mari. "Scouts have reported troopers in dark armor in Emerald Town. They may track us here" Mari said, "I'll check it out!" "Wait! Are you su-", Before Vert could finish the sentence, Mari had ran from the room. "She should be able to handle herself", Vert said to himself. "Still... this looks dangerous. I hope she'll be okay" Mari came across two of the opposition soldiers. "You two, come with me", she ordered. "Yes, ma'am", they replied, and the three made their way towards Emerald Town. * Kcin just sat back, clearly relaxed. His ears perked up when he heard a loud sound from outside. He heard it again. The sound oddly struck him as seeming like giant footsteps. "Maybe it's just thunder or something", Kcin muttered to himself. Outside, a large robot was in the area, using it's scanning device to survey the area. This had sent most of the civilians into a panic, and the streets were cleared again. The robot continued scanning the area. Mari and the two troops ran into Emerald Town, and spotted the mechanical monstrosity. "Hmm... it's one of the army's robots", Mari stated. "Let's get ready to attack" The two soldiers looked at each other for a second. Then, they hurried in the opposite direction. "Oh, come on! Don't leave me here to battle it alone!" The red scanner swept through the area. The robot twisted it's head to view Mari. "Scanning... Mari the Hedgehog found", the robot said in a dark, electronic voice. "Initiating combat mode" "All right, you bucket of bolts! I'll destroy you myself!", Mari shouted. Kcin had heard most of the commotion, as it took place near the building he was in. He slowly rose from his seat, and strode towards the door. Outside, he saw a hedgehog with purple fur, and a huge robot. He estimated it's height to be around twenty feet. He recognized it as the F-055 class, a robot in the F class designed for heavy weapons combat. The giant robot held out his hand, and bullets sprayed out of it's fingertips. The hedgehog swiftly jumped, and dodged the bullets. She leapt up, and flipped into a ball, then slammed into the robot. With the machine's heavy armor, it appeared as if the attack had done nothing. The robot swung it's arm, attempting to smash the girl. She attempted another flipping attack, but again the machine was not hurt. Kcin made his way into the street. "You look like you could use some help" The girl looked up to see a fox, with an arrogant smile on his face. The hedgehog was on the ground, after being sent down from a recent attack. "Umm...", she began. She flipped backwards, avoiding a row of bullets coming her way. "Sure!", she said. "Just stand back", Kcin said. "I'll take care of this" He removed his gun from the holster, and aimed at the huge robot. He fired six shots, which seemed to barely penetrate the armor of the machine. No attacks seemed to do much to it. "New hostile located", the robot said. "Good job", the hedgehog said sarcastically. "It's CPU is located on it's head. But, it's head is protected by that armor. If I could just remove it!" "All right, sweetheart. And how do you plan on doing that?", Kcin replied. The hedgehog said back, "I don't know... are you just going to stand there, or are you going to help me?" The two jumped out of the way as a huge metal hand came crashing down. The hedgehog jumped onto the the robot's head, and kept flipping into it, though the robot still did not seem to show any signs of weakening. Kcin jumped up, and similarly flipped into a sphere. However, he could not jump as high as the hedgehog. He slammed his head on the metal, and fell back to the ground. He sat up, and rubbed his head. "Ow. Maybe I should've practiced that more...", he said. "If only I had something that could... wait a minute" Kcin reached into the pocket of his jacket, and pulled out a tool. It was a tool used to work on machinery, which produced a small laser used to cut metal. He kept it with him to work on his plane. The hedgehog landed back on the ground. "I have a plan", Kcin said to the hedgehog, brandishing the tool. "I can use this to remove it's armor. I need a lift up there, though..." "All right, no problem", the girl replied. She walked backwards, then ran at Kcin. She grabbed his shoulders, then jumped up. She tossed Kcin on top of the shoulder of the robot. Kcin activated the laser, and began cutting through the metal. The big machine attempted to swat Kcin away, but was distracted by the hedgehog who kept attacking it from all sides. It was not long before Kcin had removed the armor over the machine's head, and the CPU was clearly visible. Kcin pulled out his pistol, and fired a couple of shots into the robot's brain. A small fire began forming, and Kcin flipped back down to the ground. Kcin leapt forward, as a small explosion occured from a chain reaction due to the lasers. The hedgehog smiled at the fox. "Not bad", she said. Kcin twirled his pistol between his fingers, and returned it to the holster. "Hmph, that was too easy" The hedgehog giggled. Kcin turned around, and began walking the other way. "W-wait!", the hedgehog shouted after Kcin. "What's your name?" Kcin stopped, and turned his head. "If you must know... my name is Kcin", he replied. "I'm Mari", the girl stated. Kcin continued walking. Mari ran up after him. "Heh... can't bare to let a gorgeous guy like me out of your sight?", Kcin asked, arrogantly smiling. Mari squinted and said, "No. It's just... you're a really good fighter. Have you ever considered joining the opposition to fight the dark army?" "No. I'm not throwing my life away by joining your tiny rebellion. Besides, I only take jobs that pay a lot, and considering how small your opposition is, I know you wouldn't be able to pay me what I want", Kcin said back. "You only care about yourself?! Look at what's happening. You're just going to leave?!", Mari yelled. "That's right. I-" "Freeze!" The two looked around, surprised. In an instant, they were surronded by twenty of the soldiers in dark armor. One of the troopers, a rabbit, had a blue stripe to indicate his higher rank. He walked towards the two. "All right, hands up", he said. Kcin and Mari slowly rose their hands. "Guess I'll stick around a little longer", Kcin whispered to Mari. The rabbit came closer. "So... you must be the hedgehog, Mari. My superiors will be glad when I tell them where your base is hidden, after you tell me where it is" Mari said, "I won't tell you anything" The rabbit laughed and said, "We'll see" He motioned for a few soldiers to come to his location. "Take these two to the ship" "Yes, sir", one of the soldiers said. The soldiers surronded Mari and Kcin, and escorted them towards a battleship on the ground.
