Chapter 7: Cold Chain

"I be hear'n ya, little lass. I'm just not see'n yer second point as a valid one." Hex spoke, leaning against his desk which had different chemicals in bottles and dark black skulls of many kind decorating it. Cross was leaning against the wall to Hex's right. Another person was with them. A tall, slender Caucasian human with brown hair that reached a couple of inches above her shoulders was closer to Faith than Hex. She looked past a stream of hair that went over her right eye, thinking of the captain's words as she shifted her sights to Faith who moved to adjust his hat.

"I'm on board with Lord Fate being part of the Royals, but there are others that we need to be aware of. Ludi, for example, excluding his mysterious and shrouding vibe, has given me more than enough reason to pin him as one of them." After hearing him speak she tugged on the collar part of her black, opened trench coat that covered most of her red shirt. Clearing her throat she began her own speech.

"Captain, my team is never wrong with the information we provide. We were put together to keep tabs on our own Guardians, to monitor their movements and-"

"Ye be barking up the wrong tree, lads. Ludi be on me very own watchful tab. Found something I did, before yer little team could. Ye carry such pride about yer crew, as well as I. Therefore, me sight is set on what I know I can trust. And little lass, I be knowing for a fact that yer crew don't swim with thee sharks, they'r them." Blaire could sense Hex's tension rising. Even though he remained completely calm and his voice never changed to an aggressive one, she could tell by looking in his eyes he was displeased with what she was providing.

"Captain, if you don't trust me or my team, then why bring us before your presence?"

"Bait..." Faith quickly replied for Hex. The captain's smirk confirmed the cowboy's answer. She tilted her head a bit as if slowing piecing together the puzzle.

"That's why you had the artifact brought aboard your ship, to lore them out... Any of the Guardians could have done this task, why choose me and my team?"

"I don't be trusting ya, or yer little crew. This be a give'n to ya. So when I heard through the great vines that Lord Fate shall not be trusted, I figured the touch of his corruption stretched within the Guardians soul. Evil never embarks in the sunlight. It starts in the darkness, within the chest buried with secrets."

"In short, he believes the first traitors started in your Special Force unit. His proof is me and Ludi, who both started out in that branch before we were moved." Faith explains. This only aggravated Blaire even more as she fixed her tense eyes on the snowflake design sewed into her glove. She sighs as she realized something, confirming more that Hex might actually be right.

"Trickster was transferred to my unit without my consent. Lord Fate overruled my plead against the action. Even though she wasn't there for a long time I assume she obtained enough information to cause that crisis back at the HQ." She paused for a moment, then lifted her head as determination flooded her eyes.

"Regardless, I'm not going to stand here and allow you to call my entire unit traitors. I refuse to believe that all of them are part of the Royals. I admit, they have infiltrated my unit without me being fully aware of their presence, but that does not mean my entire unit is corrupt." Hex remained silent as he stared into her eyes. The room was silent as the tension seemed to thicken the air. Finally Hex spoke as he leaned forward a bit.

"As the lad was say'n, yer here as bait, little lass. I had ye bring that thing aboard me ship, knowing yer crew would feed our enemy the information and present themselves. I wanted ya to be here when they showed up... Atlas, I concluded with my same rejection as before. I swat me hand at your words, and violently disagree with yer second point. The artifact remains unguarded. Keep yer little pawns away from me treasure, little lass." His final words were clearly a threat. They slithered out with a haunting and deathly tone that Blaire couldn't help but feel a chill run down her back. She fought with her body to not react to the sensation, thinking it was her anger rising which was empowering her ice abilities.

"You don't think they're after what she brought aboard." Faith interjected, killing the tension a bit as he continued to speak.

"You think they're after someone, rather than something... I'm guessing Yami."

"Play yer guessing game all ye want, boy. If ye haven't figured it out, then ye should of paid more attention instead of balancing yer hide on a swaying plank-"

"Red..." Blaire suddenly spoke up as if the puzzle was finally complete. She blinked a few times in shock as Hex couldn't help but smirk to confirm her thought.

"They're coming for Red."

"Little lass, they be here already. They've been on me ship for a long while now."

"So what are they waiting for?" She asked the captain. He only spread his smirk a bit more as he leaned back to get comfortable again. Faith adjusted his hat again, getting ready to speak seeing as the captain wasn't going to answer her.

"Orders, it would seem... Either that, or for someone to-" Sudden a loud explosion shakes the entire ship. The trio were tossed to one side of the room, hitting the ground as another explosion goes off and shakes the ship once more. Hex quickly jumped to his feet and widen his smile with excitement.

"Hahahahaha!! It be about that time, lads! Get yer war paint on! Strap up yer boots and buckle yer holsters! We got a raiding party to vanquish! Hahahaha!!"

-------------------

Ludi could hear the fighting going on above him. He raced down the long corridor of the ship, feeling small quakes from the escalating battle. He was hoping the Dark Heart wasn't ripping them to shreds, making him feel like each step he took was killing time, killing one of them.

"You'd think he'd have signs pointing to the damn thing." He told himself as he slid to a halt and kicked opened a door. The door flew off its hinges and spiraled into a storage room of some sort. Sighing with annoyance he goes to sprint down the hall when a large boom shook the ship and caused him to fall into room. A second large boom tossed the items and equipment within the room around. Most of it toppled onto ludi. However, he managed to form a magical barrier to shield himself from the falling objects. He used the barrier to toss the items aside as he got to his feet. He quickly dusted himself off and motioned to climb over the falling items to reach the door, but something caught his attention. A green and yellow light flickered behind him. He turned around and looked at the wall behind him, wondering where the light came from.

He finally spotted the crack in the wall as the bright light shined through again. He tilted his head in confusion, wondering if what he was looking for was hiding behind the wall. After a moment or two he quickly conjured an ancient looking long blade withing his hand, something he didn't like doing while being a SB Guarding. It was a matter of keeping his cover, so displaying all of his powers would give him away should he need to fight any of them while resuming the role of a Royal. He hacked at the wall, only taking two swings before it came crumbing down. The light was brighter now, and a large metal globe orbited around the ball of green and yellow light. He was in awe at the size of it, thinking that this thing was in fact not the scroll he was looking for.

"Looks valuable. Hopefully its explosive. If I can't find that scroll," He started to walk towards the two objects, taking steady strides as he felt that this was a bit too easy. Also, the room was oddly pitch black regardless of the light shining forth.

"Then at least I can bring down this ship. Once we're grounded Cross should be able to-" Suddenly the metal sphere stopped and fixed its self in front of Ludi. It dropped to the floor with a loud metallic thud, lightly shaking the room. Metal spikes quickly burst from the orb, causing Ludi to take a step back as he got ready to fight.

"Death to all who enter to presence of the Wind Razor's Heart-"

"Yeah, I don't got time for this." Performing a few hand motions within a few seconds, he formed a large ball of dark energy, gathering it from the room itself. The ball grew and became more chaotic, forming spikes, red and purple lighting surges, dark green waves and a dark blue aura. He took several steps back as the ball continued to grow, rapidly at that. He was thrown into a panic as he couldn't stop the growth of his attack, when suddenly it erupts like a volcano blast. The explosion launched Ludi out of both rooms and into the corridor walls. As he dropped to the floor the inner room explodes again, causing the entire ship to jerk. Within seconds more explosions go off, which stirred the mysterious being to toss his hood back over his head and pick himself off the floor. He used the air around him to push a massive amount of wind force towards the ground, rocketing himself up and through the floors above him. He burst out of the final floor, reaching the top deck within seconds. He started to slowly descend as he watched the Dark Heart 'play' with the SB Guardians.

Suddenly several ice shards breeze pass him as he turned around to face his attacker. Blaire was already in the air, leaping towards him with fury burning in her eyes. Ludi could only smirk within the darkness that shrouded his face. He quickly formed two single-handle axes, looking as if they were made from large beastly animals as the blades were razor sharp teeth. He motioned to swing at her when she was violently launched towards the deck with a powerful kick to her ribs. She shouted in pain as she hit the wooden floor hard and bounced once before dropping onto her hands and knees. Ludi was completely shocked, seeing the Dark Heart appear so fast and use such force to deliver a blow like that with ease.

"Impossible." Ludi thought.

"No one has ever surprised Blaire with any attack. She could always sense when someone is approaching her, no matter how fast they move... She didn't even feel him, she wasn't even aware he was that close to her." Ludi jerked back as his train of thought broke when the Dark Heart turned its attention towards him. His eyes slightly widen as he stared into the being's eyes, wishing he had never seen its eyes, feeling as if they'll haunt him forever. The evilness seeping through them as it simply stared, peering into the darkness and uncovering what he truly looks like, sinking his eyes into his very soul. It was at that moment that his heart raced with pure panic. Even though it was for a second, Ludi saw it. The subtle yet striking tell of an attack, like a predator ready to kill its prey. Ludi threw up his axes in an X formation as quickly as he could. He felt the power the being used as his foot impacted his weapons. The sheer force shattered them completely and sent Ludi spiraling towards the deck below.

"Gotcha!" Rabid shouts, catching him in midair. Oddly enough they were still falling yet Ludi somehow knew he was safe.

"Please tell me that it didn't just attack me." Ludi comments, realizing that the ship wasn't getting closer to them, but pulling away.

"And why the heck are we still falling?"

"The ship is free falling, along with us. Its picking up speed the closer it gets to the ground... And yes, it did just attack you, as far as my eyes saw." Ludi thought for a moment, trying to think which case was worse, being attack by Fate's Dark Heart or realizing that if the ship crash lands no one on board will likely survive.

"We're not going to let them all die like that, right?"

"No... Smart thinking, by the way. Making the ship crash land so the Dark Heart wont kill them all." Rabid comments, to which Ludi remembered that he didn't see the being move after he was attacked. He looked back to where it should be according to their descent. Sure enough it was still there, fixing its attention on both of them as if it wanted to rip they apart. Finally it leaned forward and burst in flight towards the falling ship. Ludi and Rabid soon did the same, chasing after the Dark Heart as it rapidly neared the ship.

"Captain Hex!! Stop your joy-falling and regain control of your ship!" Blaire shouts, clinging onto the railing leading up to the helm.

"Whats his deal!! Tell him to stop his creepy laughing and do something!" Red shouts as he too was hanging on for his life.

"Stop complaining! This is the most fun we've had in years!" Combo comments, laughing along with the captain as he hung onto a rope that was tied down. Suddenly the Dark Heart touchdown on the ship again, ignoring the harsh wind force that was swirling and whipping about. Everyone fixed their eyes on it, knowing they were all in no condition to fight this being. They all were startled as it fixed its eyes on Red, and soon began walking towards him. Pure fear swept over the blonde haired human as he watched 'death' slowly approach him. Otogi was clinging onto Pianta, who managed to form a protective barrier around the two of them, and was struggling to keep it up. Her eyes watched in horror as the Dark Heart stopped right in front of Red. She wanted to shout, she wanted to do something, but she knew she couldn't leave the barrier, other wise they both would be swept away. Two black blurs rush pass the ship and managed to set themselves under it. Rabid's front was facing the ground that was coming nearer by the second. His back was pressed against Ludi's back, with his front facing the falling ship.

"Alright! My gun took in the enchantment!" Rabid shouts. Ludi simply nods and begins to perform an array of arm and hand motions. Soon, a large dark green orb begins to form in front of him. The orb continued to grow as thunder clouds begin to form within the orb. A raging storm starts to roar within the orb as it begins to expand. Its size starts to past the ship as Ludi continued to focus.

"I need more time!" Ludi shouts, to which Rabid nods his head and aimed his gun at the earth below. A large boom roared from his gun as a massive blue beam shoots out. The force of the beam hits the ground and spreads out like liquid pouring onto the ground. The power of the beam slows their fall as the orb presses against the ship. Rabid and Ludi both struggle to slow down the speed of ship, but their efforts seem to only delay their fate.

"We're still moving too fast! Hurry up and summon the damn thing!"

"Don't rush me! I'd like to see you summon a grand dra-"

"Ludi! Shut up and summon it already!"

"Fine! Raaaah!!!" Ludi's eyes suddenly changed to a red glowing color as his body began to glow. He clapped his hands once as the orb started to shake and crack. Within seconds the cracks started to form chunks that were about to be chipped away.

"Done!" With that said Ludi grabbed Rabid and spun him around, causing the beam shooting from his gun to impale the orb. It course right through and burned through the ship, scaring everyone aboard as the beam rained down like water being sprayed. The two of them vanished from sight as the massive orb explodes and nearly shatters the ship in half. The ship instantly jerked to a stop, and oddly enough they weren't in pieces. Everyone felt dazed and tried to stir themselves to their feet. They were confused and lost as they slowly regained their mental state. A large dust cloud covered the ship from the sudden halt, giving their confusion more fuel. It started to slowly fade as the sunlight broke through. They could hear something breathing loudly underneath them.

"Red!!" Otogi shouts once she was able to fully stand on her feet. She ran through the fading mist of dust to where Red should be. She found nothing, causing her eyes to fill with tears. Suddenly a loud sound blast tore a huge whole in the ship as pieces of wood and rope fly everywhere. The group covered their ears as the loud guitar strum settled into nothingness. A male with untidy long hair leaped up from the large hole in the ship and quickly got into his fighting stance. His red t-shirt waved a bit as the breeze from his powerful guitar of a weapon settled. The sound wave cleared out the dust, allowing everyone to see that they've landed in the outskirts of a forest.

"Ajkunai?" Pianta questioned, wondering where he came from. Blaire suddenly spun around and caught a punch from Hex, who somehow managed to get near her within a few seconds. She glared into his eyes as she balled up her other hand into a fist.

"Lying little lass." Hex uttered, knowing she ordered Ajkunai to sneak into the storage unit the artifact was held in.

"Great job, Ajkunai. You've done a-"

"He got away with it." He quickly spoke, dropping his guard down as he swung his guitar to his back. Blaire released Hex's fist and quickly walked towards the warrior-musician.

"He took it?" She asked to confirm what she heard was correct. He lowered his head, feeling defeated as he slowly nods his head.

"And I think he killed Rabid and Ludi too." He adds, to which he pulled out Ludi's hat from the back of his pocket and gave it to Blaire. Her eyes widen with terror as she slowly reached out to grab it. Once it was in her grasp she could feel her eyes filling with water, her vision becoming blurry, and he heart slowly down. Pianta screamed in horror and shoved Blaire out of her way as she snatched the hat from her. She held it tightly as she dropped to her knees and allowed the fury within produce hateful tears.

"Quit yer sobbing, gal. yer real father isn't dead..." Hex comments, fixing his eyes towards the edge of the ship. Rabid was leaning against the railing with his arms cross and eyes closed, feeling odd and slightly exposed that he didn't have his jacket on. Ludi on the other hand was sitting on the railing of the ship, using Rabid's jacket as an odd hat-like-hood to cover his entire head.

"Yes, we're both alive. Who do you think summoned the sleeping dragon to break our fall?" Ludi comments with a slight shrug of his shoulders. Everyone blinked a few times, as if they didn't understand what he was saying. A few of them raced to the edge of the ship and realized he was right. Underneath them was a large dark green sleeping dragon. One would consider this dragon an oversize, or overweight, dragon that is completely harmless, or completely lazy. Either way, this mass of dragon flesh and meat broke their fall, and prevented the ship from colliding with the earth. Of course, this dragon was the size of a small mountain, meaning they'd have to climb down the beast to actually reach the forest.

"Yer all still aboard me ship, and you've overstayed yer welcome. Now kindly remove your carcasses from this vessel... Oh, and by all means, lads, let the plank hit yer ass on yer way down." Hex informs them, turning around to head back into his chambers.

"You refuse to help us? Now that you're bait failed you're just going to give up?" Blaire asked with anger in her voice, thinking the captain was of no help from the start.

"No, little lass." He starts off, turning around to face her once more.

"The plan was solid. I've gathered what information I need for me own workings. They took the bait, both'em. The boy, and the other one-"

"You disgust me, captain." She cut him off, pausing as she felt her anger rising again.

"You-"

"Beware of what comes from ye mouth, little lass. I don't take kindly to insults 'n lies, nor do I be in the mood for games of spy and trickery. Setting this trap of mine showed me whom I can put me trust in. This crew of yers, these Guardians as ye call yer selves, are all a bunch of dogs looking for their next bone to be picking. Ye have traitors standing so close to ya, that ye wouldn't even know it even if they sold ya their souls. Ye mind lacks much knowledge of what be happening here. Fathom all ye like, yer'll never understand how grave this plot be. Atlas, leave me and me vessel. Take as much from this ship as ye want, but it still won't save yer lives... Yer graves are already laid, I've seen them." With that bone chilling line there was a short pause before Hex turned around again and headed into his quarters. Blaire had no words to say. She could only tighten her fists as she watched him leave.

"Ajkunai... Get everyone to gather whatever they can. We're heading out in ten minuets."

"What about Red, and Lord Fate?"

"Fate isn't on our side, Otogi. He never was... As for Red, we'll get him back. I promise."

"The captain would like to see you, Ludi and Rabid." Ezekial suddenly spoke out as he walked out of the captain's chambers. They looked at each other for a moment, then proceeded to join Hex in his quarters after Ludi shrugged in confusion. Passing Pianta he nods to her as she gave him his hat back while providing him with a strong embrace.

"Yami..." Blaire called, to which he was pushed towards her by Combo. After stumbling a bit he adjusted him with a bit of attitude, not liking that he was still seen as a traitor for being with Trickster.

"Where is Virus and the rest of the Royals?" Yami narrowed his eyes with anger, stepping forward and getting in Blaire's face.

"I can see why she would betray us, and I agree with every Hex said. You guys are so confused, so lost that you don't even know who to trust, who is on your side, or what is really happening here-"

"I'm not going to ask again-"

"Save it, Blaire!" He shouts, his anger growing more and more as she narrowed her eyes at his out burst.

"If you want answers then talk to the one person who isn't here... Did you all forget to count? You're missing one person." Blaire squinted her eyes as Yami turned around and began to walk away. He didn't get far as Combo was blocking his path, arms crossed and smirking as if challenging him to a fight. She sighs deeply while closing her eyes. She did the math in her head before Yami even mentioned it.

"Cross... Where the hell did you go..."
