 If you're afraid your friendship is going to end up messy and just want to be sure; just subtly ask her questions like what she'd think about what if you two started dating - or joke about it and watch her reaction. If you get hints that she wouldn't mind, ask her out. Though, like Finite said, I don't think your friendship will suffer from it. But it doesn't hurt to try. :P
