If you don't have enough money to buy a completely new system, I'm guessing you could afford a fresh copy of Windows 7. Meaning buying the disk and booting your system from the CD.

Or, you can spend less on buying a new graphics card. Your OS doesn't really affect your computers performance, if you can't get 7 then XP is better than nothing or Vista.

As for the virus issue, what anti-virus do you use? I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials as well as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. You could use the latter to scan the computer for any traces left by the skype virus. MSE downloads virus and spyware definitions that it uses to identify threats.
