First off, it's time to dispel some tech myths. Viruses do not normally take up space exponentially. In fact viral code in itself can be as small as a handful of kilobytes. Also the only "memory" that comes into play with a hard drive is virtual memory, a special Windows multitasking scheme that takes data that isn't being frequently accessed in a current RAM session and putting it to a large disk file, swapping it out of there whenever necessary. My guess is that there's a bunch of system caches and the like that haven't been cleaned out. Try a free application like Piriform's CCleaner and see if that cleans some things up. If you want me to take a look at your system configuration, download the free TeamViewer remote access application and send me a PM with the system ID and password for your system that it generates.
