PlayStation Vita is failing in Japan
Fwiss

Thanks for clearing the sales thing up, Metallix! I do think that the PSV has almost no launch games, though. I mean, come on! I would like to get the PSV, but there aren't any good games coming out soon. Maybe if they have a Patapon for it... I mean, the 3DS has Mario Kart 7, Cave Story 3D, it HAD MML3, but what games does the Vita have? Exactly. Its sales will go up anyway once some games come out for it.
It's getting tiring hearing all about how things are failing with no logic behind it. When the 3DS came out, all I heard was how dedicated handhelds were dead and smart phones/tablets are the future... Now that the 3DS has hit a stride they have to turn their attention to something else and it's all just sensationalism to get people to read their articles.

As far as the games go, they had some good ones that the Japanese like. Hot Shots Golf is fairly popular over there. As for when it launches elsewhere, I'd say it has a better launch lineup of any handheld or console in recent history. Uncharted is likely to be the big hyped title but you have great gems that can't be missed like Little Deviants, Escape Plan, WipEout 2048, LittleBigPlanet, Modnation Racers Road Trip, Reality Fighter, etc. I really hope they come out with a Vita Invisimals so I can finally try out that game.

Just check out this Golden Abyss review... Seems to be the Vita's heavy hitter but it's Uncharted soooo it's not surprising!

I got this game for Christmas as well and I just completed the story mode last night, which was pretty damn epic I might add. So much frustrating, thought-provoking, precise platforming; so good. Excellent game, the best platformer I've played this year hands down.

With just the few maneuvers and the fact that every piece of the environment can be interacted with properly, the developers have given you an obscene amount of control over Rayman both in how he can navigate his environment as well as save himself from potential gaffes. They even managed to get a swimming mechanic in there that isn't confusing, a pace-bogger, or freaking annoying. Combine this with level design that begins to get more demanding of the player's handling of Rayman overtime in a reasonable manner, culminating in an amazing final level, and you have something marvelous. T'is a shame Ubisoft essentially sent this game to die; it needs more sales. 8(

I also dabbled in multiplayer two days ago with a friend for about five hours, and the entire time I was wondering why this was much better to play than NSMBWii, why I didn't feel the need at any time to punch her in her damned mouth and vice versa. Aside from the fact that you can punch players in-game(!), the complete lack of player collision detection beyond that was a god-send. If RO had been another ping-pong ball affair with its level of floatiness, I wouldn't have been happy playing this with anyone.

Also, little competition. There's no power-ups thus nothing to gouge each others' eyes over; the collection of Lums only amounts to who's placed where on the stage over screen, but the more important thing is how many you've both collected together, and this vastly increases cooperation between your partners much sooner; you'll be actively deciding which of the players should go for which Lums and coins, and telling each other to wait for a second as you go for something they may have missed. It's great.

Everyone who gives even the tiniest bit of a damn about good platformers- nay, good games in general- is obligated to buy this one.
I'm very glad to hear that! I think I will buy it when I can find it on sell. I really want to believe that platformers are coming back but even if not, it's good to know there's still a good selection out there. I just rebought Ratchet & Clank and going to get All 4 One and LittleBigPlanet 2 eventually. Plus I already got Sonic Generations. It almost seemed like the genre was on its last legs.

PlayStation Vita is failing in Japan
I wouldn't see why not. Considering ports from PS3 to Vita are simple, anything that comes to PS3 probably would go to the Vita with extras of course. Or perhaps, like Motorstorm RC and a few other games, you buy one copy and you get both so you can continue to play it while you're away from your system.

Sonic 4: Episode II

You know what I would've rather had? Sonic 4 as a single release, like Megaman 9, or New Super Mario Bros. Wii, or Donkey Kong Country Returns, or Rayman Origins. There is no real creative decision apparent to have this game as an episodic release in the first place.

Also, episode 1 has five levels, which is below average most Sonic platformers. Its direct prequel has eight. Locked on, its direct prequel has fourteen.
Well what exactly is the difference between calling it 4 Part II than just making every game a new number like Megaman or Mario 75? It's not like they had the next part made and just decided to cut it in half. Unlike Sonic 3 where it was pretty much already finished(Sonic & Knuckles) and didn't want to wait, Episode II wasn't started until after Episode I came out. Yeah Sonic 3 had more levels but you can't really count S&K locked on unless you want to combine S4 I & II.

Ah that's a very nice skin, I like the color palette. I just don't use it very often, but every time I do it always reminds me of how nice it looks.

For the record, Sonic 3 was hacked up into two parts due to time restraints. Even if we weren't certain if it was that or storage problems, both scenarios are far different than deliberately hacking up an easily-doable game in this day and age into episodes in order to milk the nostalgia for all it's worth and then some. Remember, if we're to assume the game will be four parts at Episode 1's original $15 price tag, this game will cost more than effing Sonic Generations. =/
Yeah but what's better: them making Sonic 4 into multiple games or calling it Sonic 5? I'd rather they go with Sonic 4 Part II rather than Sonic 5. It's not like Sonic 4 was any shorter than the original games anyway. They are fairly on average to what a normal Sonic game would be.

I am very meh about Ep.2, partially because of how disappointing Ep.1 was and partially because of how awesome SG turned out to be. Plus episodic content is...
You could consider Sonic & Knuckles episodic content for Sonic 3.... Anyway I would not care in the slightest for this except for the fact it's reported to have completely different physics from Episode I. Now I'm interested!
Perhaps you have a point there, although my understanding of the whole S3/S&K is that Sega simply ran out of time and that's why they split the titles. I'm not 100% sure whether that's got much truth to it as if it is, the bolt-on cart tech was a hell of a too-good-to-be-missed opportunity that was taken up.
Plus if you look at the turnaround time between the two titles, it amazes me that there's been such a huge gap between I and II. Sega isn't Valve after all.
I've heard they ran out of time and also heard that it was simply too big of a game to put onto one cartridge, which is why they had the lock-on thingy... Idk what the truth is.

Anyway just the fact that it has different physics takes away my "meh" feeling about this game. Now once we have gameplay of it, we'll see if that continues.

PlayStation Vita is failing in Japan
I've been reading about this and I say, how is it failing? It did 400k in 9 days with limited supply(compared to 466k the 3DS did the WHOLE month of November)... They only shipped 500k throughout the whole country of Japan. With only 100k left it's probably spread out very thin and is reported that the wifi version is completely sold out, only leaving the less popular 3G model that the Japanese don't care for. What is with the media and being so quick to jump on the Vita? They've painted a negative picture on it for no reason when it isn't even true. 70k+ is more than all individual systems do in Japan on a normal weekly basis anyway and there's no word on when more will be shipped.

On the topic of games, I think the Vita's launch games are more geared towards the west anyway, especially in February when there will be more launch titles. It's only a matter of time before some mega Japanese game comes out for the Vita and you know there will be a Monster Hunter for it. But it has also been reported that "One thing that did sell out was Vita memory cards. The bigger ones, the 16 and 32GB cards, are completely sold out, according to reports. Despite the high pricing, 90 percent of Vita purchasers also bought a memory card. " . This explains why Vita games weren't in the top 10. Does the media really expect Japanese gamers to buy huge memory cards and not use them to buy cheaper priced digital copies of games?

As for the 3DS's massive numbers this week... Have you seen the games that have come out for it recently? They've put out all of their big guns for the end of the year. Mario Kart, Monster Hunter, etc. All big games in Japan! You know what happens in Japan when a big game comes out for a system? The system surges to astronomical numbers and then usually goes back down to normal. It has happened with the PS3/PSP several times with games such as Yakuza 3/4, Resident Evil 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Monster Hunter 3G, etc. I think this just proves that despite all of these gimmicks Nintendo and Sony have used, it's ALL about the games. The reason the 3DS didn't come out swinging was because it simply lacked the software that the Japanese people wanted and now a bunch have just come out.

I see no reason for these doom and gloom articles. :???: I felt the same way when everyone was saying the 3DS failed because it wasn't doing astronomical numbers. Both the PSP and DS did better in the long run than what their launches would have suggested and the PSP was the #1 system in Japan for 2010.

Updated it with the final final box art. Barring the "limited edition" and advertisement for free download of TMB, they changed the hair a bit on the side and added a helicopter. Not much has changed but still looks great!

@MoD: I'm not trying to troll, nor am I bad at Sonic games. If you would have taken the time to finish reading you'd have understood that I was comparing the multiple path setup to the Genesis games, and how on those you could easily go back and forth where as on this game, once you're on one, you're practically forced through it as the game takes control of you far too often.

@kimmiechao: Yeah that is another thing, the story is just.... why? It's like a story for a children's television show or something. They're all on a picnic..... but then randomly boom they are thrown into a nothingness with gates to old levels, because time got all goofy. And Sonic Adventure style modern would be a VAST improvement. It had it's bugs and things too, but you had more control, you could take more time to soak things up, and it was overall funner. This newer fast paced way of doing things, sure it matches that Sonic is really fast, but it takes away the magic and fun SA and SA2 had, making the levels feel rushed and boring now.

@Sonic 2: Please enlighten me on how Sonic Adventure 2 had the same problems I've named above? If SA2 was similar in setup and game play to Generations, I'd love Generations, and wouldn't have much to gripe about. Annnndddd Sonic is dead, the Sonic I grew up with, the glory of the golden days, it's dead, and despite these empty promises they keep making telling me the new games are going to revisit them, they never do, they can't get it right, and therefore, extreme disappointment.

@Max: I don't want it to resemble the modern era at all. The modern era has been disappointment after disappointment. I wanted what I was promised during the planning stages of Sonic Generations, a game that harkens back to the Genesis days. A game that plays a lot more like Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles, Has the nicer graphics sure, revamping the levels and layouts, but not losing the magic it once had. Sonic Generations was not the masterpiece it was promised to be. And I didn't buy it. My first sentence I believe stated that my brother got it, and I played it. I wouldn't shell out a dime for it.

Not a single person here seems to grasp why I'm so worked up. And why it only took 2 levels for me to rate this game to be so low. It was promoted to be harkening back to the golden days of Sonic, a game that the classic 90's gamer would appreciate. It was supposed to bring back the old magical feel of the Genesis games, revamping the stages to look more modern, but to play a lot more similarly to the classic era. I was let down, because this game didn't meet the promise. It doesn't play or feel like anything close to a Genesis game when playing Classic Sonic. The level looks pretty, but that's all it really had going for it, it didn't much feel like playing Green Hill. It felt like I was playing..... frankly I don't know anymore. As for Modern Sonic and Green Hill, I honestly think SA2 captured the Green Hill Zone feel a million times better in a 3d format. It actually felt like I was playing the classic level in a modern way. Why can't they just do that again? Why do they feel they have to keep things in this similar fashion they've been keeping it in recent years?

SA2 Green Hill got it better? But that had automation, no multiple paths, and no back tracking either... The same faults you are complaining about in Generations! I'm just going to respectfully disagree instead of flame like a jackass would do. I could agree with you on Shadow, Sonic '06, Sonic 4, and to a lesser extent Heroes being bad, but I don't see a whole lot wrong with this game as far as gameplay.

Dead? Maybe to you, don't speak for everyone because fans of both spectrums seem to like the game as well as the critics.

I never quite understood why everyone likes Shadow Blade so much...
All the colors just mesh so nicely together. Almost every other skin is blinding or just unappealing for some reason.
When you get used to a certain skin, others will generally look weird to you. Obviously if you're used to a completely black skin with subtle dark red highlights, you're going to cringe at a bright white skin or any skin that isn't dark to be honest. Goes the other way around too if you're used to a white skin. Preferences preferences.

I like Shadow Blade, but I prefer colorful skins.

Really? I appreciate anyone who has enough brains to create an idea that was never considered before but...a sub-forum to document all of the roleplays?

Really?
Now now, it's not a bad idea! I think it would work but I don't see too much point when, as said, people usually state what they want in the first post anyway.

Hanukkah is another big one. I'm kinda curious, do we have any Jewish people at SB?

Merry Christmas!
Well Christmas Day is upon most of the world right now so I figured I would create a thread wishing everybody a Merry Christmas! And on that note, a brief story of Christmas! Hope you all have a great day! :)

Quote:

Visitation from the Angel Gabriel
In the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God to a Galilean town, Nazareth by name, to a young woman named Mary who was engaged to a man called Joseph (a descendant of King David). The angel entered her room and said, "Greeting to you, Mary. O favored one! - the Lord be with you!"

Mary was deeply perturbed at these words and wondered what such a greeting could possibly mean. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid Mary; God loves you dearly. You are going to be the mother of a son, and you will call him Jesus. He will be great and will be known as the Son of the most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his forefather David, and he will be king over the people of Jacob for ever. His reign shall never end."

Then Mary spoke to the angel, "How can this be?" she said, "I am not married!" But the angel said to her "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the most high will overshadow you. Your child will therefore be called holy, the Son of God."

"I belong to the Lord, body and soul," replied Mary. "Let it happen to me as you say." And at this, the angel left her. Afterwards, Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was also pregnant. She stayed with her three months and then went back to her own home.

The Marriage of Mary and Joseph
Upon her return, just before their marriage, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. It was by the Holy Spirit, but he did not know that. Joseph did not believe her story about the visit of the angel Gabriel and thought she had given herself to another man while she was visiting her cousin.

Now Joseph, her future husband, was a good man and did not want to see her disgraced (by embarrassing her publicly and refusing the marriage.) So, he planned to break off the engagement quietly. But while he was turning the matter over in his mind, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not hesitate to take Mary as your wife. God’s Holy Spirit has made her pregnant and she will give birth to a son, whom you will call Jesus (the Saviour) for it is he Who will save his people from their sins". All this happened to fulfill what the Lord said through the prophet Isaiah (7:14):

"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son and they shall call his name Immanuel."

When Joseph woke up he did what the angel told him. He married Mary, but did not have relations with her as a husband until after she gave birth to her son.

At that time a proclamation was made by Caesar Augustus that all the inhabited world should be registered. This was the first census while Cyrenius was governor of Syria; and everybody went to the town of his birth to be registered. Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to David’s town, Bethlehem, in Judea, because he was a direct descendant of David, to be registered with his wife Mary, now in the later stages of her pregnancy.

The Annunciation of His Birth by Angels
So it happened that while they were there in Bethlehem the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to her first child, a son. And, as there was no place for them inside the inn, she wrapped him up in a blanket and laid him in a manger (a feeding trough for animals). Then Joseph gave him the name Jesus, just like the Angel of the Lord told him to do.

And there were some shepherds living in the same part of the country, keeping guard throughout the night over their flock in the open fields. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord stood by their side, and the splendour of the Lord blazed around them and they were terror-stricken.

But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid! Listen, I am here to announce a great and joyful event which is for all the people around the world. This very day, in David’s town (Bethlehem), a Saviour has been born for you. He is Christ, the Messiah and Lord. Let this prove it to you; you will find a baby, wrapped up and lying in a manger. And, in a flash, there appeared with the angel a vast host of the armies of Heaven, praising God, saying "Glory to God in the Highest Heaven! Peace upon earth among men of goodwill!"

When the angels left them and went back into Heaven, the shepherds said to each other, " now let us go straight to Bethlehem and see this thing which the Lord has made known to us." So they came running and they found Mary and Joseph and the baby laying in the manger. And when they had seen this sight, they told everybody what the angels said to them about this little child. And those who heard them were amazed and impressed by their words.

The shepherds went back to their work, glorifying and praising God for everything that they had heard and seen, which happened just as they had been told. But Mary treasured all of these things and thought about them constantly in her heart.

The Arrival of the Magi or, The Three Wise Men
Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days when Herod was king of the province. Not long after His birth there arrived from the east a party of wise men (scholars) traveling to Jerusalem and inquiring as they went, "Where is the child born to be King of the Jews? For we observed a star that signaled His birth and we have come here to pay homage (and worship) Him."

When King Herod heard about this he was terrified and deeply perturbed, as indeed were many of the other people living in Jerusalem. So, he summoned all the Jewish scribes (religion scholars) and chief priests together and asked them where Christ the Messiah should be born. Their reply was: "In Bethlehem, Judea territory, for this is what the prophet Micah (5:2) wrote:

"And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah
art in no wise least among the princes of Judah;
for out of thee shall come forth a Governor,
Who shall be shepherd (and ruler) of my people Israel."

Then Herod, sly fox that he was, pretended to be as spiritual as the wise men and invited them to meet with him privately. He found out from them the exact time when the star appeared. Then, he sent them off to Bethlehem saying, "when you get there, search for this little child with the utmost care. And, when you have found him, come back and tell me so that I may go and worship him too."

The wise men listened to the instructions of the king and went on their way to Bethlehem. Miraculously, the star, which they had seen in the eastern sky, appeared again. The sight of the star filled them with indescribable joy. They knew they were in the right place! And, they had arrived at the right time! It led them on as they traveled until at last it shone right above the place where the young child lay. They went into the house and saw the little child in the arms of Mary his mother. Overcome, they fell on their knees and worshipped Him. Then, they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts: gold, incense (frankincense) and myrrh.

They were warned by God (in a dream) not to report back to Herod. So, they worked out another route, left without being seen and returned to their own country.

The Flight to Egypt from Bethlehem
After the wise men left, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up now, and take the little child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you. For Herod is hunting for this child, and wants to kill him." So Joseph obeyed.

He got up in the middle of the night, took the child and his mother and set off for Egypt. They were well on the way by day. And, they lived in Egypt until Herod died. This is another Fulfilled of the Lord’s word spoken through the prophet Hosea ( 11:1):

“Out of Egypt did I call my son.”

When Herod saw that he had been fooled by the wise men, he was furious. He issued orders to kill all the male children of two years and under in Bethlehem and the surrounding district - basing his calculation upon his careful questioning of the wise men. Then Jeremiah’s prophecy (31:15) was fulfilled:

"A voice was heard in Ramah,
Weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
And she would not be comforted,
because they are dead and buried."

After Herod’s death an angel of the Lord again appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Now get up and take the infant and his mother with you and go back to the land of Israel. For those who sought the child’s life are dead."

So Joseph got up and took the little child and his mother and re-entered Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as king, he was afraid to go to Judea. Directed in a dream to go to the hills of Galilee, he settled in the village of Nazareth thus, fulfilling another prophecy. (Isaiah 11:1-10)

Boxart Discussion
So I was thinking a lot about box arts and decided to make a thread so we can make discuss our favorite boxarts and post any custom made ones we have made.

One subject on boxarts is that it seems that EU/JP always gets better box arts than in NA. Here are a few examples:

The only one I have seen where I just thought the North American box art was miles ahead of the European one is Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction as seen here:

That's unfortunate for sure, and let this be a lesson, never buy the in-store warranty.. I never do because it's just a huge ripoff.. I've never needed it and even if I ever did, there are so many loopholes that the companies can use to back out of commitment legally.. and even when they don't the way it's set up (like in your case) just makes absolutely no sense.
Well I got it fixed on Wednesday. The repairman came out, didn't bother finding what was wrong, and just replaced pretty much everything. LOL! Still got the warranty from Best Buy. It may be a rip off but I don't exactly trust the 1 year warranty especially since it died so quickly. Hopefully the new parts aren't faulty.
